I don't recommend Bulgaria...

This is sort of a short post about Bulgaria before I forget, but at some point I will post a datasheet. I'm in Sofia, and I don't recommend it to anyone.

Sometimes it can be hard to articulate why a country makes you feel uneasy, and I sort of have that feeling with Bulgaria, unable to articulate the feeling it gives me exactly. Articulate-able issues with this place include:

1) Brits, this is a big issue, and no offense to Brit forum members, but you guys are generally horrible tourists. I nearly fought a pack of Brits, and they adhered to the stereotypes, loudly asking me where the strip club was! They wanted to fight me because I used a colloquial American term of endearment to refer to several of them. This is some of the most gay behavior I've seen from tourists in my life... Meanwhile they were making fun of me because I'm from Texas. There are too many Brits here in Sofia.

2) Too many tourists in general: There are just a lot more tourists here than in Macedonia, Bosnia or Serbia. These EasyJet types are ruining the city. This place feels a lot more Western European than say, Skopje or Belgrade--I.e. feels more cosmopolitan, international, hear a lot more english or western european languages.

3)Bulgarians: For a country that I thought would be awesome, so far the Bulgarians have let me down. Bulgarians are slow (on Balkan time as I call it) and not generally as polite as a Serbs or Macedonians. I will say this: all the interaction I've had with the girls so far has been VERY positive. The women seem to be pretty nice, maybe not comparable to girls in macedonia, but VERY nice to obvious foreigners.

4)Taxis: Scamming is not such a big deal as it is in Serbia. But I had a taxi driver that I nearly fought because he refused to allow us to carry a bottle of vodka in the trunk. This is probably just one bad experience, but now I have a bad taste in my mouth about the taxi drivers.

Also, I have been traveling for over three days, I am not an angry person at all, I merely have just lost my patience being on the plane so long. In Bulgaria's credit, it is a cheap country, the women look aight, and the scenery is beautiful, especially the mountain (7000ft I believe) over-looking Sofia.

Let me guess, you spent 1 week or less and now you have a "feeling" about the place?

Bro I don't know what you mean? I've been here 3 days. I don't like it. I don't like it at all. Serbia, or Macedonia are better choices.

I mean if you've only spent 3 days in a place then you hardly even know the place. Have you made any local friends? I'm sure if you had a circle of local friends you'd have a much different experience. You can spend 3 days in any city, but if you have no friends or don't know where to go then it won't be fun.

They would seem to me, to be similar to Macedonian girls. But I haven't been impressed so far. Decent number of girls with dark hair (black), and I think the women have darker skin than the women in croatia. This is really all concjecture for me, because I am very jet-lagged, but these are my observations.

The women have been pretty nice so far man-- one chick took a photo of us, the group I was with, and was very helpful. Another woman, I told that we were lost, and she graciously walked us to the bar that we were looking for. In first place I think Macedonia has the nicest women, but Bulgaria has some very nice women.

I'm too tired to describe the bulgarian women much more, but if you look in my signature, you will find a description of the macedonian women, who are pretty much the same as bulgarian women (don't tell them that though)!

I don't claim to know it--I merely have a series of short vignettes of how it's appeared to me so far. Within 10 minutes of arriving at my destination, I had already met 2 Bulgarian friends. I am with some Serbs, but as is typical for the serbs, they drink, yell loudly, take their shirts off, and help me look for people to potentially fight. it has been good so far, but they have been drinking too much.

Be smart and don't get your head stomped in, Dragan. I know you're with your boys from Serbia, and even though Serbs are alpha as fuck, well, same goes for Bulgarians and you're in unfamiliar territory. As for your analysis of Sofia, you're spot-on: way too many tourists.

edit: thanks for the good vibes brother. I'm going to crawl under a dumpster or something like that.

I've been more aggressive than the serbs which is really funny, this is kind of a role reversal, because I am basically a pacifist. Too many tourists man. The Serbs are actually being too friendly with the local talent here, haha.

Dude, as a Bulgarian, sofia sucks. I recommend Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas and Veliko Tyrnovo. Sofia has become a smog infested, globalized shit hole. It's a horrible capital city and there are much nicer cities in Bulgaria than it. For future travellers to Bulgaria, I recommend visiting during the summer and immediately skipping Sofia for Plovdiv and the sea side. Stay away from Sunny Beach since it's infested with British stag parties. Get some sleep-there's plenty Bulgaria has to offer, both in sight seeing and girls, it's just not in Sofia (although girls there are nice).

Also the reason Macedonian and Bulgarian girls are basically the same is because Macedonians are brainwashed Bulgarians LOL

You bash brits and their behavior, but why would you want to fight local meatheads ?!? (or even other tourists) ?!? ......furthermore, if it's you on your avatar (sorry but you made it public) , you seem to be a pretty skinny guy, so IMO unless you are one of those Hollywood ninja, you don't want any problem with a local semi-mafia gym douchebag, as there is tons in Bulgaria.

