South Pacific Island suggestions? (Semi off the grid)

South Pacific Island suggestions? (Semi off the grid)

Due to my growing disdain for authoritarian government, I have been researching the South Pacific Islands with an intention to move in the near future, as my profession allows me to work very remotely. I have several islands in mind but would like some suggestions if anyone here can offer his expertise. Here are some preferred criteria:

-Small to medium population
-Easy access to uninhabited islands or areas
-Small government
-"No harm, no foul" police force
-Minimal ties to U.S.
-Minimal tourism
-Not *too much* of a "tribal culture" (asking locals for permission to enter water, etc.)
-Liberal immigration or residency laws (becoming full citizen in the future)
-Access to Internet if imperative

Any suggestions are much appreciated. Additionally, please let me know if this is a pipe dream that I should give up on now without wasting anymore time, as I have minimal experience with the South Pacific.

I am going to say Fiji because two of the sexiest and coolest girls I have banged were from Fiji. One was brown, the other Asian. God damn.....

I wouldn't say it's a pipe dream exactly, but you are trading one set of issues for another set, while not entirely getting rid of the old ones anyway. If efficiency or transparency in government is part of what you're looking for then the islands of the South Pacific is not what you're looking for. You very often get arbitrary and kangaroo court type application of laws in places like Fiji.

There may be fewer (apparent) overbearing laws or mindset, but you trade that for the whims of the local authorities, and it can be difficult to get things done, or challenge things legally and prevail like one can do in the U.S./CAN.

There are definitely positives, but there are plenty of frustrations and downsides in those places. Combined with the isolation and limited availability of things, it put off of staying long term in Fiji.

As Laner mentioned though, the girls can be damn good.

For me, I'd only do it if I lived on my boat and left for other places every couple months.

A few years ago I would have said Chile is an ideal choice for someone seeking the things you mentioned, but now that the socialist government is back things have changed quickly for the worse, and freedoms that seemed promising are being squashed more and more.

Americans are dreamers too
