I've been watching these lately as they come on one of the few channels I get at home.

I loved the show when I was a kid, but it's been laughable to me as an adult.

I watch ot for the nostalgia but it's hard to take seriously sometimes.

One episode features Crockett warning Tubbs not to fall in love with this girl and Tubbs is seducing and being seduced, in probably the most corny ways possible.

Of course Sonny is also working on a caper that requires him to beat big drug dealer in a pool game to convince him to do business with him.

He takes off his white blazer and proceeds to beat the brakes off the other guy, in his sleeveless t-shirt and little wimpy arms.

(Or something like that)

All in all I still enjoy it, it's fun and captures the 80s so well.

On a sidenote the same channel has Johnny Carson come on at the late hour he normally did, and he was also not very funny. It was interesting though because the last episode I watched was from 1982 and the govt was threatening to shut down and he was saying "wouldn't that be great"? to loud applause. I'm not sure if it was a shot at Pres Reagan or what but it was interesting seeing the same things happening then and now.

What always made me laugh about that show was Tubbs' horrible accents. Where did he come up with that Jamaican accent? Cool running, mon.

^-- for me, watching them SEQUENTIALLY made all the difference, so I could suspend disbelief for the cheese factor.

It also helped me appreciate the cinematic development (photography, direction and editing styles), over the series.


But I understand how the cheese (especially romantic stuff) can overwhelm if you are just watching re-runs one-off.

The realism factor was way lower in those times. On the other hand you now also have to suspend belief when you see 100 pound SWAT commander women kick the asses of three 200 pound pro martial artists.

At least back then there was little bending of reality to propaganda - it was just the times where they came up with less realistic stories, because it did not matter on TV back then. The visuals and the basic story was good enough for them. And frankly the emotional aspects and solid storytelling was alright for that time.

Yeah, the original Miami Vice TV series has not aged well. I saw a few episodes a couple years back and had to stop watching it because it was just too painful.

But it did have a cultural impact. At its height in the 80s, the show was featuring the trendiest clothing and music, and was setting the tone for some of the pop culture. It also launched Michael Mann on his career, and he's still one of my favorite directors today.

I liked the movie "Miami Vice" that came out a few years back. A lot of guys didn't like it, but I did. It had a few flaws, but all in all it gave a sleek, harrowing glimpse of lives spinning out of control.

But, I bought the box set of the original. Still missing a few seasons, the one were Sonny goes rogue.

The show is a timeless classic.

The remake is horrible, even though I like both actors.

I guess I wanted more flash, nice suits and hot chicks. The Asian chick that Sonny falls for, doesn't do it for me.

Miami Vice was a brilliant series, that was a complete gamechanger and had huge influence on whole generations. I also had a white Sacco at that time..

Not directly connected to Miami Vice, but if you like the 80s style synth music, Tangerine Dream Edgar Froese (rip) produced a nice soundtrack for GTA V, which contains music, that could have been used in the series 1:1.

Somehow I miss these times, but Stranger Things s02e07 "Chapter Seven: The Lost Sister" also taught me, not everything was perfect back then..

Michael Mann's first feature film Thief (1981) is one of my favorites and still holds up really well


Just watch the opening scene. No dialogue but it really sets the tone for the whole film (Great musical score by... Tangerine Dream as well)

Hahah, absolutely made my day.. Yes, this episode completely ruined the whole series. Not sure, if I will watch the upcoming sequels.

One of the best soundtracks out there. Was running in my CD-Player all time, years before I was able so see the movie, which was often the case back then. Access to music was far more easy, than access to movies, before internet era.

Why are there so many recent productions that are set in the 80s? Is it just nostalgia, or are the 40+ generation the target audience (I postulate, every generation loves, what it experienced, when they were teenagers) or do we all dream of the time before, mobile phones, facebook, sjws? I only know of that phenomena at my time in the 80s with the West German-Israeli comedy Lemon Popsicle, which was set in the 50s.

Is there a 80s movies thread here on RVF? Would like to discuss more, but Miami Vice deserves a thread, not to be hijacked (mea culpa).

Miami Vice was visually stunning. To the best of my knowledge, it used color in ways that (color) TV had not used yet. The pastel-colored clothes, the white Ferrari, the Miami skyline, the fast boats, etc.

Fantastic collection of clips. Don Johnson was true alpha at the beginning of the series, but somehow seemed to me his alphaness vanished from season to season. At the end he looked tired and overweight. He aged really fast in a short amount of time.

I think someone can see he was still the same guy. But when the show started he was 35 and when in the end he was 40, and using longer hair than when younger and badly shaven beard, which might make him look with more weight. Not sure if it had to do also with his character becoming more darker towards the end of the show.

I guess this shows that as we old, is better to get a clean haircut, and pay more attention to grooming and all details.

He sported a white beard for a time, but he looks too young to be getting the Santa Claus look.

True, seems he was able to stop degeneration of his body. Also proves, male age like wine, women age like milk. Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson were a really beautiful couple.
