Im hammering out my spanish in preparation for the move to Colombia.

But I cant find alot of info on joking, flirting, and negging chicks in spanish.

Who can help a brother out?

You are probably going to find that without a hard command of the Spanish language , it's going to be difficult to pick up on idioms, that Colombians use . They are quite different in each Latin American country, and even more so, by region. Here is a site to at least have an idea of some things that you might be able to use .It may be outdated, (since the site has since closed) but it may help a little.

You are correct. Someone that lives in Colombia or travels frequently there is the people that could help me the most.

Although Im sure there is a few sayings that is universal and would be understand in most places.

My spanish isnt great. Id say it is better than basic but def not intermediate. It has come a decent way since I went to Costa Rica a year ago. Colombia was much better and I was able to communicate on a basic level.

this is a good one, and straight from colombia: pero quien pido pollo que mandaron cisne (but who ordered chichen and recieved a swan). One of the few lines you can use and not cross the line of being rude, and on top of everything show off some local shargon.

Other lines (not so sure about the quality):
- mi amor estas re mami (my love you're so "mami"? really hot or something...) do it ironically and it might be a fine one
- si no fuera xxxx(make up some) hasta pronto le paro bolas ( if you wheren't my (make up some) id start shooting straight away. bolas as in bullets and balls, dobbel meaning... a bit dirty, but may work if you make sure they know you're not local
- general words for describing hot girls, aslo very colombiano: suuuper churra, divina pequei, tan gonicitaa, linda mamasita, preciosa bonita, flaka hermosa
- negative words for describing girls, but in a playfull way: boba, burra (sos una boba, when she accidentally drops a glas.

Again, shit changes on the ground so fast. If you got some kind of a look,( you don't have to be Brad Pitt I assure you) and at least have some idea of how to use subject and verbs with some common phrases, then other than that, you might be overloading in such a short time.

General tip: If you have a sense of humor you will find what works for each person, but in general I would avoid sarcasm. Situational humor with the occasional call back works best. Colombians love "pastuso" jokes because people from Pasto are consider "not very smart". I've found that in general women love it when put on the Mexican accent and start talking to them like a macho who "runs this motherfucker" (exagerating it a bit works and that's their clue I'm joking or am I?).

i couldn't agree with this more. I'm not saying sarcasm doesn't exist here in Colombia but it's few and far between. I can count on one hand the number of times I've heard sarcasm here (my favorite type of humor and very common in the NorthEast US).

As far as negging, I'm not expert but sterotyping Colombians (while qualifying that you're not saying ALL Colombians are the same) to the contrary of the behavior you're trying to illicit seems to work ok in my experience. For example stating that Colombians are always late but somehow manage to be uptight at first and concerned about how they are appearing rather then the connection- this might make a second date more on-time and have them loosen up a little bit on the not giving it up too quickly.

Dash if I remember correctly, you're not scared of CC. If this is the case CC & MSN will be of huge assistance to you. You can transition from CC to Facebook/MSN and maybe skype if you're comfortable with it. I think we probably have comparable spanish, right down to the fact that in order I can read/write, then talk, then comprehend in Spanish. Being able to chat on MSN will help your spanish as you build rapport.

I know most people here hate both of those, but not me. It's been an incredible help.

In the interim, there's also some great translator applications for iphones, ipods, ipads. One of them you speak into it in english and it'll translate it into spanish (not perfect but good). Another allows you to take a picture/film a sign in spanish and will translate it. Obviously you don't want these to be crutches but they may be nice to have in a pinch as long as you don't rely on them.

Just in the past 2 weeks i have prb added 30 chicks from CC to my facebook.

I have sent out OVER 100 messages to mostly 7's and up. Alot have not logged in yet so im hoping for an 80% ROI. Looking to add another 40-50 chicks in the next 2 weeks to my facebook.

Not sure how the fuck im gonna manage that many chicks and build connections with all of them before I touch down but im gonna try.

