Anyone have a run down of Monterrey, Mexico?

When I go back to the US for the holidays I might take a detour there with a friend of mine to visit some alumni/buddies.

The people we know there are natives, though, and a gringo perspective would be appreciated.

Factors:

-Cost of living
-Cost of partying
-Quality of Girls
-Chances of Hooking up
-Level of Spanish required
-Safety

-Cost of living: The most expensive city in Mexico excluding Cancun and Los Cabos. Depends on the zone, if your friends are "fresas" they live in San Pedro Garza(the wealthiest neighborhood in the country) so the cost of living is expensive by mexican standards.

-Cost of partying: Clubs push bottle service, Johnnie Walker Red Label runs around 150USD in a upper middle class club.

-Chances of Hooking up: It depends, with fresas upper class without social circe almost imposible, with the middle mestiza looking it's possible. With "foraneas"(girls from other states that study in MTY) much more possible.

-Level of Spanish required: Same as above, all the upper class has lived in Canada/USA at some points of their lives, you need basic spanish but less than in other parts of the country.

-Safety: MTY used to be the safest city in MX, is not anymore, I would NOT GO to a place surrounded by big SUVs with polarized windows or where are cowboy hats. I assume that your friends know where to go. MTY is a big city so there are dangerous parts and safe parts, there's no risk of being targeted, the risk is that at some places there are shootouts between different narcos(balaceras). Be smart.

Dug wars related violence is at the very top right now, also at night, also in areas around bars, clubs, etc. Don't take an unncesary risk, unless you want to die under a rain of AK-47 bullets.

Aside from this, you, gringos, have to understand this:

There is no bar scene in Mexico.
If you want to pick up a girl, you have to go to an "Antro" (a club).
Upper middle class White girls are called "Fresas" (strawberries), they are pretentious, snob and bitchy; most of the times they go out with their circle of friends. So, if you arrive to the club in a big car and take one of the front tables or a boot in the VIP zone, ask for a fine bottle, and master the neg playing, maybe, maybe, just maybe you will have a chance.
Lower class girls (Browns) are easier; they usually go out in pairs, so you’d need to go with a buddy for the other girl.
In some Mexican cities, there are places known as “Afters”. These are clubs which start at 3:00 am. Although they are supposed to open for those people who want to continue drinking after the bars are closed, people go there for two reasons: To get drugs or to pick up a girl. It takes you less than 30 minutes to get a girl in those places. However, most of these places have been closed, and unless you go with a Mexican, I would not recommend you to go there.
In places like Cancún, Acapulco, Playa del Carmen and Los Cabos, things are different because foreign girls, also American, are a majority, so they impose their rules. Even in those places is easier to pick up a ‘gringa’ than a Mexican girl.

When I was in Mexico, hot chicks were very much in their group, but I always found it easy to get accepted into various groups, ie you spend a minimal amount of time with anyone, guy or girl, and they introduce you to their friends and everyone's chill with you. Go anywhere, do anything, especially something that isn't touristy, and you meet people. They're often friendly and being asked out to party in a big group by guys or girls is super common, just a sign of being friendly.

Though the city I was in, Cuernavaca, was perhaps different than a big city like Monterrey.

In your experience, is it easy to make friends/break into social groups in Monterrey, do you see the same friendly attitude with people inviting you to go out after knowing you for almost no time at all? Under the assumption you're speaking good Spanish.

All cities are the same. Game in Mexico is basicaly inside your social group. And once again, Drug wars related violence is at its very top right now. It's on your own risk.

The last place I used to work, we had tons of foreigners. I love the look of Brazilians and Argis, and we had tons that stayed at our hotel. But consistantly the most beautiful girls that would walk through the door were suprisingly from Monterrey. That place must have some great women.

What part of "Don't you come to Mexico" you don't understand? Do you remeber Colombia in the mid 80s, well Mexico is like that right but in an upgraded version now. Cancún and Los Cabos don't belong to the list since they are Gringo towns.

After NAFTA, a TON of displaced campesinos (farmers) began to migrate to Mexico city, filling its ranks with short pudgy women at an alarming rate. Definitely some cuties in the city, but as a percentage, very low.

Check out Puebla for the piezas poblanas perfectas.

