Seriously? Math is scary? The idiocracy is here.

Economist Removed from Plane for Algebra

Guido Menzio an economist at the University of Pennsylvania–author of Block Recursive Equilibria for Stochastic Models of Search on the Job among other papers–was pulled from a plane because…algebra is suspicious. From FB:

Unbelievable…

Flight from Philly to Syracuse goes out on the tarmac, ready to take off. The passenger sitting next to me calls the stewardess, passes her a note. The stewardess comes back asks her if she is comfortable taking off, or she is too sick. We wait more. We go back to the gate. The passenger exits. We wait more. The pilot comes to me and asks me out of the plane. There I am met by some FBI looking man-in-black. They ask me about my neighbor. I tell them I noticed nothing strange. They tell me she thought I was a terrorist because I was writing strange things on a pad of paper. I laugh. I bring them back to the plane. I showed them my math.

It’s a bit funny. It’s a bit worrisome. The lady just looked at me, looked at my writing of mysterious formulae, and concluded I was up to no good. Because of that an entire flight was delayed by 1.5 hours.

Trump’s America is already here. It’s not yet in power though. Personally, I will fight back.

Algebra, of course, does have Arabic origins plus math is used to make bombs.

Addendum: here is the Washington Post on the story.

I think this is thread worthy.

I agree with Sam, something sounds fishy.

This could've even been posted in that clock-boy thread, same whiny shit going on.

Bet he was muttering alohasnackbar just to force freak his seated neighbor and get some of that victim olympics prize money.

edit; I don't see this needing a whole thread for speculative commentary, just a post in the lounge to note it's existence and move on, or the clockboy thread to tack on to the count of false-narrative funding, or maybe a compilation thread for all events of this kind.

Haha, the Formum Lounge is second largest thread on the forum, you'll be scanning for days. He didn't feel this was thread-worthy and should've been posted in the Lounge.

But this story sounds very plausible. The guy is clearly Italian(name and appearance), no way he's an Muslim trying to drum-up sympathy.

^ Carrying weapons of Math instruction.

Reminds me of a few years back, returning to Canada with a friend after we had traveled SEA together. He had written out a bunch of pages of modal logic / mathy looking stuff while we were on the plane. After we landed, he declared that he had some beef jerky so customs pulled him in and started questioning him about all sorts of shit. They even tried to take apart his Kindle to search for cocaine. He said, "I just came from Singapore, how the hell would I have cocaine." They saw his math notes and flipped out at it. "What is this?!" "It's ... Math..."

Was a weird experience. He was stuck in there for almost three hours.

Edit: Forgot to say, he's white and looks more like someone you'd see on a hockey rink and nothing like a terrorist. Another time, border / customs security questioned this tiny little Korean girl I was meeting for like two hours. Sometimes I don't know what my country is up to. My friends just have bad luck with this I guess, ha.

This story, as it's presented, sounds affected and dumb.

So, woman sees formulas on notepad, is suspicious, informs flight staff, FBI look into it, see it is just math, and nothing happens.

Based on the linked story, it isn't extremely clear if the guy was even permanently removed from the plane.

Regardless, the truth of this story is not that math is scary and it led to a guy getting removed from a plane—it's that a woman saw indecipherable writing, got scared, and reported it to the authorities, who in turn saw that it was just math and subsequently treated the guy with complete respect the whole time.

The whole "math scares people so they kicked a guy off a plane" slant sounds like something a Big Bang Theory fan would dream up to justify blaming all those "right-wing Christian nutjobs" for ruining the country with their "fear of science and math."

I recall a local news story when I was a kid about some dumb broad had called the cops on a guy for "a dead body on the back of his car" which turned out to be a cardboard cutout of a football player.

It's the same instinct that causes women to furiously declare that they'll call the cops on anyone who leaves a dog in the car, even if it's a cool day or the windows are open. By doing so they both get a dose of drama and an opportunity to engage in self-righteous attention whoring.

My read

- she tried to get his attention
- he rebuffed her, so something must be off.

Amirite sisters?

- she got pissed and used the apparatus of power to get back at him.

The system is primed to jump on these situations, like a black man driving through the suburbs. Race is justa background element, and in this society...

The fact that she was so wrong about everything is what sells the story.

But to me, this reminds me of grade school, when girls would get boys in trouble by tattling. There would be nothing wrong, but bringing someone under scrutiny of the state (teachers are public employees) sets a pattern.

In general, women always have someone else do their dirty work. She just sets things in motion.

