Background

I’m Asian and I speak fluent french. The past year, I’ve been spending time and traveling in France extensively. I just spent 2 weeks in biarritz from June 1-14. Something to keep in mind: My trip in Biarritz is more of a scouting/surf trip rather than game focused. If gaming was my goal, I would’ve come here in July or August. I only went out on the weekends, and spent a decent amount of time surfing and working on my project.

Funny thing, Biarritz is the only place in France where people have asked me why I speak french and where I learned it. It could be because people are friendly.

About the city

For me personally, Biarritz is a perfectly sized city for summer vacation. It’s a very walkable city and it’s one of the best places in Europe for surfing. I’ve been told that tourists don’t come in in hordes until late June/early July and the peak season is around late July/August, and I think that’s when the big surfing event takes place.

Weather wasn’t great while I was there. 5 out of 14 days was either raining or kinda gloomy. It definitely gets better in July/August.

Being a surfing/resort town, Biarritz definitely has a different vibe than other big french cities like Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux or even Montpellier. You don’t see immigrants at all, which I appreciate. They really fucked up the scene sometimes.

Also, Biarritz is in the french part of pays basque, a beautiful region. I took day trips to Bayonne, St Jean du lez and San Sebastian. Skip Bayonne, ST is very similar to Biarritz and got a nice beach too, less touristy though.
San Sebastian is much bigger, very touristy, and the city itself is beautiful. I would recommend checking out ST and San Sebastian.

Where to stay

I stay in an airbnb 5 min walk from la grande plage, in a pretty residential area. It was great. If you open up google map, anywhere in brown is good since you can just walk everywhere.

What I saw

The first week was pretty dead, and it got better in the second week. I didn’t see that many tourists during the day or at night. They are mainly from the UK, Australia, Germany, Sweden. And towards the end of my stay, came a huge group of high schoolers from Dublin who are here to study French.

Since I spent quite some time in the mediatheque, I opened some chicks there. Almost all of the girls were high schoolers and they were studying for their exams. Same thing at the beach, a lot of young girls from Bayonne or Anglet moped down to biarritz during the day to chill at the beach. Honestly, I couldn’t crack those high schoolers. (Lemme know if you somehow know how to do it.)

Surfing

I am a beginner and I surfed at plage de la cote des basques. There are surfing school over there with affordable prices so I would recommend you check them out if you just start surfing. Plage de la cote des basques is where most people surf. On a sunny day, the beach will be packed starting 11am.

There are people surfing at Grande plage too but they are all pretty good. If you are tight, maybe try over there, and then pick up chick during your breaks because Grande plage is always packed with people tanning.

Biarritz is a great place for beginners to learn how to surf. If you are competitive and are looking for bigger waves, go to Hossegor.

Beach

For running beach game, go to grande plage. I would say it’s 40% couples, 30% old people and 30% people under 25 when I was there. I saw topless girls here and there, but don’t expect to see a lot of them.

Restaurants

I didn’t eat out that much.

Local people told me to check out les baigneuses and the restaurants on Rue Gambette.

Pepe Joe is a dope burger/pizza spot. They do delivery as well.

Bars

There are a lot of bars around les Halles. During the week I would go there since other places would be dead.

Bar de la Marine: I actually like this place a lot. Friday jam session, Saturday live band. Older crowd. The bar is small, so you can run some street game outside the bar.

Ventilo Cafe: Right next to Marine, similar vibe.

Bar de la Plage: Probably my fav spot. It turned into dance floor on weekends. Dope DJ. Beautiful girls.

Newquay: Irish pub. if all the other places are dead, this will be your best bet.

Clubs

There are 4: Carre Coast, Duplex, le caveau and playboy. I was in duplex on a saturday night and I thought it was pretty good. 12 euro cover with a drink ticket.

From talking to french people, I think Carre Coast is the best one. 15 euro cover with no drink ticket. It’s a little difficult to find that’s why I didn’t make it there. It’s on the same level as the casino.

I walked past playboy one night and the crowd looked really young.

Overall, I enjoyed Biarritz a lot. I would definitely come back, hopefully in July.

I’m going to Nice for the second half of June. Hit me up if you are around. It will be a totally different vibe. Let the tourist hunt begin.
