It depends on your shirt. Big/spread/cutaway collars require big knots. Typical point collars should get a smaller knot.
I usually go with a half-windsor.
There's also the 4 in Hand
and the double 4 in hand, which you wrap the tie around twice instead of once.
Anything else (there are like 30+ ways to tie a tie) is just showing off. "ooh look @ my Shelby"
As far as the suiting up movement goes, do it! i've been suited up for 6 years now, and even if you live in a world of suits, doing it right still sets you apart from the slobs who just buy one cause they have to wear it.
Suit does 2 things
There's the external aspect of it, people see you and treat you better.
But there's the internal aspect of it, which builds your confidence when you've got your suit looking right.
