Russian Standard Vodka in California? Thoughts?
01-05-2012, 03:05 PM
I saw a show on the cat that makes Russian Standard Vodka. He's got mad dough and a real playboy.
So I tried the stuff in Miami Beach when I was last there last month as I don't think I saw it before in California.
I gave a bottle to one of my friends in Miami Beach, and he said, "Cool, I already have a huge bottle" and pulled out the big bottle from his kitchen.
This stuff seemed mad popular in Miami, and I asked biz partner, who is a heavy vodka drinker in CA if he had ever seen it and he said "no".
Has anyone seen this stuff in CA?
What are your thoughts on it?
How does it compare to Ketel, Goose, Belvedere? Taste?
Hangover factor?

I drank it a bit here in the Baltics. I find it on par with Absolut and Stoli.

It's a great mixer. On my last trip me and my buddy drank a 1.5L over the course of a few days and neither of us experienced any considerable hangover. It's also good on the rocks if that's your thing. I personally stay away from vodka unless I'm mixing it with something.
You can find the stuff all over in CA. I've seen it in BevMo and supermarkets. You can get a big bottle for about $25. For the price it's one hell of a vodka.
Another good vodka I've tried (found it at trader joes) is Volganaya. You can get a 1L bottle for about $12.

They even had Bison grass vodka (not as good as the stuff that used to come from Polish friends, but still good).
Zubrowka is one of my favourites.
Russian Standard is decent but not up there with the premium brands. I prefer Stoli.

If you're looking for the best deal in Vodka at the store, try Tito's Handmade Vodka from Austin, TX. 2/3 the price of Belvedere and it tastes better.
I doubt that you will ever find it in the clubs, though. They pay absolutely nothing on marketing and packaging - all of your money goes into the vodka. It comes in 1 1/2 L jug with a label that looks like it was printed on someone's home ink jet.
