I thought Charlie Murphey was darkness
From the couple half days I spent in Melbourne, the place is tight. Didn't have a chance to game there, though, as I was literally only in the city for a few hours between destinations, but all the girls I spoke to were really friendly and open, and all reports I've heard point to a loose system of ethics (works both for and against you)
Where I live, Perth, is one of the most beautiful cities going, and the beaches are top notch along the entire coast - lovely white sand with lovely clear water. If you're into surfing, the waves get better the further you head south, as a general rule - margaret river has some of the best waves around. Girls are generally supportive of men, aren't overly concerned about the stigma of being slutty, and there are a lot of young hotties if you're in the right places.
BUT
It's probably one of the least exciting places to live. There's not much culture because of the general lack of shit to do (hence why alcoholism is pretty rampant). The city is very spread out - we have something like 1.7 million people over an area about half the size of Sydney. There are minimal clubs (most aren't worth going to either), and the bars are mostly saturated with tradesmen. Most clubs stop serving energy drinks and shots after 12, and all alcohol after 2. Nothing is open past about 3-4am. Everything is expensive as fuck, alcohol and smokes being even more so (around $17 for a 20 pack of mid range smokes and $30-50 for a carton of shitty-mid range beer or 700mL bottle of spirits). It's only really a good place to live if you're working in the mines - even then I'd rather fly out to SEA than back here - or if you're old and ready to retire and settle. Student life isn't too bad (besides how expensive everything is), but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here.
That being said, if you like warm weather, beaches, mostly agreeable women, and drinking, you'll definitely enjoy yourself here in the summer - I wouldn't stay too long though.

Not many black guys in Melbourne. I would meet a black American maybe once a year max.
Those that are black are usually Somali/Ugandan/Sudanese and they usually live in poorer western suburbs.
In my opinion if you dressed well, lived near the city and brought your swag you would clean up, especially among hipster girls (mainstream in Melbourne). The sometimes negative bias shown towards Americans by Australians would not apply to you as people would not want to look like they were being racist. You would make friends easily. Girls would want to prove their tolerance by sleeping with you. They might be curious about what you would be like.
If you went to hip hop nights at YOYO on Saturdays, you would have huge status straight off the bat. People at that club identify "black" with "cool". Even at a hip hop club there's still not that many black guys there because Melbourne's ethnic composition is mostly White/Asian/Wog/Euro backpacker/Sth American exchange student. You could get into high-class clubs like Baroq with ease as you would be perceived to be adding "street cred" to the venue.
You would have to put up with lots of dumb questions but basically that's because there are almost no black people. Aussies tend to travel a lot to SthEast Asia and Europe but again not that many black people there either. Before I moved to London I had never really seen black people before. All I knew was what I saw on TV and read in newspapers.
I'd consider it. Good quality of life in Melbourne. People are tolerant liberals for the most part, especially when you live close to the city centre. You can pick up a 1 year working visa if you're a US citizen under 31yo.
You can go on surfing trips down the coast, earn $21 per hour doing unskilled work, go on domestic adventures to the Red Centre/Great Barrier Reef/Central Coast, places that are beautiful and once-in-a-lifetime experiences that most Americans, particularly black Americans, never get the chance to experience. You could easily save up for a trip to Thailand too where you could bang backpackers, check out Bangkok and go scuba diving etc - but forget about the Thais though, they are obsessed with skin colour.

A lot of the Aussie chicks I put down during my travels were from Brisbane.

^ No.
Just be black essentially.
There is no one else you can be compared to because black Americans are so few and far between. There is no frame of reference.
If you're American you will not be grouped with African immigrants.
Just be cool and have solid self-esteem. Do this and you are set. Anything you do will be a massive anomaly just because of your ethnic background. If it makes you uncomfortable being a super-minority don't bother coming. If you're up for the challenge, you will do well.

As for being the only black person, at this point, that would be a breath of fresh air. I live in the DC area (not by choice) where there are plenty of blacks, but I've never experienced as much racism from non-black transplant yuppies and internal racism from ghetto ass local blacks as I've had in this swamphole that is long overdue to economically go the way of Detroit.

I was in the lobby of a San Francisco hostel last year. There was this one brotha in there with one of the most exotic-looking straight up beautiful white girls I've seen in a long time(at least in person). Easily fashion model material. Had a totally sweet and bubbly personality too. I asked where she was from and she said Brisbane and said it's a great place to visit if I ever go down under. The brotha lived in SF and somehow they maintained a loooooong distance relationship. And this dude was only average looking at best and not even stylish. He seemed like a nice guy but nothing about his vibe seemed like he was alpha or had amazing game. He would've have had a snowballs chance in hell of nabbing an American blonde girl that hot.

This is exactly what my boy in Melbourne told me. He said don't even bother visiting OZ because it's crazy expensive and that you'll find Aussie chicks all over Thailand in full party vacay mode. SEA is obviously far cheaper than OZ as well. Something to think about.