Damn, that's fucked up and unfortunate. But at the same time this is the way I look at crime in places like Mexico... Say the murder rate is 5x higher than the city you live in, which is probably being generous if you live in a big city. What do you think your chances of getting murdered are? Still probably not high high at all. For example, in Brazil, the murder rate is something like 25 people murdered for every 100,000 citizens.. Therefore your chances of dying in brazil are right around .00025%. I'm willing to be more people die from crossing the street in Brazil. My 25 years on this planet, I don't know one person who has been murdered. 5% of 0 is still zero. Your chances of being caught up in something sketchy may go up a little, but at the same time, weren't your chances pretty damn low in the first place? I worry more for my life when I'm riding my snowboard at times than when I'm walking through a seedy neighborhood (doesn't mean i'm not cautious), I know far more people who have died in skiing or snowboarding accidents than I do people who've died on the street.

Being Mexican, and respectfully disagreeing with you, I would say girls from Sinaloa are the hottest ones around (I know this from observation and many friends that live there). Shame Sinaloa has more of a reputation for being a drug state than a state of hotties.

I wouldn't say the whole of Mexico is like that. The colombian insurgency controlled almost half of Colombia. The drug cartels (which are not a political insurgency, they only care about making profit) control mostly the border towns... the farther south you go, their influence diminishes. Most deaths last year related to the drug trade occurred in the states of Sinaloa, Durango and Chihuahua, also known as the "golden triangle area".

Ok, the rundown:

Monterrey nightlife is dead right now. Drug violence has done that. Barrio Antiguo is dead, and all the clubs that are left are a couple low class regueton shitholes, and a few upper class, expensive fresa clubs where guys go to show off their money. Dont go into those clubs. In the lower ones, girls arent hot by any decent standard, and the ones who do will be after your money. And men will try to jump you just to show off. And in the upper clubs, your chances of a same night lay go down as girls go there to showcase their status (either by displaying their hotness, or by association, depending on the social standing of their company) So, it would be a social mistake to be seen leaving with an unknown, unpositioned man. Either way, expect to be fleeced by the bottle service, waiters, valet parking, cover charges...

Now, I wont tell you not to come to Mexico, or not to come to Monterrey. Unsafe? It all depends on who you are and what you do, and, of course, where you go. Stupid gringos who walk into shithole neighbourhoods trying to buy drugs and bang the locals get shot. Dont be a dead gringo.

If you can work the social game, your chances of getting laid are high. The plus-side of the nightlife going down in Monterrey is that, since, house parties are packed. You can have a "small meeting" that grows to the 100+ numbers.

Just stay away from the police. I repeat, stay away. Whenever you see red and blue, just walk in the other direction.

If you play the social game you are set. Just make a few socially-savvy friends, get invited to a few parties, be cool to everyone and reap the rewards. Case Facebook, Badoo, or CS for girls and parties. If you already know a few locals you are good to go.

-Cost of partying. Depends on your definition of partying. A night out on the town can go from a couple hundred pesos, to a couple of thousand. Reserve something for the taxi ride back home.
-Quality of girls. Id say 4 out of 10 are bangable, with 1 out of 20 being a 10. Your mileage may vary depending on where you set up camp, but you will definitely have a hard time not finding something you like.
-Chances of hooking up. Very High to For Certain, depending on your game. Some girls will try to hook up with you just on account of being gringo. (not the hottest girls)
-Level of spanish required. None. Everyone will try to speak in english with you. Some spanish is useful, specially if you will be going out on your own.
-Safety. Dont act like a stupid gringo and you are good to go.

Mexico City is great. There is no way you are not getting laid there. Whoever tells you there are no hot girls in Mexico City wasnt really pushing himself.

I forgot:

-Cost of living.

$500 dollars a month will allow you to survive. $1000 will let go get around with ease. $2000 will have you rolling in style.

Expect $200-400 for a shared apt in a decent area, or up to $750 for a single in the same area. Food is expensive, even if you dont eat out, but you can feed yourself decently with around $100 a week, with the ocassional starbucks and pizza delivery here and there. Im going on the paleo diet, and my food expenditure is never above $40 a week, but I cook all my meals.

Transport. Monterrey has the most expensive public transport in Mexico. Get a bus card (altough the savings are less than 15%) and learn the bus-metro routes. Use taxis as little as possible, and when you do make sure you get them from a depot ("sitio") For safety, do not hail cabs in the street, use a sitio or call them in.

If your friends have cars, ride with them, as there is no bus or metro after midnight. Politely ask if they want you to chip in for the gas. Most of them will say no, but will appreciate you asking anyways. (Dont be cheap if they accept, 50 pesos is less than what you would have paid for a taxi, anyways, and will get them on your side.)

Going out - Again, it depends on you. I can go out 4 times a week and not spend a cent, but I know my way around the city. $5-10 dollars can get you around if you have only a couple of beers, and $100-200 will get you far if you know when and where to spend your money.
