A big part of European tradition is to remember the dead in better light than they actually were. It happens all the time, if you are white and not total liberal individualist, just remember your grandfather, how you feel about him now and how he actually was.
The tradition got passed on the modern times from pagan times when people believed that humans will reincarnate and by remembering only the positive things they wanted to erase the bad ones.
If you don't have "us vs. them" mentality you are nothing. Without a tribe you are just slowly rotting bag of meat.