I was being a bit cheeky, but maybe it didn't come off well--I'm a bit jet-lagged, and take my words about Sofia with a grain of salt, and didn't mean my original post too seriously, but the bit about the Brits, I do mean it seriously. I was making a joke about Serbs and how they like to fight, maybe a bad joke on my part. Part of the reason I thought my original post was so funny, is because I implied I was also being a bad tourist as an American. Re-read the original post if you don't believe me. The avatar is a serbian guy, so no, that's not me.

Anyway, was just to quibble ........ I understand that one can be disappointed by the overall atmosphere of a place, especially when you're an intuitive person - and even after three days. I also intuitively (and almost immediatly) know if a place will be "my kind of place" or not - and no, it's not about the available chicks, but about the overall atmosphere. I guess you'll feel better in Belgrade ....... I also find serbians on the whole more friendly, smart and welcoming than bulgarians ..... but of course, there's also many dumb, violent and foreigner-haters in Serbia, as everywhere in the Balkans or the FSU.

Actually, and as a side note, IMO the only places where you are totally safe (but still, shit can happen) are the high-end venues, this simply because the wealthy local guys know that, as a thirsty foreigner on a three weeks sex-vacations, you are not competition, and they don't give a flying shit about you, you're just a cockroach for them -and yeah, even if you "suit up" or this shit.

Dragan, the problem here is I suspect many of us think the problem here may be you/your mood when you wrote the post rather than Bulgaria. You've been there three days. You could go to Bangkok or moscow for 3 days, happen to get mugged and cheated by a taxi driver, and say "Russia sucks" or "SE Asia sucks". I've nearly fought with taxi drivers in China and Brazil, and have been scammed by various others in places like Moscow, so it's just not a reason to pan a place. And, I suspect most people who go to Bulgaria don't almost get into a fight with Brit chavs. These experiences are just too idiosyncratic to write off a country.

Bulgarian girls with two dark black hair and big tittle really my weakness. You should be heading to the costal cites and towns like Varna as it is not external tourist heavy and largely an escape for the locals.

Americans can attract trouble by being loud and obnoxious.

Sounds like classy company you keep, and you complain about British tourists?

Why would a taxi driver care about having a bottle of Vodka in the trunk? You said that you are a pacifist, yet you almost got in a fight about it?

There are a lot of beautiful women in Bulgaria. However, Dragans assessment is spot on in terms of taxis, brits and overall lameness of Sofia. Wether he will stay 3 days, 3 months or 3 years it's probably not going to change... and even get worse.

I don't recommend Bulgaria...

I've spent many, many months in Bulgaria and have come to love the country.

1) Brits are horrible travelers. They come to places like Bulgaria and show blatant disrespect to the culture and customs. I've heard very few positive things from my Bulgarian friends and family regarding Brits. I've witnessed it too many a time. Just loud and obnoxious.

2) Bulgaria is a conservative culture. One night stand culture doesn't exist much outside places like Studentski Grad and the Black Sea during the summer. But girls are very approachable. Malls, restaurants, parks, walking down Vitoshka in Sofia, stores, buses, very easy to strike up conversations and set up dates. Takes a few generally to get laid.

3) Bulgaria in no way is a tourist haven. There's the main parts of Sofia, then the Black Sea, places like Varna during the summer, but get away from those areas and you're likely to not hear another American for weeks. My wife is Bulgarian so I stay in her communist era block tower when there, stroll the neighborhood and after 6+ months there alone I've heard maybe 2-3 other people speaking English. We also own a house in a village and I've been told I'm the only American who's set foot there. I happen to like that. I enjoy the insulation, the difference, the clash of cultures.

4) Bulgarians appear to not be friendly. It's an alpha culture. It's a culture which experiences a lot of struggle. But once you get past the opening conversations they're some of the warmest and most hospitable people I've ever come across. I can't go to someone's apartment there without the entire fridge being offered to me along with coffee and rakia.

5) You will get ripped off if you look like a foreigner and don't speak any of the language. Learn a few words. Know which taxi companies are legit. Ask to see the menu with your receipt when paying in a restaurant. Then remember it's a culture where tipping isn't the norm.

6) In general anyone suggesting Bulgaria, even Sofia is too full of tourists or the Brits are annoying, is in the wrong areas. You're not experiencing the real Bulgaria. It takes 10 mins to get outside the Sofia downtown area, get to a neighborhood like Hadji Dimitar, walk into a Fantastico and ask some cute Bulgarian what the best bread is to go with feta and rakia. Something that simple strikes up a conversation and shows an interest and basic understanding of the culture. Then you take her out for coffee and a walk near NDK. Then dinner. Then you bang. At that point she'll be cooking breakfast for you and making sure you're happy, as again, it's both a conservative and traditional culture.

Извинете ме. добър ден. ти си красива. Моля. говориш ли английски. добре, добре will open most girls as a foreigner and they'll be impressed you made the effort to open in their language.

Izvinet te (Excuse me). Dober den (good day). Ti si krasiva (you are beautiful). Molia (you're welcome). Govorish li Engliski? (do you speak English?). Dobre, dobre (Good, good).

Dobro ootro (good morning). Dober vecher (good evening).

You open like that and it's so simple, and most girls will immediately have interest. Given you're a decent looking guy.
