In addition to other advice given, I'd stop consuming alcohol with people you barely know in dangerous countries. Not having a clear head makes situations like this so much worse.
I was robbed by someone I know and will probably see again.
I have a cousin in Colombia that goes through "junkie" times and non-junkie times. He's in the Pereira/Dos Quebradas area. He's super skinny, but would stab someone if it came to that.
The posts in this thread are correct and you should just take the "L", but, it's odd the way that this happened. You 2 were together and he just snatched it out of your pockets/hands?
Also, is it possible that, even though he defended you from bullies initially, he may have either a.) changed his mind about his feelings towards you or b.) seen you flashing money, and decided to say "fukk it, Ima rob this fool!"?

I know half the posts here are going to criticize you for being dumb (either putting yourself in a bad situation or for trying to get revenge) but the urge for revenge is an inmate emotion all men have. People will say, it's not worth it, and they are obviously right, but it doesn't change how you feel. Our ancestors got here by punishing other cavemen for trivial things like stealing their rocks or slighting them socially so it makes sense you have the same masculine urges.
I'd just write it off as a life lesson. Less than $10000 is a joke today. You will lose out many battles from here, just learn something from it. I believe tit-for-tat is a natural thing and revenge is an appropriate action in some cases but your loss is so trivial and the cost/reward ratio in this case is not worth it. It's better if you can just avoid the same mistake next time and move on. I've lost 10's of thousands of dollars on bad advice, I didn't get revenge on these men, I just learned to not take on the advice of others, it's a life lesson that can only be learned by making mistakes.

Stop living the ghetto life. That is all.
Dr Johnson rumbles with the RawGod. And lives to regret it.
And that was the last we heard from him as he decided to keep it real:
I kept it real once when I was 19 years old in TJ Mexico. A guy snatched my cell phone from my hand when my friend at the time was trying to score some blow "from a guy he knew". I smoked him in the face and that was pretty much my demise after that. I ended up fighting my way out the car "keeping real" because I thought I was a tough guy.
While I managed to get out of the car I quickly learned not only was it the guys in the car that were trying to kidnap me..... four guys in a car behind us were also part of their crew. After I was beat and robbed by 6 guys (one with a aluminum bat.) I was left on the side of the road incapacitated with broken ribs, arm and a fractured eye socket. Luckily someone saw everything and helped me get to the boarder crossing. I think if they had not knocked me out they would have killed me. As my friend that was kidnapped later told me they said we killed your friend. My friend complied and ended up stabbed and robbed then released on the street a week later but luckily survived.
Note: I was a seasoned boxer and a state wrestling champion that made it to US Nationals and had competed since I was 11. I barely made it out of the car against one guy who I'm sure was not his first merry-go-round. Also when you are not fighting in a controlled environment go ahead and subtract about 85% of your skills. Subtract 100% when you're facing more than a single opponent. I was lucky they didn't stab and shoot me for good measure.
Don't put your life on the line for some cash and a passport. You're already lucky you walked away without a scratch on you and a bit of a bruised ego which is better than being dead.
You're in South America man, if you fuck around it's not going to be like squaring off with some retard at a western university town watering hole. You never know... that guy might be related to some very dangerous people.
Also if you try don't think that guy won't put you out there if you did successfully beat his ass and get your shit back or you'd be foolish. If he meets you again I'd suspect it'll not be unarmed or alone. Then you'll be calling your mom and dad begging them to Western Union your ransom plus still get killed after. You can call the US Consulate there and ask them how many missing peoples reports they get a month and hear for yourself. Now as a combat veteran with lots of random training and experience in my mid 30's, I still walk away from fights in places I'm not a local. This shouldn't be a regular thing unless you're an asshole.
Even in Ukraine with this crypto-currency trend two people were kidnapped last time I was in Kiev for crypto-currency ransoms which make it even easier now to not get caught.
Only carry photo copies of your passport when going out and keep a side stash of cash somewhere else on you. If you want to be really cautious keep a dummy wallet on you with a little cash in it and some useless shit in it too make the wallet look legit. Hand it over and walk away.
You should only get into physical confrontations when your life or physical well-being is actually on the line and you literally have no other options. Does not matter who you are, how big you are and how experienced or trained you are.

