Los Angeles Data Sheet - 2018

Saw this thread so thought I would wade in with one of my overly long nightlife reports. I went to LA in July for couple weeks with a friend against my better judgement having been there before and though it was a scruffy dump full of very weird people. Followed advice on the forum, this time was actually awesome, even extended my stay (LA is still a real fucked up place tho). Was hot as balls, damm! Got an overpriced apartment in Weho with a pool that was pretty nice and didn’t even venture to downtown. Went out every night and almost died (getting old, mid 30s)

Found it ridiculously easy to open girls there, in fact they opened us most of the time which was surprising. I had always thought LA people to be way too aloof to be impressed by an arsey British accent that they must hear all the time in such a global city… but I was wrong. The girls were generally trashy and fat but there are plenty of model type gems and vulnerable transplants but you have to hunt for them, similar to London. Also lots of really nice Persian milfs which I didn’t expect. Anyway… onto the nightlife:

Catch
This was a really nice place. The venue looks very inviting inside and I can see why the chicks love it for their instagram. Unlike some of the other restaurants I visited, the bar area was larger and scene here was buzzing even on weeknights. We ate outside on the terrace one evening and surprisingly the food was ace. Probably my favourite civilised place overall in Los Angeles. Plenty of quality girls here in groups.

1 oak
This was a place I didn’t want to go to, after having visions of rap hell but I was persuaded to go by friends on a drunken bender. I think we paid 20 bucks each to get in, so the door wasn’t exactly tough. Luckily when we entered it was EDM night rather than hip hop night and I have to say I was impressed with the crowd. The venue itself was smallish but lots and lots of very nice girls and many douchey looking guys posing zero competition. However, the club was incredibly loud to the point of nausea. We stayed till closing and spent at least an hour playing gutter game outside the venue which was fun indeed.

Highlight Rooms
Well this place was crazy, and probably rates as one of the best clubs I’ve ever been to (and believe me I’ve been to a lot of fucking clubs). This place was everything I envisaged a Hollywood club should be. We choose it mainly because it was outdoors and ended up going twice at the weekends. The talent and ratio here was immense, drunk trashy girls in shorts twerking and falling on the floor, russian models, people smoking blunts everywhere. Awesome… gets the Alotovmuff award for best night out in LA for sure.

Skybar at Mondrian
This was another excellent venue that I had been to on my last trip to LA when it was a dead weeknight. This time on the weekend it was pretty awesome, smallish but good layout and definitely classier and more refined than Highlight Rooms. Good talent, good ratios.

EP&LP
Started our nights here several times as it was nearby but wasn’t really that great. Outdoor space with nice views but crowd was a bit young and hipsterish for my liking. No top level women, just average trash. Big line to get in too. Don’t see the appeal frankly.

Cecconis
Boring italian restaurant that was recommended as having a bar scene but seemed old and stuffy. Waste of time, mediocre food.

Tao
Pretty spectacular asian restaurant that reminded me of Buddha Bar. The bar at the top is quite large, seemed to have a proliferation of very nice persian girls. Recommend this place for warmup drinks definitely.

Laurel hardware

Small bar with terrace outside, unremarkable but pretty good crowd and bartender was a geezer. Went there several times and found it very easy to speak to people here. Looks like a dive from the outside, didn't realize it was actually in a former hardware store doh.

Good times at Davey Waynes
Hipster pub style with band playing (pretty good as you would expect for LA), biggish garden for smoking. Didn’t like the crowd… too cool for school and generally ugly. Made a girl cry here during a heated political conversation which filled me with pride.

Avalon
Went here late on one of our benders as it seemed to be the only place open. Turned out to be a ravey dump so we left after about 20 mins. Weird people, shithole of the highest order.

Beauty and Essex

Dumb name but nice looking restaurant with a small bar. Plenty of model chicks. Stopped in here as it’s opposite highlight room. Recommend.

