My apologies for not replying earlier (busy week)

I also apologize for not having correctly interpreted your post.
Your reasoning is solid and I will confess after all my lengthy rambles that I would smirk if I saw one of these beg-packers in my vicinity being punched by a rightfully angry citizen [Image: icon_lol.gif]

I was just in Iquitos in Peru. A guy has a gofundme page to raise money so he can get back to his home country in Sweden. I don't think he has to worry though. I've heard that in South America if you overstay your visa, you will eventually be arrested and then put on a plane the next day. This happened in Argentina to a guy I know.

Funny, I thought that the nordic countries like Sweden and Norway (maybe Denmark too?) would ship you back if you send the SOS to the embassy/consulate (they'd probably bill you/discount it frrom payments afterwards)

As far as I know, the consulate of any western country (at least European ones) will lend their citizens money to get back home. You just have to give it back after a few months of your return.

The idea is to help you out in case you get robbed/lose everything while abroad, but I guess this retards could also get help.

But it's just funnier to attention whore and beg for it.

They will first tell you to call family/friends and send money with WesternUnion. Only if you insist and make it believable that this is not possible they will hand out money themselves.

I was told that for Americans you can get a free ride home as well. When you arrive you must handover your passport until you're able to pay the gov't back.

This sounds unlikely to be true. Does anyone have firsthand knowledge?

Where I am, many locals think I can just go to the US embassy and ask for a loan should I need one. Absurd. When my passport got stolen, my embassy wouldn't even let me in to get a replacement without showing US ID, kind of a catch 22.

I can answer that question.

As an american citizen you have to call the consulate and explain that you are stuck and wish to return stateside.
You will be told that you need an affidavit signed by threee sponsors (friends or family usually) to pay for 1/2 of your ticket cost and the consulate will cover the other half once the papers have been procured.

That makes sense, it's always better to ask your relatives first. But it's nice to know the consulate can help you in case of real need.

From what I've heard, some countries are more generous than others. A French guy told me it happened to him (wallet/passport/return tickets where in a backpack that he lost) and the French embassy was really quick and helpful. They paid for plane and hotel, without asking for much info. Spain for example I'm sure they would give me many more problems.

If shit happens, it's nice to know you can count on your embassy.

But I have zero respect for morons who put themselves in this situation willingly.

You know you are running out of money, why the fuck don't you buy a return ticket while you can? I've done this whole backpacker "just go there without return ticket and we'll see what happens". Many times. But I always had plans B C and D to come back home.

Thailand is cracking down on shameless Western ‘beg-packers’

THAILAND is now cracking down on “beg-packers” — shameless Western backpackers begging for travel money on the streets of South-East Asia.
According to reports, visitors entering Thailand may be required to show immigration officials they have 20,000 baht ($748) in cash on them before being allowed entry into the country.

Thaivisa, an online forum for expats in Thailand, says it has learned of several instances where immigration officials at a number border checkpoints across Thailand have been asking people entering the country on a tourist visa to prove they have the funds.

Reports of this happening have also started to increasingly surface on social media in Thailand expat groups.

According to Thaivisa, people trying to enter with history of tourist visa entries appear to be the ones under the most amount of scrutiny but education visa holders are also the subject of similar scrutiny.

It is believed that the new requirements at border checkpoints around the country could be a response to the rise in beg-packers and foreigners who want to work in the country illegally.

This isn't quite the same, but here is someone who put a Gofundme page for a Burning Man ticket. She got it:

As long as there are suckers out there to give money to these freeloading losers this shit will only get worse. I saw a dirty dreadlocked hippie begging for money on Khao San Road my first (and only) time there.
"I don't have any money for you" I told him.
"C'mon man, I know you have money"
"I have money, what i said is I don't have any money FOR YOU"

How fucking shameless can someone be?

I seriously have a bone deep hatred of hippies that has grown stronger in the past year. I'm all about minimalism with self-sufficiency but these hippies are flat out parasites. No other way to put it.

I was in Penang Malaysia and saw some westerners doing some juggling street performance for the cars stopped at a red light. I see this all the time in Latin America but this was in Asia. I felt a pang of embarrassment as I know Asians, especially Chinese, don't have the patience for this type of shit. Here was a couple in their 20s fucking off and not working and just doing some bullshit juggling act in front of people that actually work for a living. You have money to travel across the ocean but can't afford to live once you arrive?

The visa situation in Thailand was pretty bad and I know it's because of cunts like these beg-packers. No more going across the border for a visa run and only 30 days. I seriously want to beat the shit out of every single dread-headed junkie tourist I see. And I know for a fact they are the same shitheads going around the world apologizing to the world for electing Trump and trying to tell everyone that they are "one of the good ones." God what I wouldn't give for 5 minutes in a room with a baseball bat with one of them.

Did I mention how much I hate hippies?

It's bad enough that travel has become cheap enough that every dad-boded western bitch finding herself in tribal pants looking like a female Homer Simpson and guys with noodle arms and a stringbeard and trackmarks is able to infect the globe with their presence, but outright begging in a foreign country is a disgrace.

We need to start a new crypto called hippie-coin where built into it is a smart contract that will payout whenever it detects in the news an American/Canadian traveling hippie gets their ass beat. The pay out of hippie-coin will be made to the wallet associated with a photo of beaten hippie taken by the hero. Who's in?

We should form a Bogota Gringo vigilante squad to patrol La Candelaria and beat the shit out of these beg packer dirt bags, similar to the paramilitary death squads that kill vagrants in the city. They give the rest of us bad names and take money from the genuinly needy so fuck them, the local cops won't give a shit. I think it would be a lot of fun.

I'm in once I go to Bogota. If anyone wants to form in Mexico City, PM me.