I remember one of the Karate masters I met who was also extremely strong as a fighter. When we asked him what he would do if 2 men start some trouble, then he answered: "I would run, what else? There is an infinite number of things that can go wrong with every fight." Then someone responded: "But there was this one time you fought against 4 guys in some alley and won."
"Yes, but I had no choice and I was lucky that no one pulled a knife or gun on me and that I did not kill one of them or even hurt them permanently on accident. But keep in mind that this was after some 25 years of training since childhood. If one of them had dropped badly and cracked his skull open I might be in prison now longer than they would be."

I trained in the service extensively in how to disarm someone with a knife, pistol or long gun and guess what? never once had one pulled on me when I was in combat at a range where those skills would have been effective.
I actually hate those stupid rehearsed Krav Maga videos on youtube displaying that shit. It's cool for the movies or to show off at a party with a friend but not a real life.
I always tell friends that ask me about it to get into combat sports for health and fun. Even taking regular self defense courses can give someone a illusion of confidence that could land them in a box. In the military service I was in for CQB and Hand to Hand we trained for hours upon hours a day for the entire stint of our service.
If you pointed a pistol at my chest from 15 feet away today I'd also run or toss my fake shit to you then run because I never carry anything on me worth my life or prison time.
God even thinking about it now, after my years of training I highly doubt that even if I lured a guy in close to me with a pistol or knife I'd even be able to execute the proper actions without serious injury to myself or the other person these days. It's not something I regularly practice anymore and muscle memory does not work like that.
Funny thing is back in Texas I ended up getting into a argument with a self defense instructor at my gym after listening to him teach a class on how to disarm without preemptively telling the class do not try this in the real world unless you're doing this on a regular basis and it's part of your day job in which you'll be training daily.
I've traveled with nola, and can verify what he's telling you. DON'T put your life at risk just because you made a bad character judgement about someone and got burned. Learn from the experience and move on. You're in Colombia, and you don't know who this guy is related to or has connections with.

Fatherless children in bad economic situations. Just like the Boston and other northern cities in the 1800s. Substantial amount of them immigrants and children of immigrants, amirite?
Interesting username.
I’d avoid talking/befriending strangers in such circumstances. In your case, it is easy. Cut any contact with this guy.

If he kept it real, then maybe not.
The thing about cowardice and bravery is - it has to be for something that is worth it. If they kidnap your buddy or your family - then by all means - risk your life and kill and be killed.
In this case as well as with many other instances it's not worth it. I recently also had an opportunity to "keep it real" with a neighbor of mine. He was pissed off, said something stupid and I told him back. We almost got into a fight for nothing. Now we are in good terms. He said sorry, I met his hot girlfriend. Things are good - he just had a lousy day back then. Conflict is only worth it, when it's about something worth fighting for. Then you can show no mercy and risk the consequences.
^^^ lesson here Zelcorpion is delivering is not only knowing when to keep it real but also being aware of reality.
Let's all pray the OP did not keep it real in Columbia

If the other guy has a gun, you give him what you want, if they have a knife you run(assuming you are in an open area). Always have a photocopy or 3 of your passport, in case you get robbed. Now you will have to stand in line at your embassy. And stop hanging out with gay hookers!
Edit I wrote this for the OP assuming he is still alive but decent advice for anyone

I was thinking this and then Scotian stepped in to say it (except he actually has the connections).
I advise going this route. It's not often you have the option to serve up a little South American revenge so nicely. Just make sure you are around to watch it happen.

Do we really need to be talking about arranging the stabbing of people on the forum after the Alexandre Cazes and AlphaBay thing? For a mere $100?
It doesn’t matter if no one knew what Cazes was doing off-forum - it was a near miss and I was deeply surprised the forum itself wasn’t falsely implicated by unethical leftist typists.
I get it, real life can be much murkier and darker than posts on a forum. Shit happens and it’s a part of life. Revenge is real.
But writing that in this thread is terribly shortsighted. I can’t mince my words.
There’s a big difference between members of this forum discussing breaking gender pronoun laws and even hypothetically saying, “I’ll put you in touch with someone who can stab him for you.”
I promise you: if we make a business of stray comments like that, eventually the whole forum will be done in by some vague or remote connection to something that happens offline. It doesn’t matter how tenuous.
I’m all for karma, but advising folks to get someone stabbed should be off-forum.
