This is hilarious. I had a friend who was his righteous hippie counterpart. Whenever we walked somewhere, he wouldn't hope cars would give us the right of the way, he would demand it, boldly striding out in front of cars and daring them not to stop.
Like you I asked him why he did it and he had a spiel about it too, about how we had right of way and we couldn't let them bully us because they were in cars.
And I said to him: Yeah, but what if he just doesn't see you?
