What's your best and worst hostel experience?

Here's a great one (great one being one of my worst experiences). OK, I'm in New Orleans for the jazzfest (1st after katrina).... anyways, spent a little money, got a nice boutique place down on Tchapatoulous not far from mother's, the W and the casino. Took a girl, had a blast, 4 nights of music, food, drinks, great sex, the whole nine yards.... On the last morning, we were gathering our things together and making a cup of coffee in the hotel room coffee maker... when lo and behold, we find a rusty razor blade in the plastic part where you stick the coffee to brew it..... and this was our 4th morning making coffee.

After throwing up, I got half the bill slashed as the girl behind the desk was so mortified that she almost threw up as well.

Still alive... knock on wood.

Hostels can be very pleasurable to stay at if they are clean... Extremo del Sur in Buenos Aires comes to mind.

Bratislava.

It was my first night there. I had no idea where I was really, because I just found the cheapest flight to some place close to Prague.

I get there the first night with no place to stay, so I find whatever was available.

I check in, go to bed, and am woken up by 4 australian dudes who brought some girls over to fuck. 2 of the four dudes were fucking their chicks, and i was on a bunk bed above one of them trying to cloud my mind so i wouldn't have to listen to their farts and fucking. My bunk bed would move and rattle and bleh.

It was disgusting. While they were fucking they would talk to their friends, and the other friends would fart and burp. That shit was nasty.

Worst:

This "hotel" in northern Ethiopia (Mekele). I walk into my room and the bed is unmade and I walk over to it and inspect it. I see little mites crawling all over the bed and PUBES on the pillow case. I thought I saw a white crispy stain on the sheets. [Image: huh.gif]

The room literally smelled like shit and I checked out the bathroom and the toilet had overflowed from some dude clogging the shitter with a massive turd that was now on the bathroom floor.

I had to laugh, because when I went to get a different room, they couldn't understand why I wanted another room! Ahhh. Good times...

I'm surprised you stayed there.

Once a hostel wanted to put a wristband on me for the entire stay. I refused and went to another hostel across the street

Didn't really have a choice. The hotel is where my boss put all of us up at. And this was considered a NICE place. Northern Ethiopia brother. Not much there.

What's your best and worst hostel experience?

This is an old thread, but I like hearing about funny hostel stories. We all have them. One of my worst hostel experiences:

Worst:

1. In Cork, Ireland. I forgot the name of the hostel that I stayed at. It was an 6 bedroom dorm I believe. The hostel itself was really big though and to get to it you had to walk up a big ass hill. Anyways, in my room there was me, three Frenchmen and a couple other people (either two or four more people, I can't remember the specifics).

The three Frenchmen smelled horrible. The worst body odor that I've ever smelt in my life. They would spray a deodorant similar to ax body spray, might have been ax body spray for all I know to try to mask there musk. Unfortunately, it just made it worse. The smelled so bad that it was cold outside, but the other roomates who were in the room opened the windows to try to air out the room.

I noticed the day before I was supposed to leave, I had bumps over my chest and stomach area. They itched and they hurt like a mother fucker. I was a little embarrassed but concerned at the same time. I researched the internet and asked around the hostel what they thought, before I came to the conclusion that it must be bedbugs. Those nasty Frenchmen gave me bedbugs, it had to have been them. Washed EVERYTHING that I had when I got to the hostel in Dublin after leaving Cork and through away everything that wasn't washable in a trashcan somewhere outside the hostel in Dublin (with the exception of electronics). Washed everything on the highest fucking temperature possible two times. It worked and I got rid of the bed bugs. Or they left me to go to someone else I'm not sure.

2. I was on an island in Ischia Italy. I was there to "take a break" from traveling as I had been traveling for several months at that point visiting big cities in Europe. I stayed at what was labeled a hostel, but it was really a hotel. Only the owner put me in a room with an Aussie couple - which meant that I had the couch to sleep on as they had been there first. I didn't mind sleeping on the couch because the Aussies were really cool. The hotel had a little kitchen in it, but I noticed that the refrigerator wasn't turned on. I asked my roomates why and they said that the owner said it was broken. I plugged in the refrigerator and the plug to the gas powered stove, and sure enough it turned out. This wouldn't have been a problem only they advertised on the website that they had a kitchen.

