Speaking enough Spanish to get you by is all you really need, sometimes knowing too much is actually a minus instead of a plus!! Here's what I mean - I am completely Fluent in Spanish and English but I always speak 100% Spanish over there because it just comes natural to me. The Girls over there will respond better to the guy who speaks broken Spanish as opposed to the Fluent one. The reason is because they're already living everyday with Spanish Speaking Men, they want something different.
I've seen this happen not just in the Dominican Republic, but in other Latin American countries. Some girls lose interest once I start talking.
