I'd go on the trip and buy a less high speed laptop for now. I guess it depends on what you need it for, but if you can live without gaming on it and you're not doing video editing, you could get a very solid off-lease professional laptop for a lot less than $1000.
I'm a programmer and writer and my laptop is basically my absolute must have, don't go anywhere without it tool, and I'm using a 4 year old Thinkpad T430 with no complaints at all. I bought it used a year ago for about $350. Build quality is outstanding; it blows typical consumer laptops out of the water in that respect.
