The "don't buy girls stuff" line of thought still holds value in some circles, principally entitled American girls. For them it's this game, a power play. If she successfully extracts gifts and drinks from you, you're just another dumb mark to her. Thus the girls who pride themselves on going to the bars with only their ID. The best game here is probably just identifying and avoiding them, because the likelihood of them being an attention whore is high.
