Yeah various forms of 5x5 are a great way to train, you really concentrate on getting very strong. Old school training was for the most part natural, I have heard there may have been some gear around during Steve Reeve's era, even so by today's standards still what you would call natural. They also didn't have some of the supplements we have today. I like the fact they didn't concentrate on a tonne of different exercises, which are cramming up many a fitness publication today. They seemed to stick to the basics, and worked very hard at them.
