In my state it is illegal to dig up anything, even in my own backyard.

How is the resale value of a metal detector? If I bought one and then got bored of it how much could I resell it for?

If you hook up with a japanese importer you can get pretty dang good money for specific ones. I think shitake or some sort that would grow wild out in the forest here would go for about $300 per bucket. A guy I knew would do that, and he would explain how his honey spot kept moving down the valley each year.

What about legality? Any ref I have found is very vague. I don't mind breaking some laws/regulations but what are the actual consequences? I can't find anything other than exaggerated stories on the Internet.

I think metal detector game at the beach could work. Maybe have a piece of pirate treasure with you for a good DHV adventure story and invite them for a hunt. Apparently all women love to "hike"- take them to a geocache. Better than a PokeStop

Yeah, there's nothing that turns on women like a guy with a metal detector slinking around a beach looking for droppings I think you'd have better luck making money metal detecting than slaying tail.

And to answer your questions about going to the beach to use my detector. No, I always enjoyed being in the country and enjoying the piece and quite. Being surrounded by fat American women in bathing suits just puts me in a bad mood.

I haven't been to Fort Ti, But I've passed through the area and spent some time up in Essex on the St. Lawrence.

I think it is the digging that can get people in hot water. After thinking about it some more I guess nobody besides the DNR/Rangers would really have any idea anyway. There is a lot of paranoia online about this so that is why I asked.

Some of my hunting takes place up in the mountains on state game lands. Don't have to ask permission.

Alot of the times I'm hunting on farmers properties. So, I always ask for permission first. Usually they will tell me I can hunt anytime I want to as long as I'm not disturbing their crops.

Tip:
When talking with farmers. Ask them if when they are plowing their fields if they ever notice anything strange in different parts of the fields.

Example:
Foundation stones, broken glass, or metal objects.

On one occasion the farmer told me he almost always notices pieces of green glass in a certain area of one of his fields. I instantly knew what it was. As I had seen lots of pieces of green glass in other areas I had hunted.

Back in those days (1760-1790) Rum came in green bottles.

This thread reminded me of some of my childhood days when my friends and I would scour for Indian arrowheads. Now that I live in the southwest, and after reading this thread, that interest reemerged.

After doing some research, though, it seems that with arrowheads/Indian artifacts in particular, removing them from ANY public lands is illegal. So, let's say you're in a national forest, 10 miles off trail in the middle of nowhere. You see an arrowhead lying on the surface, you pick it up, and you're just unlucky enough to have a BLM officer approach as you're grabbing it. For a first offense, you're probably just looking at a fine. If he's cool, you just hand it over and get a warning.

Removing Indian artifacts from private lands is legal so long as you don't disturb burial grounds. So, if you want to play it safe, I'd stick to private land. I'm sure Schlep has more knowledge about the laws than I do, and I'm not sure if there are different laws pertaining to items such as coins, belt buckles, bottles, etc.

I travel between Arizona, California and Nevada and am often close to the border. From what I've read, there's a lot of cool stuff to be found in various ghost towns. The laws can be tricky, though, and some places outlaw metal detectors (based on what I've read).

How hard do you find it to search old homesteads? Is there a way to detect around all the garbage and nails with certain detectors? Or do you many stay outside of the home/foundation? It seems to me like the amount of nails would almost make it impossible to be inside the home or foundation.

Great question. Yes, that was one of my mistakes early on. I would drive past an old park or old homestead and think how great it would be to hunt in those places. But, your spending all day finding foil, nails and bottle caps etc. Don't get me wrong I have found some nice coins and relics but, it was not worth the hundreds of hours I wasted. If your going to do that. You need to learn how to find and read old maps.

Example: Find a map of your area, say 1880. Now find another map of your area say 1950. Locate the houses that were present in 1880 but not present in 1950. Now, try to locate those old foundations. This way your not digging up modern junk. Its not as hard as you think.

To answer your question about a certain type of detector. The answer is no.

Schlep what do you think about doing this in other countries (following their laws of course)? I would assume not many Mexicans or Bahamians have used metal detectors as a hobby, nor are there many detectors to buy. The Caribbean might seem like a good place considering all the treasures and colonial ships.

With oil so cheap right now, renting a drilling rig right might be a good idea in order to dig through Okie soil. *sarcasm*

Yeah, I think it would be a great idea. I even read somewhere you can go on a metal detecting vacation. Forget what country it was in though. Kinda like a hunting trip. You land in the country. A guide meets up with you and takes you out metal detecting. Maybe it was England.

I heard about a few serious hunters who would rent a house in Florida together. When a hurricane hits, only locals are allowed back in immediately after. Of course, the best time to hunt on the beach is when giant waves have churned everything up. Renting the house allowed these guys first dibs on the fresh virgin sand.
