Huge numbers of prominent "Jews" only have one Jewish parent and even that parent might come from a mixed Jewish-Gentile marriage themselves.
I was married into a Jewish family for a bit. You cannot imagine how much time Jews spend congratulating themselves on being Jewish. It is the subtext of a lot of their conversation.
It can be subtle though, not explicit. No one in my Irish Catholic would have ever gotten away with that shit. They would have been mocked into submission.
At first I gave them shit about it but it was futile. They were completely pleased with themselves on all levels. Unshame-able.
They would drop things casually into conversation, like a twelve year old would mention to me, like it was just a haphazard topic of conversation, that he and his uncle were remarking, in passing of course, that most of the important philosophers were Jewish. Hmmm, interesting. Just something they happened to notice.
In response I said, "So, it was just a couple of Jewish guys sitting around agreeing that Jews are great."
Yep, he said proudly.
Another time, I had a relative asking me about Christianity, telling me he was thinking of converting, and after all our conversations, the only thing that seemed relevant to him was the fact Jesus was Jewish.
Well, my relative was Jewish too. You connect the dots.
The standard white male bashing has to take this tendency into account when you are talking about Jewish people doing it. It is all just a subliminal way of complimenting themselves.
Pointing out other people's failings is a way of saying without saying, look at me? See how I notice this stuff? Clearly none of these criticisms apply to me.
That Jewish identity is a strong thing, and even if only one parent is Jewish, they still take on the identity for all of the benefits that will be accrued thereby.
How can you pass up being chosen, Lena Dunham?
Such a deal.
