Of course the journalists that hyped up this company back in the day don't suffer anything. We don't even know who they are, unless we were to look them up.

Now they're free to push more junk news around and create another fraudulent company.

I think Tesla is the next Theranos to fall, likely in the next 6 to 12 months.

Psychologically, women can handle this sort of scenario better is my hypothesis. I think it may have something to do with understanding that "there will always be another man around to bail me out". I don't think that they understand the real cost of it all.

Whereas men will obviously get into a state of stress and pull an "Elon" more frequently, due to knowing that there's nobody coming to save them, and understand the cost of failure.

It's a hypothesis, and obviously there are outliers on both sides of the equation.

Fact of the matter is most terrible CEOs jettison with golden parachutes and are often given more and more chances to run companies afterwards. True accountability in the C-suite is rare. So much money pissed away by so few.

I find Elizabeth Holmes's story very, very strange. I am not demeaning her entrepreneurial accomplishments, but rather her scientific ones. Or, more to the point, I am not demeaning. I am merely extremely skeptical, which is the natural reaction to a story that sounds just too good to be true.

How does a sophomore know enough to solve a real-world problem? Even for a grad student, it is almost a miracle to be able to do work with serious real-world impact. Of course, grad students have to publish and are constrained by academia's straightjackets.

Prof. George Whitesides of Harvard, one of the most famous chemists in the world, has been working on paper-based low-cost diagnostics technology for several years, and his non-profit, Diagnostics for All, hasn't yet taken off, despite being funded by Bill Gates's foundation:

So, what does Ms. Holmes have that Prof. Whitesides does not? Is Ms. Holmes's father a partner at a venture capital firm, by any chance?

Props to Icarus for being the first to get a whiff of this rat way back when

Company officially dissolving. They attempted to sell this crap to 80 investors and no takers.

The conversations should be fun.

"So what are you offering?"
"We have some buildings, some real labs and a product that you can throw away instantly. Plus we have a name that everyone will run away from."
"So you have some buildings, laboratory equipment, an illusory fake product that is worthless and a bad rep?"

She would need to pay people to buy that company.

Also note how she shows up at a red-carpet-event not with her boyfriend, but with an age-appropriate more Chad man. (00:30)

The media is of course a bunch of moronic sycophants.

"The very concept is valuable."

Yeah fucktard - a flying car or a teleportation device would also be a great concept. Does not mean that I can sell my teleport-box as real.

Plus the technology that bloke refers to is based on spectro analysis - you require much less blood for that, but does not mean that it will even work on everything since the blood taken from the fingers is supposedly very different from the one taken from the veins - at least under certain criteria. Wonder how basic biology can bend to that?

A good starting point to plan a negotiation over anything is to determine the scrap value and work your way out from there.

You will note that Fortress Investments was the last investor in the door. This is significant as they are a true vulture capital fund. Fortress invests in stuff like this for the purpose of repossessing distressed assets (any potential technical IP) for resale value.

Do remember that it was Fortress Investments that Bank of America sold Michael Jackson's $300 million debt to sometime in the last decade (when he was still alive and technically bankrupt). Fortress investments fully intended on being the copyright owner of the entire Michael Jackson song collection at the time. I don't remember how Michael's death affected this outcome.

It is likely that Elizabeth Holmes was and is not even aware of Fortress Investment Group's attempt to buy the Michael Jackson and Beatles song collections via an expected Michael Jackson bankruptcy. Holmes is highly intelligent. But I suspect she may really be this clueless on the mechaniations of others.

I think she's just on the cusp of being pretty enough not to do that much time. With all the big names likely to get egg on their faces, I'm not sure she's going to go down as hard as her BF, who will likely take the fall and/or be the one that "manipulated" her in to it.

Amazing how good men are at manipulating women sometimes..........Especially when courts are involved.

She's toned down the glam makeup to try to look more pitiful and make it less obvious she sucked her way into this.

Also, this legal battle has probably taken ten years off her life. Then again, she's a clear psychopath.

