Is french worth learning?

My Rankings would probably be:

1. English
2. Mandarin/Spanish
3. Everything else

Depends, though. If you are just trying to bang girls not worried about business, I'd learn the language that best allowed me to do that.

If It was about business, I'd figure out which region I wanted to do business in and pick a language for that area.

So yeah, to address the question "is french worth learning" I'd say "yes" if you're interested in living and working in french speaking places. On the flipside, I'd say "no" if you don't. No offense to any of our French bros, but I got 0 interest in learning French.

I will be checking my PMs weekly, so you can catch me there. I will not be posting.

The French program on the Duolingo app is pretty good - quite easy to pick up the basics on the go. I tried for a bit and gave up since I was living in a region with zero French people, but if I ever needed to quickly learn the basics I'd give it another go.

When I was younger, I took French courses at the Alliance Francaise in Paris and met a lot of girls there. Back then it was cheap, but I have no idea what it costs now. I think the French government was subsidizing it. They also have branches in other cities.

French women are almost certain to cheat on you in the end but they're sexy as fuck in the short term and it will be the most spoken language in the world in 2050. I'd only learn it if I planned to do business in Africa though I think.

What? They will cheat just as much as any nationalties...

I disagree. There is a strong culture of sexual liberation and not living up to responsibilities in France.

Do you guys think that french is still a language worth learning for a wanna be play boy / international player?

In my opinion, no.

Because in general, women who speak Russian (FSU) and Spanish (Latin America) are much better than French speaking women, so if the question is strictly under the context of "for an international player" then learning French for your SMV would be like fishing with a fishing line in a creek instead of using a large net in the ocean... In conclusion, the most useful languages for an international player are:
1. English
2. Russian
3. Spanish
4. Everything else - Romanian, French, Portuguese etc...

Personally, it's a minor miracle to successfully learn the top 3 languages, so if you can master those more important ones and you have a passion for it then by all means yes try learning French [Image: wink.gif]

You never did anything with your French so why do you think Duolingo got you somewhere useful? It looks like all it did was lead you to quit. Next time, start with your motivation.

To me personally, it's not worth learning French.

I have never been in a situation where I thought to myself "I really wish I knew how to speak French right now". That's just me though.

However, if you're keen on living/doing business in a French speaking country, yes knowing French will be vital.

This is kind of how I feel. Unless you plan to live in France, learning it primarily to game women seems like a mistake. For all the talk about how theoretically useful French is for gaming in the Maghreb and shithole parts of West Africa or Lebanon. There is essentially zero data about doing so on this forum. The rare crazy dude who does go there like a Naughty Nomad, claims to have gotten laid there by local girls without French knowledge. So it seems like a low ROI prospect, without getting into all the cultural cockblocks and relatively high costs in these areas. Arabic would be even more useful in these regions anyway.

I understand this is an English language forum and not the absolute authority on any region but we still have tons of reports from various Spanish, Portuguese and Mandarin Chinese, etc speaking countries. I also frequently speak with guys from all over the world who travel extensively, some being native French speakers and none share tales of "killing it" in these regions. Some native French speakers have even dissuaded me from studying French if I dont plan to live there, as the under 30s generally speak decent English now in the cities.

I've met several French girls who talk about studying Spanish and wanting to explore Latin America, not Francophone Africa or Maghreb regions.

I'm no French hater, I have some French knowledge. I speak Portuguese as well as Spanish. French is clearly a better language to learn than Portuguese. But if I could do it again though, I would have skipped Portuguese and French and invested all that time into Russian.

If you live in the US, learn Spanish first, full stop - far easier and faster, and it will make other Romance languages that much easier.

French is plenty useful, though, that aside, but it really depends on how badly you want to go to the Middle East and Subsaharan Africa. (Or Quebec or Western Europe...but does anyone on this forum feel a pull to New Mecca anymore? I felt safer in Rabat than I think I ever would have in Paris.)

Guys keep giving opinions on this topic based on what they want out of life and women. Unless you really like Russian women or want to do something career wise that has to do with Russian, why in the hell would you learn Russian? I mean it is on my list of things to learn, but that is mainly because I want to get to 5+ languages in the next decade or two. Russian is spoken mainly in one important country, and spoken to varying extents in other countries like Ukraine. If you are not crazy about Russian women, like say if your favorite women are from Norway and Sweden, why would you ever learn Russian? I mean even most Ukrainians hate Russians, and they generally can speak the language (yes I know about Eastern Ukraine).

