Pimping out the crib

Hi guys,

I currently reside in a bachelor apartment (studio apartment for fellow brits). I would like to jazz it up a bit because I feel I've lost a few lizards due to the basic layout of it. However, I don't like to spend too much money on accessories and stuff. One friend was suggesting I get a flat screen tv. I currently have a CRT that was given to me (as you can guess, I am not a big tv watcher).
I have a futon in the living room that opens up into a bed if the reptile acts right.
I own a laptop since I work in IT but I was thinking of possibly getting a desktop and perhaps a desk to go with it.
I'd like some economic suggestions in terms of ideas. Ways of hooking up the bathroom, living area and kitchen.

Bear in mind, I live in Canada so you know I am limited in terms of the sort of stuff I can buy and also cost.

I don't want to bulk down my place too much as I like to be mobile if need be.

So in summary, pimp-ish ideas for a bachelor pad..on a budget.

Thanks.

You're lucky because minimal is in. Flip through Dwell, Real Simple, or any other number of magazines on the subject of interiors/furnishings. These will give you tons of ideas.

Mid-century modern furniture can be had for reasonable prices at used furniture stores, and is always re-sellable.

A great cheap way to cover bare walls is to buy a couple of canvas frames at an art store and wrap them with some cool fabrics and hang them like pictures. I did this with some zebra-stripe fabric, and a couple of tall, skinny frames. Put them side-by-side. It looks pretty pimp.

I'm not a fan of Ikea furniture, but it's a great place for accessories. Especially light fixtures. You can get pretty cool, modern-looking, halogen bulb lamps that you can place just about anywhere. This gives you control on the spatial lighting, and you can play around with it till you find something that works. Changing the lighting of a space can change the entire feel.

Here you are allowed to paint the walls any color you want. I have camel colored walls thought the apartment with a red wall in the kitchen. All of my decorations are kind of earthy and beachy. Look into getting some nice drapes. You say you have a futon, those are cool. You can buy a coffee table, a floor rug, to go under it. I've got some dope artwork on the walls. If you smoke I'd display your bong. I have some nice shower towels as well. I keep my toaster shiny.

Depends on what you image/character you're trying to tell people you are.

My current set up sucks cause i'm in a spot temporarily.

My last spot
- walk in/foyer - place for your keys and shoes - shows organization
- kitchen - no dirty dishes in the sink, the dishes you have match, counter clean, fresh fruit and veggies, stocked fridge, got appetizers whore-derves in the freezer, blender for mixed drinks and smoothies.
- living area - couch, coffee table, book shelf, flat screen, dvd player, maybe a game system, but that turns off a lotta chicks
- bathroom - extra clean, lots of toilet paper, contact lens solution
- bedroom - clean, bed made,

In my opinion, you gotta do 2 things with your place
1) fill it with "items of interest". Just like Roosh talks about weaving bait into your conversations during day game, you need things in your apartment that convey your personality and your cool interests.
- art work
- pictures of you doing cool stuff
- interesting books
- i usually had cosmo, glamour, economist and other stuff on my coffee table.
- guitar is a good one, I had TT's in my living room (used to dj)
- boxing gloves somebody on the forum mentioned
- pets (although, I prefer pictures of me with pets/animals, cause you gotta take care of cats and dogs)
- TV and DVD player - you need to be able to pull a broad home for a cooked meal and a movie, cause it's like the easiest way to close on a 3rd date.
- incense
- a full length mirror

2) promotes fucking
- some guys don't have a couch, only a bed, only place for her to sit
- tv in bedrroom for movies/porn in bed
- stashed condoms
- easily accessible alcohol, weed, what ever you're into

@westindianArchie - I like the idea, you've got me thinking. I should print out some of my pictures although I don't snap a lot of my shots, I should and then frame some of it.

Boxing gloves, I got a pair of 16oz in the cupboard, I should bring those out and hang them somewhere. Lizards love the aspect of danger, if they see shyt like boxing gloves, they envision a rough guy which establishes DHV.

