Kansas - what to visit?

Hey Gentlemen,

Soon going on a week long road trip to Kansas. Basically because of the Novelty factor - have never been there before and want to see Dodge City. Of course will check out the Boot Hill Museum - the Wild West replica as it is the only landmark I know. Also plan to follow the Santa Fe Trail.

Want to see with my own whether the State sucks as badly as people tend to say as no one out here ever goes there, but many people from Kansas come out West.

Will stop at Goodland and then Dodge and the rest (Wicihita, Topeka and Kansas City)are all optional will depend on whether I find any venues or prospects of quality.

Anyone ever been to Kansas? If so, any recommendations? Favorite bars, hot spots, landmarks, etc?

I was in Lawrence a few years ago and kicked it with some buddies on Mass Street. Lots of pub crawls and semi-congenial locals are there that you can kick it with. Nightlife is average. You might wanna hit the internet for names. Great college town and KU is massive.

Manhattan is where KSU is -- not much to see here, unless you like touring campuses and learning about insects/grasslands. I didn't spend much time here.

While you are there, please check out Oklahoma Joes, in Kansas City , world famous BBQ spot. Ended up catching a Royals game that summer too. Kansas natives are really a mixed bag, but there is kind of a provincial vibe in the state. People have a strong connection to their home, so if you wanna tap into those roots, it helps to be genuine about family and hearth and all that jazz. Talent is really great for the Midwest, lot of skinny blondes around. I didn't pull so take that for a grain of salt.

If you are just passing through, being an out-of-towner will really help your odds, especially if you are extroverted with game. Can't stress that enough.

I couldn't wait to leave to be honest. I can't stand to be around Midwesterners. Hope that helps.

Maine and Canadian lobsters are the same animal. Prove me wrong.

I wish, at least that would have made my stay much more interesting!

Midwesterners (Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Indiana, Ohio, etc.) come off as very plain and pigheaded about certain things and many of them share the same interests. Most grow up in their small towns/cities and die there unless they move to the "Big City". They typically have very limited worldviews and rely on the boob tube to teach them about life outside of their second rate ball teams, shitty classic rock bands, and subpar beer. I have done 3 separate stints up there for school and internships and I just have not managed to meet an evolved character from there. I'm not even talking red pill, but just not acting like a plain jackass.

Transplants that manage to move there from New England and California end up fitting in really well for some reason, but pick up some of the disgusting self-righteous behavior and act more obnoxiously than the locals. The south has incredible depth as far as culture and people are concerned and I'd prefer living here over a place like St. Louis or Bloomington.

Which places in the South have you been to? Why do you like it more, for some reason it seems to have an even worse rep than the MidWest among the spoiled City folk.

I've been to Birmingham, Starkville, Tupelo, Memphis, Atlanta, Tulsa, Stillwater and all over TX.

I felt more at home in these places. Despite its shaky reputation, you'll meet people from all walks of life that are well-adjusted and who are not transplants. I didn't really feel that hokey, self righteous "Good Ol Boy Christian" vibe in the Southern places that I've been; however, it was more pronounced in the Midwest. Easier to make friends, definitely easier to date/game (my worst demographic). I count my lucky stars every day that I don't live out in some of these places.

I hope that it does not feel like I'm thrashing Midwestern people. [Image: tongue.gif] Report back after your trip and let us know how it went.

If you get a chance checkout the Flint Hills. It's located in eastern Kansas. Great for a mini road trip. I lived in Kansas for two years. Weather was really crazy but, overall I liked it. People were friendly and cheaper cost of living compared to the east coast.

I've driven through Kansas at least a dozen times.

Kansas City is a highly underrated 2nd/3rd tier city. It's technically in Missouri with only some suburban sprawl into Kansas. Cheap cost of living and great barbecue.

There isn't much else to see in the state of Kansas. Not a lot going on in Wichita or Topeka. Driving through the Flint Hills is kind of cool though.

@Il
Thanks, Il, will get back to you.

@Schlep:

The Flintlock hills look beautiful with hiking aplenty. Thanks for bringing them to my attention. I thought all Kansas was as flat as the floor.

I wouldn't hang around much in Kansas City on the Kansas side. Despite it being Kansas, it is the number 10 most dangerous city in America. If you decide to visit stay to the west near the Kansas Speedway. I was born and raised here, and over the last 5 years despite heavy development in the west..the city has went to shit.

Dodge city and Garden city are both now little mexicos, so you're not getting much of a 'Kansas' experience there.

Other than manhattan, Lawrence, and the flint hills, there's not shit here. Wichita has also been flooded with tons of foreigners.