Same with Mandarin, Farsi, Yoruba, and most others. Yes, I know Mandarin is spoken by over a billion people, but what good is learning it if you don't like Chinese girls and don't plan to do business with or in China?

Bottom line if you want to learn a language just commit 30 minutes to an hour a day to it until you get to the level you want, and don't even think about it besides that.

I'm not trying to shit on the opinions of any other forum members on the topics of languages, but some people might as well recommend that I learn Hindi, but that shit ain't happening any time soon.

If you are talking about getting flags and think learning a language will help, then after English the next two to learn are Spanish and French. Hands down, no argument can be made about that.

I intend to study Arabic, but it is actually a bunch of separate languages.

I intend to study Russian, but as far as game goes it limits you to a handful of countries.

I might consider Mandarin, but that basically only gets you Chinese girls.

If you really want to do something for less than 7 hours a week that will get you the most pussy, hit the gym religiously and eat a spectacular diet. Learning a language isn't a huge DHV for most women, although it can be and it certainly is a brownie point. The main thing it does is let you verbally communicate with someone that you otherwise couldn't.

That was a weird rant, but meh.

You forgot to mention some countries :
Lebanon (christian population)
New Caledonia, Tahiti
Combodia, Vietnam, Laos (educated population and older population)

French will overtake english as the most speaking language (except mandarin) due to growth in Africa in some decades.

French is still really important.

The thing is many people in French speaking countries are either fluent in English or slowly adopting the language as a second language. Many african countries have started teaching English in school as well recently. So French isnt passing English anytime soon.

This is my list.

1. Spanish

Unless China or Russia start conquering people and forcing them to learn those languages. There influence will be mild. I have no problem with both countries but much of the world despises both of them. Japanese and Koreans arent learning Mandarin and most EE countries are no longer speaking Russian as a #2 language. You should learn to speak those languages if you want to live there or do business.

Then I would learn languages of my ancestry. If you're of German ancestry, learn German...etc. You'll be far more likely to learn it if your passionate about it.

Be careful with this language. It's a double edged sword.

French speaking girls are notorious for stealing the phones of men they are attracted to.

I also have been looking to a "pussy Paradise" about 2 or 3 years ago to improve my French in the summer ( to make it almost perfect).

The only 2 options really are Madagascar and Senegal. I would never consider any of the Magreb countries to catch up your French. Only if you want to end up with your left hand every night. The rest of the French speaking countries in Africa are too much of shitholes for me.

Senegal seems to be good for surf, easy for girls and good for learning French. I just checked for accomodation on airbnb and it's relatively cheap and it looks fine. Also a lot of tourists going to Senegal every summer.

Madagascar is well known under the French as a pussy Paradise. A lot of older French guys already going there a lot. Price also seems okay but i'm more concerned about wifi there and electricty and what to eat everyday lol.

So i would chose for Senegal.

And if i can give a last piece of advice for a lot of Americans here who intend to study French: Don't go to Canada to learn French. It's like if you would go to Ireland to learn English. Canadians mix things up and their French is hard to understand, this is well known under the French speaking people.

Go to Tahiti. They speak French.

Problem is, women in Tahiti are kind of like the economy. There are the top tier ones that look like this:

Then there's the bottom of the barrel at look like this:

There is no in between either. They're either group one or group two.

I learned French together with Spanish but unlike the latter haven't really found much use for it. It's rusty now and I don't speak it very fluently anymore and even though I meet many French speaking people all over the world I wish I had picked something else instead like Russian. I don't think French is for me even in top-5 in terms of usefulness of languages. Of course you make the best of what you like and want so if I had a genuine interest in French speaking cultures and/or travelled a lot in Western and Northern Africa I would certainly think differently.

I know conversational French and its not very useful overall. The hard part is that most French people can speak some English.

Nevertheless its definitely more valuable than most languages and has a bit of chic appeal.

The case with the usefulness of French is the same as with every other language from a country with a high % of English speakers.

It's very important to form real relationships. It's not important to go around.

For example, I'm from Germany. Almost every German speaks some decent English nowadays. That means you can easily go around or even befriend people in 1on1 situations with English only. However, as soon as there are group meetings it will be exclusively in German. When my friends and I meet up we speak exclusively German. So, if you are a foreigner and plan to become a regular part of our group, you have to learn that god-damn language. Same goes for France or virtually any other language.

The funny thing is, the more people speak English in a foreign country, the harder it becomes to learn and integrate in said country.
