This is pretty insane. $250,000 fine if an employer refers to a tranny by the wrong gender in NYC.

Is New York trying to drive out businesses or trying to ensure trannies never get hired in the first place?

The fine is definitely in the law under the 2002 Transgender Rights Bill so the article is legit, although I only saw the one source I quoted. Here's the relevant text - it's describing examples of finable violations:
