Is it better to have a noticeably good body or rather be just well groomed like the guy's from mad men?

Well both are important. But I think if you have an average body and good clothes you'll stand out more than a guy with a great body and shabby clothes (unless you're at the beach). End of the day it's about your confidence and how you hold yourself.

Both work; I'd go with darkhorse's theme that you'll probably stand out being better groomed, all other things being equal. But--and this is an important but--if you've worked to have a good body that may give you a lot more confidence and poise than just throwing on nicer clothes and getting a haircut. It certainly made more of a difference in my case.

Joker,
I don't think it's an either or to be quite honest. Improving your body, and your grooming is something that you should do in tandem with each other. If you're in good shape, but really have no idea how to dress than by all means focus on grooming, but if it's the other way around then focus on getting in shape.
If you suck at both, then focus on both.

This is like a fat girl asking if she should lose weight or start wearing makeup.

If you don't want to invest time and effort in going to the gym at least make sure you're slim. Looking fat = looking neglected, not good.

IMO: Being in shape is important, but really only to the extent that you look good in clothing, because that's how you are viewed 99% of the time.
I don't get hung up on body fat percentages and ab definition, I just want to look good in what I'm wearing.
Of course, if I lived in Miami or something and spent a lot of time at the beach, it'd be a different story.