I got the bookcase already with my book collection, it usually peeks the interest of the book minded reptiles.

I am thinking I should post a pic of my bathroom and the main room in my crib..[Image: confused.gif]

1) Frame your photos; inexpensive and nothing beats your own stuff as conversation where you can adjust/fabricate DHV stories about a picture based on the woman's personality
2) Art; Just shows taste; my homeboy is an up n' coming modern artist so he lends me pictures- I have an awesome $5,000 8 foot by 4 foot Rothko-lookin' piece up. It will stay until his gallery show and if it sells I'll get another. If you know artists then ask them- usually they are flattered plus they're always running out of storage space for their own work which is always stacked up in a corner somewhere
3) Panini-maker;easy, looks cool, functional, makes any sandwich taste waay better for your gal (jam some crappy arugula into any panini sandwich and you're interesting)
4) Any travel crap that can set off your Carribean/Italy stories, etc

lol Archie's Economist lying around

I have huge problems with this as well at my house. There's a wall I put up to separate my living room which without it was about 1000sq ft with vaulted ceilings. I wanted to hook up the smaller living room but don't know what to do so I'm thinking about tearing the wall down and turning into a bar type setting with video games, pool table and a real bar. I don't sit on the couch ever but will sit at a table or barstool.

Lame idea?

Great idea. Don't forget a dart board.

You might as well go all out and add a few subwoofers, speakers, and a mini fridge.

My approach:

I just decided the other day to put 90% of my stuff either in the cellar or into a rented self-storage locker. I want to live super-minimal, like DeNiro's character in the movie "Heat". Just bed, couch, one or two books I'm currently reading, computer and drinks. Still thinking about the details, but I'm done with having so much stuff around all the time. There's no point.

Moma:

You are right, women do judge a ton on a guys place. I have worked with Interior Designers (all women) and I took some personal advice from them.

A bachelor pad is perfect as it is less to coordinate. Coordination is the key.

- Have a "theme". Sounds gay, but it can be as simple as a colour. I don't know if you can sew, but if you can things such as pillows, curtains, blanket cover should have some sort of consistency. You have boxing gloves, pull a colour off that for example.

- A bachelor pad can get cluttered FAST. Make sure that things that are not used often, get hidden away in some sort of uniform box, or else in a storage place. This is probably the most important part. Making sure you have a place for everything, and that nothing seems to just be piled anywhere. Piles of random shit are focal points and draw the eye away from where you want it to go.

This leads to a:

- Focal point. Most people use TVs. You dont watch TV, and neither do I. So I use a large plant and a large painting (the painting has colours that match the colours of the pillows on my couch.
- I create some ambient (not hard) light in this focal point. This makes the place feel comfortable, and people will naturally be drawn there.

I recommend using mostly ambient lighting when you have people over. It creates shadow low down and makes a room feel larger and more comfortable. It is also flattering.

Someone mentioned painting your walls. Be careful with this, if you have not done it before. A good matte white is often the safest if you are not confident. If you have a good eye for colour palette (I dont) painting your wall is a great way to give a space some life. If you don't know what you are doing, ask some people. A consultation can be had for not too much money.

If you decide to go the desktop computer/ office be very aware of the state of this area. Many times this can be the most offensive area in a home. I work from home and my office can get pretty messy when i am putting in long hours. Set aside clean up days for the office area, just as you would do as an employee.

Ikea does not get a lot of love but I think that it has gems if you know what to look for. For example, try and buy only their quality stuff. The price is usually the same. Do not get sucked into their "sleek, modern" stuff. Stick to the classics that are made from solid birch (not pressed board). I am a bit of a furniture guy, and I found some polycarbonate bar stools from Ikea for under $100. Polycarbonate is what fighter jet windshields are made from. This shit is indestructible and I would have paid over $500 from other places. Plus they are white, and black and white furniture can be kept for longer.

