I highly recommend a career as a tax accountant at a small or mid-range firm. You get a variety of work experience and meet new people. You will work 70+ hours a week December through April, which I don't mind because I hate the winter months and much rather be inside. Besides the girls are all covered up anyways. You'll make the best of it during the summer/fall months because your pocket is loaded with overtime money and it forces you to game hard because the busy season comes up quick. Hopefully you found someone you can keep around during those busy months because you will have no life.

Stay away from the Big Four, its assembly line work thats keeps you busy year around and you will become suicidal. If you decide to leave, your experience will count for nothing and you will have to start over.

This isn't true. Most companies recruit heavily for their in-house accounting postions from the Big 4 external audit.

In fact, the most marketable thing you can do if you want to do accounting is do 2-3 years at a big 4 firm (long enough to get your CPA signed off) and then go to work in industry. The only problem with this plan is those 2-3 years in Big 4 accounting will probably kill you.

Ah, well. Just think of it as a price to pay if you want to get far in accounting.

Im no longer studying Accounting in school. I dropped this lesson because it was killing me. Everything was just spinning around my head all the time and had nightmares. Since i dropped it, it was just a huge relief for me. I wasn't even doing what people do in Universities and i couldn't handle it.

@Eazy-E they might recruit heavily but they aren't going to pay you much. 2-3 years, the average accountant has only audited cash and done depreciation schedules. There is much easier ways to get your audit hours. The key is to have a balanced life, avoiding the Big 4 is the best route for a man that chooses accounting as his trade.

@Zoom I want to be part of a partnership with less than four partners. Laser is right, accounting is full of smart beta guys. I would much rather have a guy that "lives to work" as a partner and piggy-back off him. It will take away some of the stress. To me, the risk is not worth the reward to go solo.

@Andreas that is too bad. Accounting is a great a major, especially in these economic times. Good luck to you on whatever you decide to do!
