Nice, sunny places to live from November to March

Nice, sunny places to live from November to March

I always travel between November and March to stay away from Winter in Germany. I quite like it here when it's spring and summer.

In the last decade I first backpacked a lot and then I traveled less and spent more weeks and months in the bigger cities to meet girls, have a more steady daily routine and social relationships.

After spending two weeks on Tablas in the Philippines with a friend, I felt how nice it is to stay in a safe natural paradise that is easy to discover, not crowded at all, has awesome weather conditions and not much tourism going on. Still, it's a bit too provincial for staying several months and it's probably hard to find a nice private place and interesting social connections there.

I'm now looking for places that tick the following boxes in the months from November to March:

1. Nice weather = Sunny, but preferably not too much so I don't have to use sunscreen every day or hide in the shade/room for half of the day. Around 20°C - 30°C which is 68°F - 86°F.
2. The place should be in or close to the nature. I don't need an ocean for swimming (I also don't mind), but forest, hills or mountains would be nice. It should be green.
3. There shouldn't be much pollution and traffic.
4. I must have my own place with a well equipped kitchen and privacy. The place has to be close to a market with fresh unprocessed vegetables, fruits, eggs, meat, fish. It's important for me, because I have issues with my stomach.
5. Banging many girls is no priority anymore, but being able to find a decent girl or two and social connections in general should be possible. I don't like to party. I prefer laid back places.
6. There shouldn't be too much "flowing" tourism. I don't mind foreigners that stay long term. (I also don't mind tourists, it's just because of the way a place and his inhabitants become because of tourism)
7. A decent gym should be close by.
8. It should be easy to rent a motorbike or otherwise there must be good public transport.
9. It should be safe, so I can just take my motorbike, drive into the nature, start hiking etc. without there always being a realistic possibility of getting robbed.

I know a place like that isn't easy to find and this is just my ideal imagination of that place, but right now I've had enough of big polluted cities (with lots of easy girls) and crowded touristy paradises. I'm looking for something like that paradise, but without the tourism and the possibility to live in a nice place, cook for myself and still be able to meet new people.

Are there any places like that in the Philippines? The good thing about the Philippines is that no matter where you are, many locals speak decent English. I've had quite the opposite experience when I traveled through Vietnam by motorbike. The people there where really nice though!

I didn't like Bali. Way too crowded and touristy. Durian season in December was awesome though [Image: biggrin.gif] Cheapest durians in my life and they were sold just everywhere once I left the tourist centers. Nusa Lembongan is nice for a few days, but it's just too small, crowded and touristy. I've had an awesome time on Nusa Penida, but it's not for living.

Bandung is the place that came closest for me in Indonesia, but traffic still sucks and lots of pollution there. Malang is the same. Lombok also came close, but it's hard to find a good private place to stay and parts of Lombok are not that safe, because of locals and natural disasters. I also felt lonely there after some time and Indonesia would in general just be better without Islam.

I gave up on Indonesia after spending about three months there. So fucking crowded everywhere [Image: biggrin.gif] Maybe I will give Sulawesi or other more southern islands a try in the future.

From the bigger cities I have been to, Kuala Lumpur comes closest to what I'm looking for, but it's still crowded, even in the easy accessible nature around. You can't be for yourself. I also really like Bangkok, but there is no easy daily accessible nature and of course it's crowded and polluted. Big cities in Vietnam are also way too polluted, crowded and have bad traffic, but I missed out on cities like Da Nang, Hoi An etc. because I spent most of the time in the north. Maybe some place in Vietnam? Can't stay there longer than a month anyway.

Any information about the South of Taiwan during Winter?

Thailand could also be able to deliver a place like that, because there infrastructure can be quite good, it's still cheap but probably also always touristy at those places with nice apartments and a good variety of food in the markets.

I would also be willing to improve my Spanish if there are places like that in Latin America. So far I've only been in Ecuador and Dominican Republic. I don't know much about Latin America.

Are there any developed first world(ish) places with nice weather during that time besides New Zealand, Australia, Southern part of USA? I was thinking about taking my car and driving down to Andalusia in Spain, Algarve in Portugal or Sicily in Italy, but my research showed that the weather also won't be good at those places during Winter. Just not as bad as in Germany.

I appreciate every information that I can include into my research.

I see why there's tons of yous in Australia at this time.
They are much more boring than the ones in Thailand and there are just as many if not more.

It's a little difficult to find a city in Thailand that fits all your criteria but if pollution and traffic is a concern of yours then what I can tell you to be aware of is Chiang Mai in my personal experience.

Many people both long and short term residents have been able to tolerate it but Chiang Mai's pollution was the worst I've ever experienced in the whole world.
I thought the centre of Paris and perhaps Sydney CBD have noticeable but and tolerable air pollution but Chiang Mai takes the cake on a whole different level.
There are lots of articles out there on this.
Although it was a week long stay in my nearly month long South East Asia trial run to see where I want to stay long term in the future, the pollution alone made me glad to leave.

You can try the Thai Islands that better fit your criteria but they're transient places and more people only come around big events.
Maybe have a look at one of the Greek Islands like Corfu though I went there during the summer not winter and there will be tourists for sure at the ports or certain parts.

One place to consider would be Cape Town, South Africa. I haven't been there myself, but I hear that the weather is perfect during those months (Mediterranean climate), women are beautiful and the lifestyle is good if you have enough money. The negatives would be the crime rate, and inter-racial strife.

I reckon Philippines would be the perfect place for you mate, it fits the bill just right. But it's up to you to travel here and see if it fits your lifestyle or not. I suggest you try out different islands as well, I'm going to be visiting Cebu very soon too. As soon as my trip is done I'll be dropping a data sheet on everything so be on the lookout for it. But right now it looks like I will be back here for longer when it gets really cold in Europe. I prefer it over Thailand because I find it less invaded by tourists and expats and cheaper, but the ladyboys and pros keep it back from being an absolute pussy paradise because it means that you need to put in some work to filter them out. It's still a nice place and I'd recommend it to everyone that's looking to get away from the harsh colds of Europe/N America.

If you’re looking for something a little closer to home, a great place would be Funchal, on the Portuguese island of Madeira off the coast of Morocco. It’s situated just perfectly so that it’s permanently springtime there.

I am in a very similar situation, due to seasonal work I can be away from November-April.

Interested in The Philippines, Argentina, Mexico, and Panama due to weather/cost/and long term tourist visa options. And the ease of learning Spanish compared to other languages.
Cheapest cities I could do this?

Also just saw Okinawa mentioned twice. Very little info on Okinawa it seems. I have read these people are not too fond of Americans due to some sexual assaults and murders coming from the Marine base.

Scottsdale could be good. However, the public transport sucks, and I wouldn't characterize the women here as very high integrity. They are good looking though. It hits all other points on the list.
