^^ Since you'll need Uber or Lyft to really neighborhood hop anyways, you might want to check two areas that would be good logistically for a night out or commute to work (whether it's Las Colinas or Plano).
1) Medical District - This place is gentrifying big time & has a bunch of good looking chicks that are affiliated with Parkland Hospital, Baylor Dental, UT Southwestern, or Scottish Rite. Rents for a one bedroom are much less than say Uptown.
2) Eastern Edge of Dallas North Tollway around Maple, Cedar Springs, Wycliff, or Mockingbird. There are some discounted gated apartment complexes around the area that tend to be lower than Uptown or Knox regions.
I'd google them all. Staying in Uptown can be nice, but to get the most of Dallas...you'll need to Uber out to different venues testing different scenes.
Staying in Uptown and only gaming in Uptown is like calling the same play over and over and over again in EA Sports Madden Football (which ain't gonna work).
@Cattle Rustler - Truckyard and HG Supply used to be cool. Now, they're getting college cliquish as well. Those places also close at midnight; due to their large outdoorsy patios, they have to close at 12AM because it's technically situated in "residentially zoned" neighborhood adhering to noise ordinance regulations, which hasn't been altered yet like the other mixed use developments.
I will say Truckyard has good food & is worth visiting at daytime.
