I think winning a world cup will always topple any CL trophy in the heart of any player.
When you are a kid you dream of scoring the winner in world cup final. Not winning the CL.
A world cup is once every 4 years. Most good players play 3 world cups max.

I think it's ridiculous to say that a player needs to win a world cup to be the greatest ever.
Imagine if some superman type of player was from Iraq or something and scored 2000 career goals, had 1000 assists and basically made Pele look like a scrub.
Would that hypothetical player not be the best of all-time because Iraq didn't win a WC?
Now that situation is obviously hyperbole but it takes a team to win.

Belgium is a solid team...I am impressed by Panama, they held out to Belgium for one half.

The accolade that comes with winning for your country stands on it's own. The World Cup is the most watched sporting event in the world, and world leaders show up and praise their teams for great performances because it crosses boundaries into politics and current events.
Also to consider is that great players find ways to win when it counts the most. It's what makes them great because very often that requires doing something that no one else is capable of doing. Maradona's Hand of God for example, followed by his solo goal. We saw it again just a few nights ago when Ronaldo scored his free kick (and hat-trick) against Spain, once again carrying Portugal on his back. Winning a world cup even as a bench warmer wins you sponsorship, endorsements and paid appearance deals as well as upping your value as a player in general. Players like Mario Götze and Andres Iniesta receive standing ovations by rival fans in their domestic leagues whenever they're subbed in or out simply for scoring the single goal that won their country the World Cup. The Champions League just does not carry even a fraction of this influence.

Belgium was playing quite good - and the buggers kept on attacking even while leading 3:0. They may be good enough to win the tournament - the other highly classed teams are certainly far more lackluster.

Just to clarify rudeboy... I'm not doubting Maradona was amazing etc. I'm just saying, in my opinion, it's no longer a requirement to win a WC to be considered the best ever. Not when you've won all the other team/individual prizes and have the insane statistics that Ronaldo. and Messi have. You are right though, I am younger than you and didn't see Maradona play.
Tell that to Messi. He may be a hero in Barcelona and around the world, but when he shows up in Argentina he gets slaughtered by his countrymen for not delivering time after time for the national team.
Every little free kick he misses, every penalty he misses, every goal he almost makes is criticized to the teeth in his country when he plays for the national team because they see what he does in Barcelona. They always ask themselves, why can't he do that with the national team?
Here I'll translate this video I saw recently of a game he had during the qualifiers where the Argentinian commentator was slamming him for playing shitty.

Here comes Messi. Messi has it, he controls it.
Come, come, come....And he lost it.
You son of a bitch, in Barcelona he takes it to the house
Why can't he fucking doing it here?
Here comes the free kick, Leonel is going to bury it, Leonel is going to bury it.
He is going to put us in the world cup right here.
Come, come, come, hit it Leonel, hit it. He hits it.....And he misses.
Quit fucking cutting my balls!
Tell me its a lie Horacio! Tell me its a fucking lie Horacio!
You know what I'm going to say Horacio? The shirt (Argentina) is too big for him.
You can't kick a free kick that shitty Horacio! Without heart, without discipline, without direction, without potency!
Without fucking balls Horacio!
All those trophies, awards and accolades, champions leagues, with Barcelona, while impressive, don't mean shit until he wins the world cup for his country. That's how he will be judged, especially among his countrymen because they have 2 world cups won in their history. If he ends his career without winning the world cup, people in his country will say "Well, Maradona got us a world cup"

Savage ^^ and although the frustration is understandable, they're not making it any easier for Messi.
Also to consider is the law of momentum: Ronaldo is coming into the World Cup with two solid years of dominance - European Champ, 2x Champion League Titles & 2x Ballon d'Or winner. Messi is coming in with nothing.
So if I had to predict who will come out as the better of the two, it's looking really good for Ronaldo.
And based off of overall team performances thus far, I predict a Spain/Portugal final.

I bet on them ages ago. I'm a Man United fan, gotta love Ronnie.

England lol. Their team is as mediocre as it gets, with the exception of Kane.
They don't come close to 1/10th of the talent they had in their golden generation (1998-2006) and even then they won nothing.
Where does that put Canada then? ![[Image: lol.gif]](https://rooshvforum.network/images/smilies/new/lol.gif)
Canada sucks at football but that's fine, everyone in Canada knows and says it.
The English media overrates English football and their national team constantly and always claims that they are favourite to win the tournament even when they have shitty teams.
How is it fine? It's a huge country yet is consistently worse than teams like Jamaica, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama and pretty much everyone else in North/Central America and the Carribean and rarely even makes it to the second round of CONCACAF qualifying. Trinidad and Tobago are a much more accomplished football nation. They rarely even get to play teams like the US and Mexico in competitive games.
Why are Canada so bad at football? You can't say because they play other sports because the US plays other sports but still has an ok team. Any mediocre English player would be a superstar for Canada.

The Premier League is the most competitive of the major leagues (the Championship, or second division, in England is second). It's the league with the highest quality throughout the 20 teams.
