I say almost because he’s not dead yet. Give it a day or two. They say he has dementia along with a thoroughly destroyed liver from decades of alcoholism. He’s in a medically induced coma and needs a liver transplant however he’s probably not in any condition to have surgery.

Great post.

When I was a little kid, he was one of the first singers I really took to. Soon after, I stopped listening because nothing was less cool than listening to the Partridge Family.

Decades later, when I became a music writer, I went back to those old albums to get some perspective. To my COMPLETE surprise, I discovered that not only was Cassidy a great singer (always in tune, always sang with genuine emotion), but he was hugely influential in my musical tastes and way ahead of his time.

The Partridge Family had some great tunes. But in addition, he would slip these fantastic, soulful oldies into their repertoire and onto his solo albums. No one else in the U.S. was covering obscure soul artists like Maxine Brown then (see below). In England, this sort of revivalism would become known as Northern Soul. I own scads of this stuff. It's my favorite music ever. And I can thank Cassidy for first putting it into consciousness of this white, suburban kid.

Beyond the below oldie (which was penned by Goffin-King and later on covered by many), some of the better Partridge Family originals include "Point Me In The Direction of Albuquerque," "Morning Rider On The Road," "I Got Your Love All Over Me," "There's No Doubt In My Mind," and the entire "Bulletin Board" album, which I think is their best.

She even made a go of it in the nineties on L.A. Law.

It's not entirely clear whether the two actually banged. Some attempt at a date was made and it may or may not have been consummated before he stopped it. Either way, Susan Dey fell in love with him and that love lasted many years. (Alpha widow)

Check out this video from the early 90s and, let me just say, I know what real love looks like and she's still madly in love with him at this time, unrequited or not. The life-coaching advice she gives to him was also very good and he did not heed it which is why he's where he is now. It's very sad.

I can't believe I know this, but according to what I've read and heard from his interviews, he and Susan went on one date which was before he went on a tour. He half-heartedly kissed her and that was the end of it. He was in a different mental place after the tour and they never connected again like that.

To get some perspective on why this was, he's told stories of coming back to his hotel room after concerts and his best friend (who was his road manager, I think) having naked girls waiting. There are also tales of him going to pool parties and having so many girls throw themselves at him he had to hide.

Also, both Farrah Fawcett and Cheryl Ladd guest starred on "The Partridge Family" and I wonder if Cassidy didn't have some say in casting female guest stars because he wanted to sleep with them. I'm positive that Seinfeld was doing this after he became popular, since several of those guest stars clearly could not act, such as "Nicki the Blonde."

When I first read this I was outraged because I thought this actress lady married Mr. O'Connor and got in the supreme Court. La law doesn't qualify you for that. Then I googled it and calmed down.

Of course, I saw lots of reruns back in the 1970's. It's interesting that the Partridge Family was more popular in the ratings when it aired. However, it hasn't quite stood the test of time like the Brady Bunch has. They put out some good stuff like this. Of course, David and Shirley were the only ones who were actually singing:

David Cassidy's father Jack was also married to Shirley Jones for a while.

If I were in his shoes I dunno if I'd have done things differently because he had the pick of the litter, but I'm not sure he ever found a woman who loved him as much as she looked like she still did in that reunion video. Maybe if they actually had gotten together then reality would have burst her fantasy and it would have crashed and burned, but DAMN, she really looked like she wanted to drag him backstage and spoon him for hours in that video. Most men go an entire lifetime without experiencing that kind of adoration, let alone to see it still burning after a decade.

I haven't read his biography but supposedly the first pressing of it handled this whole episode in a way that Dey felt was insulting and/or an invasion of privacy and that's what caused her to stop communicating...and I think the reason why she took the depiction so hard is it finally drove home the fact that her love was one-sided. I think maybe even up to that point she had been holding on to the idea that he secretly loved her.

We'll see if she decides to visit him on his death bed.

BTW, Dey had her fair share of self-destructive lifestyle during and after the Patridge Family but she's a rare example of a child star who got her shit together. A real study in contrasts.

I was too young to watch the Partridge Family, which didn't get much rerun traction in the 80s, unlike other vintage 60s sitcoms like The Brady Bunch or Leave It To Beaver, but one thing that really stands out here is that this might have been the first family sitcom without a father figure, no Ward Cleavers there. Hmm...

In the early 2000s I worked at a shitty LA fitness in the valley when I first arrived in southern California, there was this smoking hot lady there who had dark curly hair.

When I asked who she was I was told "that's one of the Cassidy guy's wives".

I ended up working out with the guy over the course of my time in the gym and he was a REALLY fit dude (at that time).

I never asked which one he was or who he was because it was just sort of something I felt I was expected to know and in my early 20s was a little embarrassed to ask.

I thought he was really cool because he was older but fit and had a hot wife and seemed to have a real cool attitude. He was an actor who seemed to work enough to provide a decent life (somewhere in the valley).

That was all shattered one day when after a long period of not seeing him he came back with an Australian accent after having spent some time there doing some filming or other.

I remember that was one of the last times I spoke to him before I went to work someplace else.