No vacancy
Heard this was an elite spot so thought we’d check it out. Huge scrum waiting to get in (no discernible queue)… the people outside looked like utter losers (presumably why they weren’t getting in straight away but hey) so we didn’t even try and blag our way in we just walked off.

Ysabel
Nice restaurant vibe with nice chilled outdoor atmosphere and indoor bar. Lots of hot girls on dates at the tables but no real talent at the bar. Definitely worth a look tho.

Employees Only
Small speakeasy type place. Again the bar here is quite small but the crowd was reasonably upmarket so worth a look.

Delilah
This was the only place that rejected us (and I have good door game believe me) so I’m guessing it must be awesome and full of hotties. Shame.

Harlowe

Mentioned on the forum a lot and nearby so I stepped over the lake of piss that surrounded the doorway and entered this place with trepidation one weekday night. Was basically a shithole pub full of men. Guess it was the wrong night.

Weird place in koreatown (I think)

So this was an interesting one. We were invited to an afterparty by a mixed group we met drunkenly at Highlight and had visions of heading to some mansion in the hills to rub shoulders with the great and the good. Sadly it wasn’t to be… instead we were taken to some weird place that had these kind of large booth rooms in koreatown where everyone was off their heads on white and there seemed to be a number of hookers lurking as well. We stayed for a bit and then got the hell out of there as it all seemed a bit sketchy. Kinda funny tho as we were wasted.

Overall I had a great time and think i got the LA experience I was hoping for. Really tho the amount of homeless people and junkies everywhere is really out of control… santa monica and hollywood were pretty sketchy even in the daytime. Would I visit again… definitely. Would I live there… hell no!

^ Much appreciate the contribution!

I think a lot of our differences on some spots are explained by age, as well on the times we go out. I'm generally a Thursday through Saturday night guy, so my reviews are based on that. For example, Harlowe on a Friday evening will be far from how you described it, but I definitely can't argue that on a weekday it looks different since I haven't been.

That said I am surprised you didn't like EP/LP. I feel like the chicks there can absolutely be top quality, maybe not quite what you see at Delilah or Beauty & Essex but still pretty damn hot. I haven't been in a few months so maybe its changed, will have to see it this weekend.

Anyway glad you had a fun time man. Gutter game in front of 1OAK and Bootsy can be a laugh!

Where the hell do FOB mexicans stay? Even East LA rentals are ridiculous and I thought it was a mexican slum. For a city with such a large metro area its outer periphery rental should be cheap as well but that doesn't seem to be the case.

East LA/Boyle Heights are expensive because you have easy access to light rail lines and you're close to DTLA, Cal State LA, Pasadena and five major freeways.

But if you like your Mexican girls chola then go to South Central (area off the 110 freeway south of the 10 freeway) and Watts/Compton.

If you like your Mexican girls paisa then Van Nuys/North Hills/Reseda/Winnetka/Canoga Park.

And if you like your Mexican girls real paisa then Sylmar/Paicoma/Sunland.

A lot of the Mexican girls (not just FOBs) actually go out in LA from places like Fontana, the Inland Empire, Palmdale, etc.

They all pile up in a civic together and go "out on the town". That's why you ask early on in the convo where are they from. Oh yeah, a lot of girls will also say the live "downtown" but they really live in Boyle Heights or East LA with their parents.

Any thoughts about Hermosa beach gaming over night ? Because my friend who lives in LA , live in that area , he said we can go there , it has some bars and one club

Or Downtown would be still easier to pull for a Thursday night ?

It is EXTREMELY hit and miss based on the actual Thursday night you go there. Some of the college kids (CSLB, LMU, etc) will go out there on Thursday nights and its slammin. Other times, they don't and its dead and filled with ghetto chicks and mostly dudes.

Hermosa tried to kill their nightlife a few years ago, and I think they just chased away the locals from going out. The best quality and vibe is at Tower12.

