@PhDre: Nobody will argue with yourself over the tangibleness of RE vs equities. But like everything else, it is relative. If you don't think RE can be taken from you in a heartbeat, try going to some of the less developed regions in the world. Hell, even some of the developed economics will seize land for some obscure reason.
@iknowexactly: I feel for you bro, you tried the hardest game in town.

Also look at utility companies. Those usually pay decent dividends and have low betas.

Thanks for all the advice.
I have sold my euro government bonds (made an ok profit on them).
I want to purchase the following:
1) gold, both SPDR gold shares which tracks the gold price and mutual funds that invest in gold (and other precious metal) mining and processing companies.
Mainly because I have read that most large hedge funds and investment banks have a strong bearish outlook and are mainly taking short positions and positions in gold. (and I think it's not a good idea to take a short position with my lack of knowledge and experience);
2) shares in mutual funds that invest in large, stable, dividend paying companies such as VDAIX.
3) REITS for my own country (where I have a decent view of the real estate market).
Am I making any large mistakes with this approach?