If you want to know anything in particular let me know and I can see if I can help.

Lanier - I will have to mull this over. I am liking the plant idea, I might try and grab something that doesn't attract unsavoury insects (I am a total noob on plants).

I have a big issue with storage. I have some shyt cluttered over the place (which I sadly need) and I have lost the deal with a few lizards over that.

I tried to keep the place in dark when I brought one lizard over last year and she kept asking for the light to get turned on. I told her I was saving electricity (even though I live in an all inclusive unit).

She didn't buy it and even though I got my fingers in her pie, she began playing the "I'm busy this weekend' role. I attribute this to the crib setup since she was blowing up my phone to link up prior.

When I got back from my trip, I felt like burning all my shyt except my passports. I don't plan to stay at my joint too long and I HATE the packing process to MOVING which is why I have a mental block on buying shyt to stoke in the joint.

I might need to holla at my auntie to cast her feminine eye on my joint. Once I get the basic foundation in place, then I can layer the top with pimp-ish stuff.

I'm still contemplating taking some snaps and uploading them.

A cool bachelor pad

This is a good example of what I mean by a theme.

I am pretty sure this is a bachelors place, and apart from the colour palette, it is vary similar to my place. Floor to ceiling windows are my "natural" focal point where everyone wants to look out of, so I maximize this.

Notice he has all ambient lighting. This is not dark, but very sexy. If a woman asks you about turning some lights on because she cant find the toilet, its too dark. Add some more lighting.

Also notice his focal point. Just let you eye wander to where it wants to go (not the bar, hah). And now try and figure out where a lizard is going to want to sit. Not too hard. This is where you should concentrate your effort.

I just checked to see if you had a Nood.ca in TO. You don't but I can highly recommend some of their stuff. Call them and see about shipping to TO.

I bought this couch a couple years back and I was pretty sure it was delivered out of Montreal. Its pimp. I am 6'2" and I can stretch out on it fully and spoon a lizard.

I was going to recommend that you head into the store with some pics of your pad and find a well dressed older (in his thirties) man (hopefully gay) and give him the lowdown on your pad.

Have a battle plan that way when you see something on your list, you can grab it. A cool pad takes a while.

i don't have a huge plasma screen tv and luxurious furniture in my apartment, but i have this huge mural (rasterbation) on my apartment living room wall that seems to make my place look more interesting than it actually is.

here's some examples of this shit.

looks dope as shit if you blow up a cool picture and put that shit up on your walls correctly.
this is the image i blew up. it's about 11 sheets of paper in length and 7 sheets of paper in height.

This is a great idea. A few questions:

What kind of paper did you use? Just regular printer paper? Seems like pieces of paper stuck to a wall look kinda cheap.

What did you use to stick the pieces to the wall?

Did you go to printer to have the pic printed, or is the resolution you get from a home printer good enough?

^ i used good ol' invisible scotch tape with printer paper. it came out fine. as long as you put it on your while cleanly without any air bubbles or wrinkles it'll look dope. it's tedious work but it's worth it.

i didn't use a home printer as it would've just wasted too much ink and would've taken way too long. lucky for me i'm still in school and just went to the campus library and printed everything out there.

anyways... i made a shelving unit for lounge/computer room. bout to fill these things up with all of my books and photography equipment. but this is just a start...

My place doesn't have any overhead lighting in the ceiling. Each room has one outlet that is controlled by a light switch.
I just use floor lamps and I replaced the light switches with switches with a built in dimmer. Works well.

Next thing I want to do is install wireless controlled dimmers. You can control them and your AV Equipment from an iPhone app.
If you program it right you can hit one button and the lights dim to a preset level, music comes on to a specified playlist. Shit's Dope.

These are some basic $7 ones I bought at Lowes.

Probably like $150 each. But you'll need a control processor, lighting gateway(router) and you'll need to be somewhat of a techie nerd to program and set them up. It's what I do for a living so I love all this shit.