Day drinking is still very real in Venice/Santa Monica. Whaler has been absolutely awesome lately.

Bungalow is probably ok, but its honestly not my vibe.

Online dating: Tinder/Bumble in the suburbs. Only Bumble in the city (Tinder is really bad within city limits). Not much more to say haha, it's basically the same shit as anywhere else. I haven't done online in a long time, I had a great time on Tinder a year or two ago but the quality went way downhill and the hottest chicks are hard to get out.

Daytime:
- I'm not a traditional "daygame" person, but if that's your thing, go to The Grove, the 3rd Street Promenade, Beverly Drive, or Melrose. Plenty of cute girls.
- As an alternative, you can rent a cruiser bike and ride along the beach from Samo to Venice (and further), and just talk to ppl that way. It's a fun time, you'll get a tan, some exercise, and probably meet some girls. I met a really cute Swedish girl this way last year. Way more fun than walking around a mall.
- For daytime drinking, Whaler is up there, I really enjoy going there, it's a good vibe There's dozens of spots that have boozy brunch. Overland Cafe and Sunny Spot are two off the top of my head that are good. Day parties are more of a summer thing, and I wrote about a few of those earlier. If you have a group who makes reservations and $ to blow, No Jealousy can be lit for a Sunday. I went once w friends and it was insane.

GREAT datasheet, my man. I'm based in Santa Monica, and got out of an LTR fairly recently (3 yrs). I went to hit up The Victorian and Bungalow recently and noticed that they are not nearly as good as they used to be. I kinda expected this as bars and clubs don't stay hot forever. The flip side of this is when you find something good, it can be absolutely amazing how many attractive girls there are there. I will try out The Lincoln and report back.

I gotta say it's nice to have a constructive page about Los Angeles, rather than a bunch of lazy brokeasses complaining about how LA isn't living to their expectations. I love Los Angeles, but this city doesn't OWE anyone anything. Either sink or swim.

I am looking for wings, so perhaps we will meet up at some point. The same offer goes to other people based in LA, who are interested in gaming and not complaining about LA!

Would Venice and Santa Monica be good to visit in November/December still? I heard it's not swimming weather but how are the beaches?

Probably 70s both months. Shouldn't rain much. Daytime should be fine at Bungalow and Whaler.

November they may put the tarps up at the Whaler and Bungalow (which I hate). You may have a random warm day, but its a pretty constant temperature.

Hey I like this thread thanks RDF!

I'm visiting the Santa Monica/Venice Beach area in a couple weeks. I've never rented out a car before. Would you all recommend renting a car out for LA? Primary purpose is to visit the beaches easier instead of walking. Secondary purpose is to bang girls in the rental. I just want a backup plan just in case my airbnb host watches me like a hawk. I have the entire place to myself but I just want that second option. If I'm not mistaken LA is known for carjackings so I obviously am aware of that.

I'm only staying near the beach since I'm not a night life guy (most likely won't be visiting Hollywood). I've already read that LA is spaced out so it wouldn't make any sense to drive through 20 minutes of traffic and kill the mood.

Yeah bro, I would rent a car if you're staying for more than a few days. It would let you explore a ton of beaches that you wouldn't really be able to get to on Uber or public transit. Don't just go to Santa Monica and Venice. There's dozens of other great beaches like Manhattan/Hermosa, El Mat, even Newport, and those would be harder to get to on Uber.

As for car jackings, I wouldn't trip about it. In my years of living here, I've never known a single person who has had their car jacked, and only two times have I known somebody to have their car broken into (ironically both times were in nice areas).

I wouldn't rent a car. Uber and uber pool is really cheap in LA and is everywhere. You never want to have to go back to where your car is parked, just a hassle.

Less than 20 bucks to get to hermosa. You can get to hollywood around that much too.

Bird scooters are everywhere as well.

DUI checkpoints are around venice and marina del rey on weekends. You can go downtown on the Expo line too pretty easily from downtown Santa Monica.

