Study after study has come to the conclusion that a diet high in meat causes a number of health complications, including, but not limited to cancer. Of course the idiots over on that forum say that all the studies are faulty and it's all because of carbs and omega 6. It's never the meat. Yeah, ok.

Well not quite where I wanted to go with this...

Docter, how do you compensate for the carbs in the beginning? I have over 180 lbs lean mass and I eat like a beast. I am learning to cook better things and my go to veggies are spinach, broc and carrots. It seems pretty difficult to cut all the grains.. beans/legumes and sugar seems way easier to me than say.. oatmeal / brown rice.

Study after study shows just about everything you come in contact with on a daily basis can cause cancer.

I understand where you're coming from about "the idiots over on that forum" and I agree. They put bacon at the center of practically every meal. My opinion is that they overdo it on the fat intake. But, through my personal experience with the paleo diet, I can say with complete confidence that it made me feel better than I ever have in my adult life. More energy, positive mood, cleaner skin and an increase in woodies throughout the day (don't know how to explain this one). I'm not convinced bacon fat is healthy, but I definitely do not agree that a diet high in protein and fat is bad for you.

There is a lot of conventional thinking from the low-fat fad diets of the 80's and 90's that needs to be undone...just like there is a lot of beta characteristics permeating our culture that needs to be undone.

OP, I won't be doing the Primal Challenge, but good luck to you! I think it's a great thing.

saturated fat is extremely healthy. bacon would only be a problem due to nitrates or sugars. You need saturated fats for brain health (notice how vegans tend to get very angry and aggressive, brain is 70% fat), production of hormones especially the sexual ones, anything that uses cholesterol (every cell pretty much), and maintaining stable blood sugars. This is one area that Paleo by Loren COrdain and Art DeVany are flat out lazy. The Ancel Keys study which says there is a direction correlation between saturated fats and CHD was highly maniputlated test. He only got his results from take the results of 7 countries out of the 22 taken. That's quite a huge alteration. For this dishonesty he was rewarded a Time man of the year in the 50s, and caused a shit load of health problems with the low fat craze.

Grass fed meat, no processed meat, you'll be fine. The dramatic increase in fresh fruit and vegetables from the primal diet will outweigh any negatives from an increase in meat consumption. A year or so in now, I have dropped my meat intake and increased my low glycemic carbs with no noticeable negative affect.

Well, after a short stint of switching out carbs in favor of protein/fat you'll become satiated faster with less food. Fat/protein are better at filling you up, and they don't MAKE you hungry like carbs do. Shit, today I had a pretzel for the first time in forever (80/20 rule!) and I just got done with my 3rd dinner. Normally I eat one.

As for "compensate," you don't need to do that. If you're active, then sure I can see you wanting to consume some more carbs.

Technically, white rice is a loop hole. Because the husk/hull has been removed, there is no longer any of the "anti-nutrients" existent, leaving behind simply carbs. Marksdailyapple has a post on this somewhere, search for it.

I will note that you should attempt the diet challenge, or at least 2 weeks, without white rice/loop holes. It's important to experiment with varying types of the diet. Hell, you may even hate it after a month.

Remember, rule #1 is to enjoy yourself so if the challenge is causing you stupid amounts of stress and such, take a step back.

On a side note to that, I find it is much easier to go cold turkey than weening myself off things, but that's a personal opinion.
