This reminds me of an interesting experience I had when I visited Jordan several years ago. I was staying in a cheap hotel which had (strangely for the region) a no smoking policy, so I smoked outside the back entrance which was on a dimly lit street. Several times, cars slowed down and the driver rolled down his window and said something in Arabic, then drove off when I replied that I don't speak Arabic.
