Lost passport/wallet/money- how to plan

The next time that you replace your wallet, keep the old one. Keep your old expired credit cards too. When you travel abroad, keep the old wallet, the expired credit cards, and a few bucks in the most obvious place. If you get mugged, just turn over the fake wallet and expired credit cards. They will just grab it and run. Moreover, if you get hit by a pickpocket, they will grab the fake wallet. Keep your real wallet in a more secure place on your person.

This right here... Everyone should do this.

great advice and often overlooked. (likewise scanning stuff)

I always travel with a really cheap wallet full of “debris”. Expired cards, general junk, a little bit of cash.

I’d be happy for a mugger to have it. Anyone can steal it. I’d never lose it in a supermarket or bar because I’d never take it out of my pocket...If I did It’s essentially worthless.

This year I found the following way of carrying plastic without risk:

I carry a “no name” Visa with me as a primary source of funds. It has a regular number, and works in regular ATM machines, but doesn’t carry my name on the card.

I fund it via a wire from my regular account (all done online). It has no overdraft so I won’t get screwed if it gets stolen.

It’s essentially like a grown up version of one of those “Gift Cards” you get in malls I think?(I’m not from the U.S.A. I’m U.K. based)

Unlike a gift card, you can load it with a heap of cash every month (Actually unlimited!) and the withdrawals can be large too....ATM: $2,000 USD per day or max of 5 ATM transactions; Point of Sale: $25,000 USD per day or max of 5 POS transactions.

Not that I’m in the lifestyle to roll like that!

In theory you don’t have to report it for tax either... Use your imagination!

I got into this stuff after just under a year of research into PT lifestyle and Sovereign Man membership...I see G-Manifesto has posted about him before.

Changing the subject: (I’m not a crackpot conspiracy guy, I just enjoy reading about tech!) On the RFID thing... Your best bet is actually tin foil... The RFID sleeves can “leak”. At best do your research before you buy. Saying that, I wouldn’t especially want to cross a border and be seen unwrapping a foil package.....

The really paranoid types pop it in a microwave (5 seconds or it’ll catch fire!). You can also slice the electrical connection with a surgical blade. Believe it or not, the best way is to cover the chip with a thin cloth and then smash the shit out of it with a heavy hammer.

It isn’t detectable but generally kills the chip and tracking info whilst easily being attributed to an accident (it shouldn’t leave a mark if you do it properly).

Just to confirm: I do talk to girls and don’t sleep in a weird tinfoil hat!

Just a quick addition on RFID:

I don’t generally see it as a problem, and I don’t generally give a shit in the grand scheme of having a good time in a foreign country,

BUT imagine this scenario: Euro 2012 soccer in Ukraine. Loads of tourists in a short time frame, all a bit un-travelled and naive. Combine this with a well educated but broke population and it’s easy to see it’s going to be a scam fest.

Just have a quick Google on how many high end programming houses and developers use Ukraine for cheap but very qualified/intelligent labour. Plus they’re all broke.

Electronic scamming will only increase in the future...Best to read up I guess.

To block RFID I roll with this:
http://pacsafe.com/www/index.html?_room=3...ail&id=150

To ensure I can get a new passport in record time if lost, I got a passport card, which is essentially the same as the paper version but only good for Canada/Mexico travel:

Love those PrePaid cards BTW. You can transfer funds to them online (takes 2-3 days to process) or call your bank and get them on their instantly. Can also check you balance and transactions online as well.

Agreed: Pacsafe has some decent products... They also have that slash proof bag thing too....

More data on the Pre-Paid:

(Anon pre-paid that is)

“Q-wealth report” website... join up, good financial and PT data... they’ll hook you up with a card. VERY pricey. Like hundreds of Euros for the hook up. Various others that offer services like this. (Q-Wealth are legit though)

They all charge a fortune in fees.... Lots of PT places offer services. All a bit pricey, all a bit dubious. “Sovereign Gold Card” are supposed to O.K. They get a bad rep for shitty service but are a legit company. Ignore where they are incorporated etc. Also ignore the 1998 website template...Not cool but, hey they’re still in business. An old school option is “The Freebooter”. Very old PT newsletter offering all sorts of services....

If you want something more solid (but WAY less anonymous... You're into the realm of standard holiday cards etc.) hit up “swissmicsi”

I spend a fair bit of time in Cyprus (back again in March). A female friend of mine wants to set up a shop there...

If you check out FBME bank Nicosia, you’ll find it has a branch in Tanzania, which is of interest due to the fact that it’s one of a VERY small amount of countries that don’t comply to international banking regulations on tax reporting. Cyprus is full of Russian money (and chicks from what I’ve seen).....

FBME is a very stable and well funded bank despite Cyprus being downgraded on credit rating.

They offer a range of pre-paid cards... The more I’ve researched it the more I come to think they all come from around this area/set of businesses.

Do your research, shit changes all the time. Pick the right source and you end up with a piece of plastic that holds virtually unlimited funds, has no name printed on it, and allows very healthy withdrawals....

You can't fly international with the passport card. It's only good for land-crossings and seaports for Canada, Mex, and Caribbean.

So basically you're just getting this as a back-up form of ID in case you lose your regular passport?

Is this really that advantageous over a state-issued drivers license?

I already explained that in post 5.
