It's generally because of social repercussions. Islam isn't like modern Christianity, which I freely broke away from without any problems. It's very viscous. No doubt he fears how his family and friends will respond to him if he does this. Crabs in the bucket with sharp claws. It's probably closer to 'escaping the DDR' versus 'choosing which book to read'. May he be strong and pro-social.
