Hey Loz, great thread! I've been wanting to purchase a box but the sunbox ships to Australia for $330+ which is quite high for me. Along with the Redstone no sellers ship to Aus either. Do you have any recommendations suitable for Aus, cheers!

JayD, I think your best bet for something cheaper that ships to Australia is to look around on eBay. For example, I found this one:

http://picclick.com.au/Carex-Day-Light-C...73946.html

Ebay mirror link:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/282149773946?rmvSB=true

Seems like a great deal: just AUD 157 including shipping to Australia, and item is listed as brand new unopened out of the box. And it's a legitimate full spectrum 10,000 Lux lightbox (the Carex Day-Light). I can't vouch for the seller but looks good to me. It's shipping from the US so you may also need to get an AC adapter plug (those are cheap) but otherwise you should be good to go.

LoZ,

Would you recommend using this year round in places with 4 seasons, including summer? I've found that I get plenty of sunlight due to the days being longer. The light box is a necessity for me in the fall, winter and spring. Should this be a year long practice?

David took his men with him and went out and killed two hundred Philistines and brought back their foreskins. They counted out the full number to the king so that David might become the king's son-in-law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal in marriage. 1 Samuel 18:27

Well, if you wanted to take a season off from using the light box, it would definitely be the summer, especially if you're outdoors a lot in the morning. But there's certainly no problem with using it all year round, including the summer. If you already have a light box, and if you use correctly -- as in, every single morning at around the same time, shortly after you wake up -- for 9 months a year, you might as well just keep going all year round.

Keep in mind that even if you get plenty of sunlight during the summer months, you are probably not getting it at the exact same time every morning. So while the sunlight you get outdoors during the summer may well be more than sufficient for your mood and energy levels, it's hard to beat absolutely consistent usage of the light box for maintaining a regular sleeping schedule. And since there is really no downside to using the light box -- it's not as if you can get too much light (in the morning hours), and the UV spectrum is filtered out -- there is no reason not to stick to it and make it an absolutely automatic habit every single day of the year.

Bright Light Therapy for Regularizing Sleep and Reducing Depression and Anxiety

Hey all,

I just wanted to chime in about how I've found a lot of value out of my bright light therapy box.

I started regularly using my box in around April 2016. I use it Monday through Friday for 20 minutes while writing in my journal. I get up at 5am every weekday. After waking up (to an alarm), I down some water + lemon + apple cider vinegar, then make a double espresso + cinnamon + coconut oil. Then I lie down and write in my journal with the bright light therapy box beaming onto my face.

Since I started using it, I've regularized and deepened my sleep. I get up at 5am each weekday (to an alarm), or sometime before. Sometimes I don't sleep a full eight hours, but even so I feel well-rested. I sleep every weeknight night at about 9pm, or even a bit before. I credit this success to the box, and also a lack of Internet at my house. My phone doesn't have data either. The idea of coming home to an Internet-free house might be incredible to some, but it has definitely improved the quality of my sleep and overall discipline and physical and mental health.

I also sleep on the floor Sunday through Friday, mostly because of lower back issues. Sleeping on the floor is great. For me, there's no going back to sleeping on a mattress/bed.

The older I get, the more of a caveman I become.

I use the box for only 20 minutes (not the full 30 minutes) due to time reasons. I dont' want to wake up any earlier than 5am, and time is tight in the morning, so 20 minutes is about what I can spend in front of a bright light therapy box while still making it to yoga class at 7am.

Yeti, thank you for the posts. I'm extremely happy to hear that regular light box usage has allowed you to regularize and deepen your sleep -- few things have such a disproportionate effect on overall health and quality of life. To a very good approximation, if you are getting a deep and restful sleep almost every night, you live a healthy and happy life; otherwise, you do not. It's really pretty much that simple.

Regarding time of use of the light box. There are good reasons to believe that 30 minutes is close to optimal; but 20 minutes is probably sufficient, if not quite optimal. One should really not go below 20 minutes, and I think 30 minutes is best, all in all; but if you're really pressed for time, a 20 minutes light box is acceptable and will provide most of the benefits.

If I could recommend one change in your otherwise excellent routine, it would be this: drop the empty stomach double espresso. It's very hard to tell this to anyone since there are few things that the human being loves more than its empty stomach morning coffee (unless you're really old school and it's an empty stomach morning coffee accompanied by a cigarette; that is essentially heaven for the normal human brain). But it's very rough on your gut, and consequently your brain, over time (and no, the presence of a few drops of ACV or lemon or coconut oil does not really alter the designation of this double espresso as "empty stomach"). Get some food in your belly, and have your morning coffee 15-30 minutes after your first food intake -- that will be enough to protect your gut and your brain, which will duly thank you for that sacrifice (which I cannot in good conscience call a small one, but which is certainly a doable one) over time.

Just bought this bad boy. Thinking of teaming it up with a power socket timer so I use it as my morning alarm too (not sure what peoples thoughts are about that).

As with others I'm not sure I can manage 30 minutes but will shoot for 20+ at the same time every morning.

I bought a Lumie Arabica on eBay for £20. I used it for 2-3 weeks before falling away due to irregular working hours, however during that time I started to wake up at the same time every day - 5:30am.

I've now had a 9-5 job for some time and I'm about to implement a morning routine into my life again. However I train before going to work in the morning so I'm usually pushed for time. I would like to incorporate daily light box use and meditation into my routine (30 mins each) but I don't have time for both.

Does anybody have any experience of meditating whilst using their light box? It has crossed my mind to try both at once as I meditate with my eyes open, however I'm not sure if I'll get the full benefit of the meditation. I'll give it a go but has anyone else tried this?

I know the other option is to get up earlier but I'd like to avoid this as I already get up at 5:30 and I don't want to have to go to bed any earlier at night.

Lightbox should combine well with meditation. Will support relaxed, alert, awake concentration.

I just recently purchased a light for my relative from http://www.sunbox.com and it arrived broken. Then another light was sent and again that light was also broken. So Im at waiting several weeks for them to get a working light.

I would also like to buy a light but Im in China and after all the BS from this light I don't want to buy one and have it broken, then wait another several weeks for the next light to come and have that be broken.

Has this kind of inferior quality happened with other people's orders?

Update: Sunbox asked for the lights bulbs and the light to be sent back and they are going to send another light. Good thing is that all this shipping back and forth is being paid by them after the first UPS shipping fee, which was something like $25 which I thought was very high for something that takes a week and only weights 2-3lbs.

If this next light is broken Im going to try someone else.

Also: My friend is a grower of marijuana in one of the medical ganga states so I asked him about these lights since he is an expert in all kinds of indoor lighting. He said they are very cheap and the profit on a $200 light was probably in the $150 range. Maybe this is why their quality control is so low, they just don't give a shit if every light is bringing in $150 profit. If most work, great, otherwise who cares. Just a guess.

I use a Lumie lamp.
Absolutely excellent. And essential for me in the winter months.
Gives me an extra 2, 3 maybe 4 hrs of feeling/being awake.
And enhances my sharpness and exercise ability hugely.

People might scratch their head. But give one just a week, and SAD sufferers will experience a huge difference.

After another poor nights sleep and waking at 3am again for no good reason I'm finally going to try this.

Just ordered the Lumie Brazil off their website - not cheap at £150 but has a 45 day free return/trial period so it's worth a go.

Will post an update, good or bad, in a week or so!

I'm in Ukraine and the overcast winter skies and short hours is contributing to a terrible sleep cycle and overall winter malaise.

I need a light box asap.

Any tips on how to get one of these things in Ukraine are welcome.

Tenerife, both the Sunlight Jr. from Sunbox and the Lumie Brazil from Lumie can be shipped to Ukraine. The Lumie Brazil may be a better deal for you because it ships from the UK, but you should find out the full price with shipping for both and get one of them as soon as possible. If you use it correctly and consistently it will obliterate your winter malaise and sleep dysregulation, and there is no way to put a price tag on that.

ball dont lie, what specific product did you get from Sunbox?

I know many people who have bought either the Sunlight Jr. or the SunRay 2 (quite a few on my recommendation), and I have yet to hear about anyone having a bad experience with either of those light boxes. They seem to be invariably well-built, reliable, and long lasting. Did you buy one of those light boxes, or something else?

It was the Sunsation with the large stand. It seemed like it would work best in that person's situation since they always sit on the couch and drink coffee in the morning, not going to change an old dog. So I found the one where a good stand could set it up next to the side of the couch.

The 3rd one worked fine and so far they said it worked well. Has had a good effect and they are starting to wake up earlier. My relative often wakes up late and sleeps late so this is a big change for them. It seems to function as suggested and it worked after a couple weeks of use.

I would also like to order a Sunsation mainly because its light and shipping to China from the USA is expensive.

I've not been consistent enough with using it every day/same time so far, so can't say I've noticed much of a difference.

Am on track to using it every day this week though, 30 mins at 7.30am - will post an review up after the weekend.

Lizard of Oz, do you use Zinc or anything else to aid sleep as well as a lightbox? (Currently taking ZMA.)