Parking sucks, no one drives anywhere. I live in the area and i never drive on weekends unless i'm going to Target or something.

The Abbott Kinney Festival is on Sunday. I would highly advise attending that. They close off the entire street, every girl on the Westside will be there in their best Coachella outfit. Beer gardens on every corner, live music, etc.

Its impossible to park, take Uber or bike/Bird there if you can.

This city is such a POS in so many ways. The best quality is found in surrounding areas like Orange County, the long strips between LA and San Francisco, the valleys. All broke, girls-in-groups who descend on the real city for a few hours in the night, there to be seen and stay together, not be seen and taken home by someone - that's unless they're alone, which is rare if they aren't staying in the actual city.

I dream of deciding on my perfect spot in South to mid Cali that's within 1.15hr commute to LA City, while logistically being perfect & even closer to a good mix of latina & black women. Damn, i wish there were more black women throughout LA County (outside of Oakland i can't think of anywhere not-too-sketchy with a sizable population).

I want to complain about LA all day, but i'm more determined to make there work, than anywhere else work. It's just all about social life + game - it's so fucking hard there; but the weather, sights, nearby deserts, beaches, rock formations, vineyards etc. just make it the best place to be, non-negotiable, for nature in the USA. So varied & stimulating; a place to settle down, if possible, while just taking trips to NY, Europe, Colorado etc.

Lowkey or maybe highkey one of the most ugly-built cities too. There's for sure 5-10 really nice looking roads, neighborhoods, tree-lined pavements - and i like Hollywood Hills a lot - but 90% of the buildings look like lego blocks which haven't been built on. When I was younger i had no idea how passe LA City actually is.

Black and Latinas get down. But don’t sleep on Asian possibilities. My buddy mopped it up in Koreatown but recently made the switch to Irvine which he said is Asian overload. You just have to do 3 date game.

One of my friends is working there for a week so I couldn't pass up the opportunity to stay in a hotel downtown for free and also see what LA is about. I'm going to be looking to turn up as soon as I land Friday and wont turn down until Monday when I leave haha. Bring on the models!

Im hitting up LA in April 2019, i want to do all the trashy touristy shit by day.. and attempt to partake in the women by night... Im looking at either SAMO or Hollywood.. in your opinion which do you think would suite me?

I prefer relaxed beer gardens and casual bars over pumping clubs, and got a strong Aussie/ English accent..

^ From that short bit I would say Santa Monica/Venice will be better for you mainly because of your preference for more chill bars over clubs, but you also don't give a lot of info. Here's a few other things to consider.

--- For day time, do you like the beach/outdoors or prefer exploring museums/urban architecture? If beach, Samo; if the other stuff, Hwood. April isn't always the best month for the beach but it should be nice enough.

--- Do you prefer bimbo-type white girls, or are you into latinas, black girls, asians? If white girls, Samo/Venice; if you like more diversity, Hwood.

--- Do you plan to be here mostly on weekdays or the weekend? Santa Monica is pretty quiet from Monday to Wednesday, and even Thursday is tame. Perhaps on those days you can uber to Hwood.

-- Are you rolling solo or with some friends? Samo can be more challenging solo since people are often in really big groups; far from impossible, but I've had more success flying solo in Hwood.

-- Do you want to rent a car or prefer to stick w uber/public transit? Samo is much more do-able without a car, especially with the Bird/Lime scooters around on every corner now. Hwood is doable without a car also, but it isn't as pleasant of an area to walk in.

Hope this helps.

I agree, Santa Monica would be your best bet. Stay as close to the 3rd Street Promenade as you can afford. From there you can go to bars/lounges in SM/Venice, take the Metro Rail to Downtown LA pretty easily as well which also have some casual bars. Aussies tend to do really well in Hermosa Beach, but its kind of further away from anything else. If you are there for a while, its probably worth an uber over there on a Thursday night.
