A legend indeed.
Sitting here finishing up a project with "Smokey" on the other monitor.
RIP.

I need to watch him in something fun. Sadly, all I've seen him in is Deliverance (shudder) and Boogie Nights.
I hear Cannonball Run was horrible but in a good way.

I loved Sharkeys Machine. A serious role.

Though he was a Waycross boy, Reynolds left an indelible mark on Atlanta, with the aforementioned Burt's Place, the Lakewood Fairgrounds, Sharkey's Machine (Underground ATL), and probably points west along I-20 shooting 'Smokey.'
edit: Not to mention NE GA Tallulah Gorge area shooting 'Deliverance.'

I always thought he did well when he appeared on Jeopardy as Turd Furgeson.

Sad news. While he was undoubtedly 'macho', he tempered it with a wry, comic sensibility. He never seemed to take any of it too seriously. Indeed, on the radio on the way to work, a stuntman friend of his told how he wasn't interested in the serious roles, or the intellectual side of acting and was only in the business to 'have a good time'.
Interestingly, from a game perspective, when pressed by the nosey Radio 4 presstitute to tell salacious stories about Burt's 'many conquests', the stuntman frustrated the hapless journo by unhelpfully telling the truth; that 'women weren't a priority in his life!' The stuntman told how Reynolds was more interested in 'racing, hanging around with the guys and having a good time'. Sounded like he just put himself first and the sluts just came to him. Helped that he was a handsome fucker of course.
Not many of the real superstars left now. Eastwood, yeah. Kirk Douglas of course, but his incredible age makes him an outlier belonging to a different age altogether.
Thanks for the memories Burt! I'm thankful that I was lucky enough to grow up seeing you in so many great movies.

RIP.
A-list actors don't have to chase pussy especially since they are the man sex-symbol during the 1970s. Pussy comes to him as an afterthought.
I think that he had a well-lived life and there is no more that can be added to it.

When we first got cable in the early 80s (back then they had to lay the cable for it to reach your house), Cannonball Run was shown constantly.
Its terrible but in a good way. Not sure it holds up.
Deliverance in my opinion is his best film, and very underappreciated. I avoided watching the uncut version for years because of the rape scene. But its definitely worth watching. His character is someone who does things on his own terms. A recent film, The Revenant, got a lot of acclaim, but its really a ripoff of Deliverance but not as good.
Not sure how well known this is but Burt played RB at FSU. He was a promising athlete but blew out his knee after his first year or so. His roommate was a third string QB, Lee Corso. Burt did a lot of things at FSU anonymously, like gifts to certain organizations including the football team for new uniforms. (He did this in the late 80s, around the time of the old Punt Rooskie, even though having an alternate uniform is all the rage these days).

I think Mel Gibson qualifies as belonging to the 'old-school, bona-fide movie star' crowd too. We think of his action movies (and his recent indiscretions) while forgetting just how huge a star he was in the Rom-com world (What Women Want, etc). And of course, the bitches loved him (voted 'Sexiest Man Alive' at one point).
There aren't many male movie stars left who you'd want to 'have a pint with', but Eastwood and Gibson are definitely up there.
But the day belongs to Burt Reynolds and I for one am looking forward to seeing lots of re-runs of his best films in the next few weeks. Deliverance would be nice, but I liked The Longest Yard too (released as 'Mean Machine' in the UK).

Speaking of Burt and Clint, the UK Daily Mail had this gem of a story from Reynolds in their piece on him today.
Quote:Quote:
"Clint Eastwood and I have been friends since the Fifties, when we were both working for Universal.
...
"I won't say Clint was shy, but in those days he only said about nine words a year. And he did have a bit of a temper.
"Once, we were sitting at a bar when a woman came over and sale something to him that he didn't like. I turned just in time to see her pour a beer over his head.
"He didn't say anything. He just stood up, picked up a beer and poured it over her head. And then he picked up another one, and another and another.
"He poured four or five beers over her, said: "I'll see you later" and walked out.
"Nobody said a word."

We can always post his cosmopolitan centerfold...
