My great great grandfather changed the family name when he moved to this country to sound more American

I'm doing that now.

Can having a foreign sounding name be an impediment to one's quality of life when residing in America? A bit contradictory when it's an immigrant country??

It was back in the 20's or so, times were different I suppose. Our original family name wasn't even that out there, especially as far as Scandinavian names go. My mom changed her last name back to the real family last name a few years ago, I've considered doing the same.
