safety in colombia

i usually find myself safe in bogota or traveling to medellin but it seems like almost every gringo i run into has had something happen to them in terms of theft or something like that. i haven't had anything happen to me in 4 months here but am just wondering what options there are for self-protection. i would never carry a gun or a knife, especially since i was recently frisked in zona t out of the blue. are there any options down here ? can you find mace or something, anything that would not get me in trouble if i were frisked again?

Come on dude. There is thousands of threads on Colombia and the mention of safety and what you need to do.

Colombia is no different than any other CA or SA country.

Use common sense.

Dont go to problem areas.

Dont wear flashy bling.

Try not to take alot of buses at night.

Dont piss people off.

Dont get completely wasted and walk home drunk at night.

Follow these rules and you should be ok.

Doesnt mean you cant/wont get mugged out in the main area of town because it does happen. But it is rare.

thanks for the condescending response to a question i didn't ask but i know all these rules and follow them and know that there are plenty of threads on safety in colombia, but i have not seen any mention of something that you could carry for extra protection, thus the reason for a new thread. to your list, id also add not taking cabs in the street (another rash of atm robberies by cab drivers recently).

'don't piss people off' is really just fantastic, incredibly original, thought-provoking advice that i just never thought of.....many thanks. if you got anymore tips along these lines or maybe something like 'don't walk around shit-faced in the south of bogota with six 50,000 pesos bills hanging out of your pockets, giving people the finger' i'd really welcome them. you're saving lives here brah.......can't thank you enough.

does anybody know of people down here carrying pepper spray or something? anything else? and if so, any dudes, it's obviously a chick thing in the states. i've talked to too many people who follow all those rules and have still gotten rolled. this is why i'm asking and have a different thread.

First of all I don't think Dash's comments were condescending, I thought they were common sense advice. If you're going to berate and sarcastically thank a member for advice that he took a few moments to respond to your post with then you could at least use correct grammar and punctuation. Your original post did not go into great detail so how can one expect to possibly know what advice to provide other than basic?

Secondly, if you have been there for 4 months I am sure you have learned a trick a or two. I never encountered any problems whilst staying in the north of Bogota, it was like being in a Western country in many cases. In terms of area safety, nightlife, malls, places to eat and malls. I would just advise to keep your wits about you at all times and avoid ATM's in the evening.

I am surprised you were frisked in the Zona T - this is something I never saw and it is generally an area frequented by the middle-upper tier of people in Bogota. Are you dressing or acting in a way that draws attention?

Roosh's advise in Bang Colombia to get cabs with old cab drivers, which was originally more a principle to not get taken for the scenic tour of a city in Colombia - is very sound advice and one I used in Colombia and never had a problem. Avoid talking English in taxis..I went in one with my American friend we switched to English then he tried to take me on a scenic route and I let rip on him in my finest Basque Country Spanish and let him know I was no chump.

Finally, lose the attitude.

Rinestone: you may want to have a chat with recently banned member Gringo about getting mad at people for not giving you free advice that you think you're entitled to.

Also, are the shift keys on your keyboard broken? Members here are replying to you threads using capital letters so that it's easier to read. Respect them by doing the same.

You asked a pretty dumb question by all accounts.

Your lucky I even took the time to reply with something, bc as you can see most ppl hit the back button after reading the post.

But yea get some pepper spray and pull it out then get shot lol Or what ever else you think will save you from an attacker.

Buena Suerte none the less....

If i misinterpreted, I apologize to Dash and anyone else for my tone, as well as for no capitals, it truly never occurred to me that it was a big deal. i thought 'come one dude' followed by talking about general safety was a shot. If not, completely my bad, I apologize.

My general, more constructive point is that I'm not talking about general safety I'm talking about carrying something, otherwise I wouldn't have started a new thread. I still don't have an answer, but maybe people are talking about rule and common sense because there isn't one. No worries.

It was the first time for me being frisked in Zona T and the same for the people I was with, but the guy who did it said it was common and routine. I've never seen it other then that time either. No English in a cab is good advice, I've also tried hopping on my cell and clearly telling someone the number of the cab, even if it's not a real phone call- just to let the driver know that someone else knows your whereabouts and which cab you're in.

Guys, I'm sorry...YOU ARE ALL WRONG!!! (shift keys on purpose).

COLOMBIA IS DANGEROUS!!!

Rinestone, you have got to be crazy going to Colombia - you do know you are exposing yourself to muggings, beatings, kidnapping, and that new drug called "kiss of death" aka Escopolamina.

If you go - be sure to walk around strapped - I recomend the HK .40 USP Compact!!

My advice: Go to Brazil - stay away from Colombia

DISCLAIMER: Just because I fuck countless women (I'm talking about 10 unique girls a week) in Colombia does not mean you should go to Colombia - more women for me! [Image: smile.gif]
