You must loose the gut! From my experience, women are primarily attracted to athletic 6'2" or taller type men with well defined muscles and 6-pack abs. A gut is a deal-breaker for 99% of women!
I was/am in your same predicament. I'm 43 and developed serious oneitis for this chick at work. One time when we were conversing, she remarked "I want a man who takes care of himself". I interpreted this as code for "You're fat!". I knew I had to dump the gut to build attraction. In January I was wearing size 42 jeans and weighed 250lbs. Now I'm down to size 38 and weigh 219. I'm still loosing. Hope to get down to 190lbs (I'm 6'). Here is how I did it:
First: join a local gym (YMCA, LA Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, etc.). Go to the gym after work EVERY NIGHT. You cannot skip a night! You must resist the temptation to make excuses why you can't go to the gym on a particular night! At the gym, do 30 minutes on the treadmill at a speed of at least 5.2 with an oscillating incline that varies from 0 to 3%. When your run is over (about 3 miles), go over to the weight area for another 30 minutes and work the machines (preacher curl, lat pull down, chest press, straight "military" press, seated row, triceps extension, "pek-deck"/fly machine, abs machine). That is one hour each night every night!
Second: CANCEL DINNER. That's right: DO NOT EAT DINNER ANYMORE. Only eat two meals a day, breakfast and lunch. Skip dinner completely. I've determined that eating dinner makes you fat. Besides, I've noticed that I'm not as hungry when I get back from the gym at night after a hard workout, so skipping dinner is not that difficult if you workout before.
Tip #1: one thing that might happen after a month is you may develop something called "shinsplints" from running on the treadmill. If your shin bones feel like they are broken and you can barely jog without pain, you have developed shinsplints. Think of shinsplints like being shit-tested by a woman you want to bang: you must blow past it. I had shinsplints really bad for about three weeks about a month after I started working out and after that, the pain attenuated, and isn't a problem any more.
Tip #2: another thing that might happen is you will develop a sharp pain in your knees where your knee cap (called the patella) is. This condition is called "Runner’s Knee" and is a real pain in the ass. What I do is I wear Pro-Tec Patellar Tendon Straps when I run on the mill. This helps a bit and I recommend it.
Well, that is what I do and I have seen the results. You can do it too. From one middle ager to another - good luck loosing that gut!

For me to be in the best shape, all that really works is to eat one big meal a day. Sometimes it's lunch and sometimes it's dinner. I realize that it would not work for everyone, but it works for many people. As with MidlifeCrisis, exercise generally kills my appetite so I almost always eat before going to the gym.
I have had this "runner's knee" condition in the past, but not lately. For some reason I don't have that knee problem from running alone. The combination of running and dancing is what kills my knees. Since I don't dance quite as much as I used to, the knee problem has been virtually nonexistent for some time.

I do..
The best way is to do:
A) Nightclub. Game while drinking vodka and tonic. No beers or sugary soda drinks. Cardio on the dancefloor.
and
B) Resteraunts) While eating salads, lean meat and minimum carbs. No desserts. Walk to the resteraunt and back.
and finally
C) Daygame. Talk to girls while running, swimming, cycling, walking a dog, climbing a hill etc.
Who cares what the best choice is. Any choice is good as long as it is not getting in the way of you losing weight.
Learn some time management skills and look for overlaps between fitness and game opportunities.
There is plenty of advice on here about weight loss and gym plans. No excuses

A fat lawyer, doctor etc. is still seriously disadvantaged when approaching attractive woman in their 20's. A guy with an average job and in good / reasonable shape would do far better more than likely all other things equal. Lose the weight. It's not really that complicated nor difficult. Unless you are extremely obese say 300+ pounds there's no reason why you can't be in respectable shape in under 6 months.

I don't know if it's just the local sexual market in my city, but I've seen a few fat middle-aged guys with tiny petite young girls. Let's say an overweight middle aged man wants to allocate 10 hours a week to approaching women. Would he be better off spending those 10 hours in clubs, in restaurant bars, or doing daygame?
My feeling is that those 10 hours are best spent doing daygame. (Obviously time should be allocated to get into shape as well.)

Do a lot of your daygame outside in parks or malls where you will be walking. You will end up losing fat by walking so much. Hit the gym for 30-40 minutes of intense weightlifting , then hit the park for daygame.

I don't think its that people missed it so much as its kinda overly simplistic in its premise.
Your point assumes that someone should only use the "best" way, when you can actually still attempt in each area, even if it isn't your "best".
