I would think that on a $2,000 income it would be pretty tought to even save $300. I would suggest to anyone to start an Excel spreadsheet and to start recording everything that you spend money on. You will be shocked by how the "small" things add up. Like starbucks coffe in the morning? Smoke? Drink? Want to get nicer tires for your ride (not so small I know)? Gas? Dating? etc...

I'm on a bigger budget than that and only saving $1000 living in a third tier city in South America! I could save $1500 but I don't like being cheap!

G, I've lived on similar budgets like this on my college days. With a car and a 1 bedroom apartment with $750/month rent w/ heat & hot/cold water included. Internet was $25 (student rate) and my cell was $50 (retention rate). Insurance was $75 and the car was a beater. I avoided parking meters and walked 5-10 more minutes. I spent around $50-100/month on gas. Other than food (I ate $3 6" subs a lot), that was it. The cable company forgot to cut my cable connection when I moved in, but I never watched it anyway. I lived in a beautiful town where everything of interest was at most a 20 minute drive. I went to a club maybe once a year and never drank, smoked or did drugs. I had a long term college girlfriend at the time and we did lots of stuff together and I really did enjoy my life. I was a bit of a lazy ass in college and had wayyyy too much free time. Yeah I had to be a cheap ass but why give fuck about what other people think.

A parking ticket was $20, and it usually was a 10 minute walk to the ticket office to dispute it. It wasn't financial ruin. It's entirely possible live on that sort of budget alone or close to it but you can't live in a big city with it. I bought and sold stuff on craigslist instead of from the store and I avoided small shit that adds up like Starbucks and ate at home or subway when I couldn't. I had one bad car event in a year for $400, but otherwise was fairly on target.

I give solid advice to a poster.

After calling the G man out on that I then go and squash his talk of it being a fantasy one last time by putting ALL the numbers together for both living alone and living with roommates that clearly shows being able to save 500-1000 dollars is MORE than doable.

G realizing defeat trys to say one last time the numbers are a fantasy and that im changing my numbers everytime. Funny he doesnt mention what figures are supposedly not plausible and doesnt mention what numbers "I changed". In one last ditch attempt to save face he is forced to revert to bringing up things in other past threads.

Then he ironically trys to say I like to talk about stuff I dont understand when he clearly doesnt understand the living expenses and possibilities of normal blue collar all american cities.

However, I do agree with your points on saving money and it can be done.

But I do believe that one can cut costs dramatically, there are ways to reduce unnecessary spending.

Cook your own food. I do this and not only does it mean that I get more food to eat, but it's cheaper than eating out.

Pre-load on booze before clubs. I see no point in wasting 7 bucks on a watered down vodka. I spend twice that for a bottle of voddy and I can hit that straight and arrive at the club pre-fcuked up..if I decide that will be a drinking night.

Parking tickets can mess with savings yes and so can car maintenance. However, car maintenance is not a regular bill so you cannot factor that into savings.

And nothing goes exactly to plan but give our take with the action plan that Dash laid out, a decent saving proposal can be put into a effect.

To add to that, I would suggest picking up some side venture one can engage in, to put additional pocket money in their hands.

Relying sheerly on penny pinching savings is a miserable way to get to retirement.

Some of the principles listed are very valuable.

From what I've heard, living in NC is dirt cheap. I heard you can run car insurance for about 30 bucks a month. You can also purchase a home for about 100k or so.

Put a fat down payment on that bitch, and pimp that ho and you accelerate your retirement plans.

The 2k figure was for AFTER taxes. If im subtracting the expenses from 2k that would mean im clearing 2k.

Someone that clears (meaning after taxes) 2K a month would make roughly 34,000K a year salary

I did the excel sheet thing when i lived in Hollland and was shocked. I made 1950 euro net a month and spent 1300 of it on a house,insurance,utils,car,gas and cable/phone and internet. This was without going out,buying clothes, holidays and stuff

I´m doing way better now while traveling, thats were the real budgetting comes in.

I,m also planing on living abroad some day.

Brazil would be nice but would take a huge monthly budget to have a decent live. In the phillipines you can have the rich easy life for 1000 dollars a month. No need to learn a language there as everyone speaks English and girls are easy.

I've learned that putting together a monthly list of expenses is not as easy as just listing the primary draws from your account: Rent, car, insurance,utilities, cell phone, food, etc, etc.
I always end up spending a good 25% of what I spend on my fixed monthly expenses and I can almost always never fully trace where the fuck that money went. And I'm frugal and watch every penny like a hawk. That's just the way it works out. So I would recommend always adding in a good 25%. If you think your bills are $2000 per month, count on them being $2500 and so on.

Northeast corridor post-industrial city example (not DC, NY, or Boston)..

1000 square foot apartment $500. Shared with one roommate, $250 mo/rent.

Utilities - 150/month (averaged over the year), 75 apiece.

These two could go significantly lower in South Philly (175 month w/ utils per person for a shared 3bdroom). I'm sure similar examples could be found in Baltimore or Providence.

Food budget 300 month, mostly cooking at home or eating at the carts.

Bike - $150 bucks one time fee. Phillycarshare or zipcare for times when 4 wheels are needed.

Art studio - 150/month.

Cell phone - 35/month (verizon).

Assorted crap - 100/month

Going out mostly to house parties & basement shows.

Total ~910

My weekly take-home at the time was $400 for 20 hours.

Not included in this budget: health insurance. I was paying $200/month for an HMO, which would push that up to $1110, a little tight but still roughly $500/month savings.

This was my budget for a while. Pretty decent lifestyle. I knew kids in Philly who were dropping $350/month or less, I think this would be impossible w/o Checkers/Wendy's & dumpster diving, personally I wouldn't be able to handle it. They'd do promotional gigs for movies, photography, etc., or a medical study every few months.

I thought that I could retire at 55 so I did, that was August 1, now it's October 23 and I'm going back to work with the same company. It will be almost like retirement, no more going to sea and full time in Brazil working as a port engineer. I have an apartment in Rio so I will get to spend more time there.

I am with dash on this, his theory on spending is on point. If you spend all your salary in a month then you really need to improve your spending skills.This is also one of the reasons that i dont drive, driving will just make you spend lots of your money.

If you want to do great in business, spend max 30% of your salary and the other 70% invest.

Most people cant save 70% unless you making above average salary.

Even 50% is difficult and takes some discipline and living a modest life stateside.

Im about to have implement my own advice lol Moving to south fla in two weeks and will need to be saving green every month to bring with me to Colombia.

I figured my FIXED monthly bills will be something like

150 - 200 Room (utilities included)

200 Food

150 Car Insurance

60 Phone

Total Fixed Roughly 600 - 800
