Paleo Diet - Do I need greens?

Paleo Diet - Do I need greens?

I've started a Paleo type of diet at the recommendation of this forum. I'm wondering, how much, if any, greens do I need to be eating? I don't really salad that much. I eat broccoli and asparagus probably once a week and that's about it.

I do take greens plus powder everyday though.

Of course. Paleo means lots of vegetables. I like kale and broccoli and have them daily, sometimes juiced and sometimes cooked.

Dr Johnson rumbles with the RawGod. And lives to regret it.

Greens are probably the most important thing to have in your diet on a regular basis. Eat them often.

If you want to be able to poop without blowing out veins in your forehead, yes, you do need some greens and grains. Or at least a fiber supplement. Look up daily fiber recommendations.

It does not matter what diet you are on. You need to eat greens. The average guy getting a serving of veggies once every 3 months is probably one of the key reasons we have so many health problems today.

Check out what greens did for her.

Okay.

Can I get them via a supplement such as Greens+ instead of eating them every day? What about just putting two cups of greens in with my smoothie in the morning? I've heard they blend up nicely.

You're not going to get the same kind of absorption from a supplement as you do from the actual food. Your body is optimized to absorb food, not supplements.

You need to eat actual greens or juice them, ideally some of both. As others have said, it's one of the most important things to have in a good diet.

Pro tip: a lot of the important nutrients in greens are best absorbed in the presence of fatty acids. So put some dressing or olive oil on your salad and have some butter with your spinach or broccoli to get the maximum benefits.

I'll go against the Grain here and say you needn't bother with rabbit food.

You absolutely need to eat greens. Greens+ is great if your intake has been a bit low one day, but like Oz said the majority should be from whole food sources.

The above article by spirited is junk.

Yes I'm on a paleo diet and I go through between 500g and 1kg of fibrous vegetables a day.

I drink a green super food every morning in lieu of breakfast, but I also eat many greens during lunch and dinner. I just purchased a NutriBullet to pulverize some greens. I have lost twenty pounds since new years by eating mostly greens and very little meat -- and no bread, dairy, or sugar (except fruit).

Sounds like you really dont wanna grow up and eat veggies. Dont.

Good luck having earth shattering bowel movements everytime. Impacted stool is no fun, I hear.
Butt cancer is also a downer. Polyps, fissures, and a host of other fun things can come later in life.

Or YOLO. Choice is yours.

Eskimos don´t eat veggies. So is it really that important?

What have eskimos achieved in disciplines of science, art or sports?

Do you want to look like an eskimo?

Do you think Eskimo's choose their life and voluntary walked in their north or they are descendents of losers ho were pushed back to polar circle by other more powerful and more veggie consuming tribes?

If Inuit diet is healthy, it's probably because no one has yet started to feed Whales with GMO foods or cover them with pesticides. But it doesn't mean it cannot be improved by organic greens.

I think they did pretty well. I don´t know why they didn´t move south maybe they thought it was to easy. Maybe they loved ice. Though it´s a weak option.

"Our species was not designed to subsist on a single, optimal diet. What is remarkable about human beings is the extraordinary variety of what we eat. We have been able to thrive in almost every ecosystem on the Earth, consuming diets ranging from almost all animal foods among populations of the Arctic to primarily tubers and cereal grains among populations in the high Andes.”

I am reading a book right now that discusses the research into that very issue ("The Queen of Fats"). Sure, if you want your diet to consist of fifty percent whale and seal parts, be my guest. Moreover, those health benefits occur primarily from ingestion of the blubber, bone, and organs, not the meat.

http://www.amazon.com/Queen-Fats-Omega-3...en+of+fats

A scientist famously ate a diet of only seal and whale meat for one year. His antics were all the rage in scientific circles in England. Alas, comprehensive blood tests established that he did not achieve the health benefits of the Eskimos. Why? He did not eat what they ate (i.e., bones, blubber, and organ meat).

Even if you wanted a diet of blubber, bone, and organs, I am not sure where you would buy whale and seal parts. I would argue that the extrapolation of such theories from extremely limited information is not a rational means of making decisions. [Image: wink.gif]

The one thing that you can extrapolate from the research into the diet of Eskimos, and coastal Scandinavian peoples, is that the intake of fish (and fish oil) is very healthy and should be a part of any healthy diet. You can also readily buy fish -- as opposed to seal and whale.

The main reason why you need to consume green vegetables is Vitamin K. They are the main source of Vitamin K. The good news is that you can get Vitamin K from about 25g of raw spinach (about a handful of uncooked spinach, which reduces down to nothing when you cook it).

If you have a juicer, juice a large cucumber and about 2 stalks of celery, and you've got your daily Vitamin K, without turning your drink bitter from other leafy greens.

People get all worked up over needing to eat large amounts of green leafy vegetables - you don't. If you eat an assortment of foods, then you should be getting the rest of your micronutrients from those. Vitamin K is the only thing you need from green veggies, and it doesn't take much at all.

There have been a couple of times that I experimented with eating only meat for a couple of weeks at a time and I didn't have that experience at all. In fact it came out clean as a whistle every time. From what I can gather from what I have read, if you're eating clean and have enough fat in your diet, you don't need as much fibre as you think. Two weeks is only a short time for conclusive evidence though.

Eat cruciferous vegetables if you're doing the paleo diet. They're anti estrogenic and pretty easy to prepare.

I wonder about that Eskimo article.

Somewhat unrelated, but while Eskimos/Inuit may have had it good with their traditional diet in the past, it seems they are getting slowly poisoned now. A lot of industrial air pollutants drift into the Arctic Circle and condense in the colder temps, contaminating their traditional food supply. These substances can bioaccumulate in fats, and they eat a very high fat diet.

Apparently even with traditional/paleo type diets you cannot fully escape the consequences of the world we live in.

Anyway, that aside, I do believe you'll need greens unless you are eating every part of the animal carcass. Typical meats in the west are mostly just muscle tissue. Not the same as what hunter/gatherers ate.

If only you knew how bad things really are.

The aim of the paleolithic diet is to mimic the hunter-gatherer diet. Therefore, the vast majority of the volume of food you eat should consist of vegetables. Also, keep in mind that meat and seafood are also very important for the paleolithic diet.
