Keep in mind the university culture in Japan means that it is roughly translated to four years of playtime.
Most of the hard work is done in highschool preparing for the university entrance exams.
It is also meant as a place to meet other "good" Japanese mates with the hope that right after Uni they go off and get married.
You are right about the maturity level as at this point in their lives they have lived in a "box" and never been exposed much to the real world (on purpose).
When I am in Japan I focus on an entirely different type of girl. 25- 33 yo professional types that might have spent some time abroad. You should be able to tell by the type of clothing that they wear and the way that they carry themselves.
