The Century of the Self

It's about the rise of the consumer culture, and the modern narcissistic identity, and the role that Freudian psychoanalysis played in all of it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyPzGUsYyKM

"To many in both business and government, the triumph of the self is the ultimate expression of democracy, where power is truly moved into the hands of the people. Certainly the people may feel they are in charge, but are they really? The Century of the Self by Adam Curtis tells the untold and controversial story of the growth of the mass-consumer society. How is the all-consuming self created, by whom, and in whose interest?

The Freud dynasty is at the heart of this compelling social history. Sigmund Freud, founder of psychoanalysis; Edward Bernays, who invented public relations; Anna Freud, Sigmund's devoted daughter; and present-day PR guru and Sigmund's great grandson, Matthew Freud. Sigmund Freud's work into the bubbling and murky world of the subconscious changed the world. By introducing a technique to probe the unconscious mind, Freud provided useful tools for understanding the secret desires of the masses. Unwittingly, his work served as the precursor to a world full of political spin doctors, marketing moguls, and society's belief that the pursuit of satisfaction and happiness is man's ultimate goal..."

Funny Doc. by English comic Dave Gorman doing a road trip across America to see if he could make it without using any Chain businesses.

Is Mom and Pop America still alive and kicking?

found some new one's:

http://www.vice.com/the-vice-guide-to-tr...-liberia-1
After watching this I never new how fucked up Liberia was. Children shooting coke, hookers, defecating on the beach, AIDS, corruption x1000, the people who shot this doc nearly got into to some shit while there it's worth a look.

Also one about North Korea seems tame compared to the one about Liberia :

Al Jazeera has done some really nice docs, especially about the global financial crisis and the top 1%.

Here's a comprehensive one they did about the global financial collapse called Meltdown (four-part series):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8dlqX9-v...re=related (part 1)

You can find parts 2-4 in the margins. The insights are truly groundbreaking. Shit you won't find on CNN.

This is one they did on the top 1% (25-min clip)

Other documentaries I like in general are:

The Ascent of Money by Niall Ferguson (epic):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Xx_5PuLIzc

The War on Democracy by John Pilger (fascinating glimpse into the history of American imperialism in Latin America):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtZcjt28Oxg

Though not really a documentary, this interview with the author of Confessions of an Economic Hitman is eye-opening. I actually know John Perkins and have met up with him twice in the Bay Area (see attached pic). He's got some wild stories:

If I think of any more, I'll revisit this thread and drop some links.

I recommend "The Thin Blue Line" by Errol Morris. A man was actually freed from Death Row after being convicted by a jury after this film was released to the public. Everything Errol Morris does is amazing but this is his masterpiece. Seriously, a life changing film.