Rape cases and sexual harassment are the ones red pill guys focus on.

Players see this behavior all the time in all spheres

Women manipulate others all the time.

The damage to this man, and all of the other passengers who had to sit on the tarmac can't be undone by an apology....And be damn sure a sincere apology would never come because she (and the system) believes that she did the right thing.

On Thursday evening, a 40-year-old man — with dark, curly hair, olive skin and an exotic foreign accent — boarded a plane. It was a regional jet making a short, uneventful hop from Philadelphia to nearby Syracuse.

Or so dozens of unsuspecting passengers thought.

The curly-haired man tried to keep to himself, intently if inscrutably scribbling on a notepad he’d brought aboard. His seatmate, a blond-haired, 30-something woman sporting flip-flops and a red tote bag, looked him over. He was wearing navy Diesel jeans and a red Lacoste sweater – a look he would later describe as “simple elegance” – but something about him didn’t seem right to her.

She decided to try out some small talk.

Is Syracuse home? She asked.

No, he replied curtly.

He similarly deflected further questions. He appeared laser-focused — perhaps too laser-focused — on the task at hand, those strange scribblings.

Rebuffed, the woman began reading her book. Or pretending to read, anyway.
Shortly after boarding had finished, she flagged down a flight attendant and handed that crew-member a note of her own.

Yes, because when I believe that an Al-Queda agent is next to me, the first thing I want to do is make small talk with him. [Image: dodgy.gif]

Funny enough, if you try reading the article with the genders switched, there would be no confusion as to what was happening. Imagine if your guy friend told you a story, "Yeah, I sat next to this chick on an airplane, and when I tried to talk with her, she was really curt and focused on her book." The rejection would be obvious to everyone involved. But because its a chick being rejected, the press can't state the obvious.

So an obnoxious, wall-bound lady tried to spit some shitty game at a dude, he didn't care, and she inconvenienced everyone on the plane because her feelings were hurt.

I hope she enjoys her cats. [Image: catlady.gif]

And because women live so completely in the moment of their feelings, they can't see how terribly this behavior damages the cohesiveness of society.

It is almost impossible to fight because it happens incrementally, and women never get punished, so they continue the behavior, and it allows their enablers to feel righteous over and over again with no skin in the game.

And the collateral damage spreads out, from the man affected, who now thinks all women are cunts and loses faith in half of humanity and then treats other women with suspicion.

And all the people on the plane, seeing that something important to them, getting where they are going on time, can be completely trashed on a whim by a dork with a beef, become less willing to listen when the women in their lives go off on someone.

And we haven't even gotten to the airplane staff, or in other situations, the police and 911 operators who start to lose the will the help when their time gets wasted over and over.

In a way, this is just to sort of problem that the human mind is designed not to solve, because there is no big event that lets us know that we are messing up and need to change. Instead it is that little by little erosion of our trust in women in particular, and people in general.

The only real way to solve it would be to hold women accountable to everything, and punish them at least in some way when they allow their momentary petty concerns inconvenience and even harm the people around them. It would entail listening to women, and doing a little digging all the time to see if what they say is accurate, and then calling them out on it.

It would be a huge task. You would have to become as nitpicking as they are, except with truth, not obfuscation, as your goal, and everyone would have to be on the same page, the page of not letting them get away with this nonsense, even the little stuff.

It is too spread out, too nebulous, too tempting just to let things go and get on with life. Don't think it is going to be fixed the way we are going.

“The greatest burden a child must bear is the unlived life of its parents.”

I looked into this a little bit more and it's pretty clear what happened here. This guy is an Italian with olive skin, swarthy build, and curly hair. The ignorant asshole sitting next to him (the woman) tried to chat him up and noticed he had a foreign accent.

He rebuffed her attempts at conversation. Like any focused, mission-oriented man, his attention was absorbed in his work. He didn't have time or the inclination to talk to a (likely) rude American frump.

Remember, this was an Italian guy. If she had been attractive, he would likely have found a way to make time.

So she gets her pride hurt by this guy, who couldn't be bothered talking to her. And she can see him scribbling things that she can't understand in his notebook.

Remember that many ignorant people women have a strong suspicion against men who do intellectual activities, as they see it as a sign of too much independence. Also, it reminds them of how inadequate they are. Women are no exception; they may even be worse than men in this regard.

So it's clear what was going on in her mind: rejection, anger, suspicion, and vindictiveness. Classic female toxicity.

The whole story is here:
