White House spokesman, Josh Earnest, told reporters in a briefing that if there is such a video, it would be analysed very carefully, adding that the administration's thoughts and prayers were with Sotloff's family.

David Cameron has said: "I've just seen the news. It's an absolutely disgusting and despicable act and I will be making a statement later."

A masked figure in the video also issued a threat against a British hostage.

The White House said that it had yet to authenticate the footage, which SITE said showed 31-year-old freelance writer Steven Sotloff on his knees beside an IS fighter with a knife.

The video warns governments to back off "this evil alliance of America against the Islamic State".

Sotloff, 31, disappeared while reporting in Syria in August 2013. His apparent kidnap was not widely reported until he appeared on a video released last month by the Isil.

My guess is that he refused to say traitor like shit unlike Foley, so they made their own speech and killed him afterwards. Again they fade to black once the knife comes out and the quality kinda sucks because you can barely see a head sitting on a body. It's not HD like Foley's video.

When Kosko mentioned the lack of feces etc. and some of the other medical stuff, it made it alot of sense. The quality on this video is too shitty to see stuff like that this time. Scorpion's points on false flag potential have 100 times more credibility than any information coming out of the Obama Administration. I do not know if that is true or not, but in Foley's case it was as evidenced by his final speech. Has anyone seen this video? This is a video of Sotloffs mother pleading for her sons release. If you can call it that. I don't want this to come across as disrespectful towards Sotloff or his mother, but this an observation. This video IS scripted. Her eyes are twitching as she reads back and forth from a prompter. She sighs and sounds bothered to be speaking.

I find the video just absolutely bizarre. She is completely void of any emotion. I realize she may be traumatized and doped up on meds. Or the Botox injections have made her incapable of doing so.

Now I'm no parent, let alone a parent whose son is being held hostage. But I would think you don't need to read from a script when highlighting what a good loving boy you brought into this world and how much you want him back. He's your flesh and blood for gods sake.

It's not that unusual if you've ever been around showbiz parents. These people probably thought that their son(s) would break into hollywood or something. That woman is in shock, she's been dealing with her son held in captivity for over a year and then finally learns of his fate. Could anyone maintain their composure in that situation without reading a script? Her language was obviously deliberate and strategic in order to maximize appeal - when begging for your sons life, hysteria wouldn't be the best option.