I went and got groceries at the supermarket, came back and the owner told me that the refrigerator and the stove didn't work. I told him it did, that the only thing wrong was it was that it was unplugged. He got pissed because this place had a restaurant too. This means that I cut into his money that he would normally get from his restaurant. Anyway, the guy was pissed and basically gave me a hard time the whole time that I was there. Had some cool stories from that island though.

I never had any of the horror stories that you hear about with hostels, with the exception of getting bedbugs which I wouldn't wish on my worse enemy.

Good experiences:

Really just anytime when you meet a really good group of people. It's the people that you meet in the hostels that make or break it (as long as the hostel is in decent shape with regards to cleaning). For me it's a really easy place to meet new people and especially to meet new girls. After traveling for an extended time last year, when I'm in a hostel that's the easiest time I have making conversations and meeting girls.

I will say that the ratings on hostelworld or hostelbookers are really good at giving you an indicator whether or not you will have a good or bad experience at the hostel. Whenever I stay in hostels, I always spend a little extra money if it means I'm staying in a cleaner, better hostel.

Was in one in Budapest. Disgusting place. This was back in the day. Day of departure and I'm a bit frustrated from the last night's strikeout at the club. This was back when people actually looked at porno mags. I had one and decided to rub one out on the bed sheets before taking a shower and leaving. Spread out the porn on the bed, rubbed it out, and didn't even bother to clean up the jizz. Go to take a shower in the disgusting bathroom. Next thing you know this old Hungarian lady who was the "landlord" is busting in the room speaking Hungarian and the only English I understand is "you must go...you must leave now....". Then I hear more voices...in English...what sounds like a couple. Turns out she is coming in the room with them to leave their bags while they go sightsee and she cleans. Then it hits me...DON'T GO IN THE ROOM....OH NOOOOO! I grab a towel and try to make it back to the bedroom, but it's too late as I'm standing there dripping looking at this middle age couple staring at the jizz stains on their future bed, the porn mag, and the Hungarian lady screaming. Um...CHECK PLEASE!!!!!

Best?

Easily the nicest hostel on the entire planet - TOC Hostel in Seville, Spain

It's basically a 5 star hotel but with hostel prices.

http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/spa...le/107695/

Not only the cleanest hostel I have ever seen in my life but marble bathrooms, huge lockers, fast wifi and a great car / bar / restaurant on ground floor and fingerprint scan entry on the rooms so you dont even need a key.

Also about 20 seconds walk from the main Cathedral but without the resulting pedestrain traffic hassle (its tucked down a little side alley).

Worst?

Stayed in a hostel in Wroclaw, Poland once where they actually let a homeless guy check in who reeked of piss so badly that that everyone in the 12 bed dorm left even after he had been thrown out because the stench that he left was so strong that only a complete fumigation of the entire room (and throwing away his mattress) could have possibly gotten rid of it.

Best?

Enjoy Hostel in Budapest. Run by a family who would make us a homecooked meal, the beds were comfortable, the place was spotless and in true Hungarian style, it was super cheap.

They would arrange everything for us at a drop of a hat. Shared a room with 2 Australian girls, good times.

Worst?

It is difficult to say but the Flying Pig in Amsterdam was quite an experience. 32 bed dorms and somebody stole my prescription glasses. It was jam packed and we were sleeping in double bunk beds. Lots of noise and lots of sex. When you're 19 though, this is like a dream come true...

Great facilities though I must add but the actual idea of 32 people is terrible. Even in the army, it was 20 guys in a room and less rowdy

Honourable mention to one in Munich, I cannot recall if it was St Christopher's Inn. Super expensive (thank you Oktoberfest) and graced with Australian farts as another poster mentioned.

I can imagine Australian farts becoming a theme in backpacking experiences.

My worst hostel experience was also Flying Pig Amsterdam. The dorm room there was quite stinky because of all the people and just didn't really click with the group of people that were there that weekend.

Best experience probably Carpe Noctem Vitae in Budapest. I got annihilated 3 nights in a row. The pub crawls were unreal there and they organized a riverboat cruise for Halloween on the cheap. Also the only time I had sex in a hostel.
