The very fact that synthwave hasn't taken off as a worldwide cultural trend in normie world whereby you could hear it all the time, is bizarre.

This stuff is danceable, sounds so good, takes talent and is positive. Easy to replay and listen to. There are literally no downsides to it. The vocal tracks should certainly be massive hits (listed below). Id actually listen to radio if this were "the" thing.

Was it just born in the wrong era to gain appreciation? Is the cultural zeitgeist too sullen (you'd think they want the escapism at the least), is it considered too white or too 80's sounding for the coming world? Its now 2019, and we've had this trend for a few years now, but its only a subculture still. Its all still shit EDM in the mainstream and undistinctive wailing, the film Drive and Tron Legacy were big primers for synthwave-like sound, but those were at the beginning of the decade, its made to a few film soundtracks since, but that's about it.

Is it wasted on the plebs?

This. It's not particularly catchy, unique, or really that special and this is coming from someone who loves 80s music. You could stick it on an 80s station between some Starship and classic rock and no one would bat an eye at it.

Yeah, coming from someone who grew up in that time...none of the videos I've listened to in this thread sound anything remotely like the 80's New Wave sound.

There's no catchy melody, the beat is all wrong, and the vocals are auto-tuned on half of them.

Smile Like You Mean It by The Killers back in 2004 was a nice evolution on the New Wave sound but even that didn't sound like it was from the 80s.

NRW is not supposed to be an evolution of the New Wave. It's just a catchy name.

The music is more about the 80s aesthetic than the exact sounds of the 80s. It's the soundtrack to a neon-soaked Blade Runner series where everyone dresses like they're in Miami Vice.

Couple of reasons:

1) The 80's already happened.
2) The main 80's trends have already passed, it works in 20 year (generational) cycles and we're onto the 90's and naughties trends now.
3) It's too cheesy and niche. Same reason K-pop doesn't "take off".

If it does take off, it'll happen after you don't like it anymore, or at least after you don't like the second or third wave of it, when the bandwagon jumpers have recycled it too many times.