I always liked the drive to Theranos. You could take some backroads that meandered through the hills which was a welcome change from the gridlock of all the nearby roads and highways of the Bay Area. There were some cool parks and trails around Stanford you could go hiking in after work and the weather was usually pretty good. The main headquarters in Palo Alto had a decent sized parking lot and there was always this vintage yellow convertible sports car from the 60s parked right in the front in the handicap spot. I think it was a corvette or a camaro. It was decked out in Marine Corps and Vietnam Vet number stickers. The guy that owned it was the front desk security guard- you didn’t get in the building without going through him. He was at this desk that was alone in the lobby. He had the rough man Clint Eastwood look and didn’t take nonsense from anyone. Then there was this big glass encasement that went up the stairs which he would unlock and regulate. He was really proud of his job. Even in his old age, he was super enthusiastic about regulating who could get in. He was over the top and neurotic about it. You had to have all these special clearances to get in, and if you weren’t on his list and your badge wasn’t activated you didn’t get in. I always figured he was hired by Elizabeth directly. And then as soon as you got inside you were surrounded by the biggest change with just a few footsteps- strange, antisocial engineers. I remember that the whole place just seemed “off” in some way.

That was a long time ago. I always wonder what happened to the guard and if his yellow sports car is still on the road.

Probably, unless he made the mistake of choosing to get paid in Theranos private stock.

He's probably in a shallow grave next to one of those hill roads, having been poisoned by Holmes and dumped there by one of her hapless beta orbiters.

Me thinks that Elizabeth Theraons has a few deep state benefactors on her side, and that is how she managed to climb so far. However, looking at her, she would just be an average looking nerdy chick who would be good enough for a one night stand.

Forbes came out with an article yesterday titled "4 Startling Insights Into Elizabeth Holmes From Psychiatrist Who's Known Her Since Childhood."

Besides the obvious (i.e. knowing a shrink since childhood), this article shows that Holmes had a serious case of over-involved helicopter parents. They apparently never let up on her and pushed her endlessly to succeed, even though she was a withdrawn kid and average student.

They found a "back door" way to get her into Stanford and used their contacts to introduce her to a venture capitalist. That move, of course, was the beginning of the end. Link to story here.

*****

Some food for thought.

This is the way parents used to treat boys back in the bad old days. They would ride little Billy about getting A's and being captain of every team until Billy blew a fuse and ended up on drugs, in jail, or in the looney bin. I knew kids like this. They were usually oldest boys and the parents ran their lives like drill sergeants. None of them ended up well.

Because of feminism, parents are now treating girls like this. "Get married; have kids" is apparently not on the agenda anymore for a lot of parents with daughters.

And what message does it send to girls that their parents don't value them as women, only as replicas of boys (i.e. the sons these parents apparently wanted but didn't get)?

The big irony? Holmes' folks did all of this in a quest for status. Looks like it backfired. Having your spawn become the biggest disgrace in the history of American business isn't the kind of thing you can brag about at the country club.

While nothing in that article really surprises me, and much of it confirms my view it's generational narcissism at work, I'd be careful about taking Richard Fuisz's word for it.

Bad Blood tells us that Fuisz was in fact a pretty grubby sort of man and more a claim jumper than a doctor. "CIA Agent" in particular is overblowing it; "CIA business contact and general scumbag who hung out in suspicious parts of the world dealing with scumbags with connections to regimes hostile to America" is more accurate on his bio. Indeed his own Wiki bio blithely states that he had a shitload of business contacts with Russia throughout the 1980s, i.e. when there really was a credible Russian espionage threat to the United States. You know, the sort of thing that rags like Forbes like to shriek about these days for some odd reason.

And most significantly, Fuisz first started a shitfight with Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos when he blocked one of Theranos's patents. He saw one of her early ideas for delivering pinprick blood results and immediately filed a patent on an element of the process, making it impossible for Holmes to build or develop the device without paying him shitloads of money by way of the patent he had. Eventually, after he was litigated into the ground, Fuisz kept looking for a way to get back at Holmes and Theranos - and the way he accomplised it was putting whistleblowers in contact with the man who broke the Theranos story and wrote Bad Blood, John Carreyou.

So what, that's America, and fair enough ... except you don't normally do that to people who have been your friends for years and who in fact are your next door neighbours. That was Fuisz's relationship to the Holmes family.

Which is not to say Elizabeth Holmes was any sort of saint, but Fuisz is a self-aggrandising prick, even down to how the Holmeses wound up living in his first home. If I remember Bad Blood right, Fuisz had to be browbeaten into letting the Holmeses stay in the house by Fuisz's own wife, who had a somewhat more compassionate side to her.