Havent really fucked with msn yet.

The thought of skyping is a bit scary. Dont feel my spanish is good enough for all that yet. lol

Skyping will allow you to determine which girls you want to meet.

Pictures are almost worthless.

I use google translate on the fly if there are some communications
issues and found that most girls understand. You will weed out over
50 % with skype.

No way I would add them to facebook though.

Trust me, you will get a lot of questions about your other female friends.

Plus if something doesn't work out with a girl, you don't want them accessing your friends list
or posting some bs on your wall.

I never had a problem with chicks on my facebook. I have alot of stuff private so that helps.

If a problem arises I can just delete and block them.

I like the ease facebook gives me as im on it alot.

CC isn't for everyone but it's been great to me. To each his own.

He's right, you will get questions about other girls on FB but that's really easily handled. The talk track is that you're moving to a new country and don't know anybody so, you bet your ass I got a lot of friends on there. It's honest, covers all your bases, creates a little bit of urgency, and shows you're in demand. I think it's a good thing that they see others.

As far as management, it'll go easier then you think. Some you'll hear from constantly and then they fall off the face of the earth. You'll wonder what happened, and later they will pop up as 'in a relationship' or you may get deleted altogether. Remember everything you've learned about no word for 'dating' here.

Then mysteriously, out of the blue, you'll get an IM- you can assumed that something didn't work out with that girl and whoever was her 'boyfriend.'

If you plan on building some sort of rapport online (a necessary evil for some girls) you'll have to get into MSN or at least FB messenger pretty deep. If you have no desire to do this, that's fine- it'll only help to manage things as you ask to meet in person she's a little hesitant, and then you just blow her off if she's not immediately down for in person.

Dash, did you decide on a city yet? I'm off to Armenia in a couple weeks to check it out- I don't know if you considered that one or not. Maybe a little too secondary? No idea what it's like.

What im gonna do is stay a week in Cali, Pereira, Armenia, and Manizales and pick the one I like the best.

Pre-trip im leaning towards the coffee triangle (Pereira, Armenia, Manizales) due to it being a short bus ride to Medellin and Cali.

I might be in Colombia much sooner than expected. Could potentially arrive in December. Not sure what I will do but thats weighing heavy in my mind.

Mostly a lurker but I've posted a small handful of times and figure I'll try to help out. I've been to Armenia, didn't go out much at all and wasn't chasing girls so don't feel comfortable dropping a full data sheet, but a few notes

coffee triangle seems pretty slick because you can hit all three of those cities.

have you ever taken a bus in colombia though? if you look at a map what looks to be a 'quick' bus ride can take 4x longer then you would think. for example, bogota is pretty damn close to the coffee triangle but in a bus- 7-8 hours i'm told. the mountains are so vicious and the roads so poor that you'd be shocked how long it takes to cover a short distance. i think from bogota to medellin is more then 12 hours so the coffee triangle to medellin may be a good chunk of time.

good luck though, sounds like a good plan. after a weekend in armenia hopefully i can provide you some information.

Bogota to Armenia = 7 to 8 hours
Armenia to Cali = 3 hours
Armenia to Pereira = 1.5 hours
Armenia to Manizales = 2.5 hours

For catching buses 24/7 (within the coffee triangle) to any of these cities Armenia is the best choice. For living, I would pick Cali or Pereira.

Damn Dash, Korea must really be a hard nut to crack for you so to speak If you are doing all this research on Colombia and you're still living abroad in Korea with all those hotties out there.

If you want to find expression and sayings in colombian spanish google modismos colombianos or dichos colombianos. For flirting you will want to look up Piropos however you will want to take caution with some of all of theses frases as a foreigner. Many words do have two meanings. One for word in particular that you would like is Chimba, it means pussy but for the paisas it also means cool. Por ejemplo Me encanta la chimba o Dash sos la chimba.
