Do you bring a stainless steel water canteen to the gym or a plastic bottle?

I've been debating whether I should spend $10-$20 on a stainless steel canteen when I can just refill a glass bottle or a plastic water bottle at the gym. Is there any kind of benefit to a stainless one?

Yes, it won't rust.

I have a bunch of Klean Kanteen bottles, and I like them a lot. I have several 40oz bottles, a couple 27oz bottles and a 12oz.

Benefits? Well, I can put booze in the 12 ounce one and bring it to class and people think I'm just drinking water, not whiskey to get through the stupid fucking questions people ask.

I like them for hiking. They're very durable and they seal well (the caps have o-rings); they dent rather than break from pretty significant drops. I've had plastic nalgene-type bottles shatter when I dropped them, and glass is obviously even worse. I usually bring the steel bottles to the gym too.

I don't know how much there really is to the concern about chemicals leeching into water from plastic bottles, but at home I drink filtered water out of mason jars because I have tons of them. Stainless, like glass, is about as food-safe as it gets.

^^ Glad I got my gallon jug phase out of my system when I was 16.

I use my shaker bottle now.

I've always wondered why so many people don't bring water bottles to the gym. People stop and take little sips from the fountain instead. Meanwhile i'm gulping down 2-3 shakers full.

Avoid drinking from plastic bottles whenever you can. Plastic releases estrogen-like chemicals into your body:

Most plastic products, from sippy cups to food wraps, can release chemicals that act like the sex hormone estrogen, according to a study in Environmental Health Perspectives.

The study found these chemicals even in products that didn't contain BPA, a compound in certain plastics that's been widely criticized because it mimics estrogen.

I use stainless steel or ceramic for everything.
If anybody is on the fence about this, it's a no-brainer. Plastic leeches estrogenic chemicals. That is all.

Yeah the whole jug think is hilarious and annoying.

I bring a standard plastic bottle of 16oz water, add BCAA's and Pre-Workout.

I know plastic is bad (I use Ziploc plastic tupper wear for meal prep)

Thing is, I don't want to use my germ infest hands to constantly open a bottle, that I'll constantly reuse.

I'd rather have something I can open and close easy with my mouth (no homo).

I had a really awesome glass camelback bottle that I really liked. Ended up dropping the damn thing and it shattering.

I have a backup stainless steel one that I'm using now instead [Image: sad.gif]

As a general rule, you only want to drink out of ceramic, glass, or stainless steel.

Plastic, even the BPA free stuff, leeches chemicals into the water that mess with your testosterone levels. It's not a huge amount, but given the amount of environmental toxins that go into your body each day, you want to minimize what you can.

I'm drinking out of a 1.5L jug right now. That is real talk. I don't mind the man boobs.... I think this is a very minor thing but I'm glad there are good threads like this on RVF. I just draw the line at no hot water in plastic bottles. I think the only thing you should be worried about when it comes to water is... are you drinking enough?

Is the water from my fridge ok? How about carbonated, unflavored water?

If I have to buy bottled water anyway (don't live in a country anymore where I want to drink the tap water) does it really make much of a difference if I drink it from glass or metal if it's coming from plastic bottle?

Good question. The study shows that plastic releases toxic compounds into the water itself, but it still leaves open the issue of whether physical contact between your mouth and plastic will have the same effect.

Use a gallon water jug. I drink so much water there's really no other way. Plus it has a handle unlike water bottles can't beat that!

Can't beat glass for drinking out of in my book. I'd take a glass bottle in and see if anyone complains about health and safety.

At the gym I just use the water fountain. But on the go, I'm pretty OCD about water bottles. I've used almost every type of bottle with a variety of mouthpieces. My favorite are the Aladdin water bottles.

They are essentially a larger, reusable version of disposable water bottles. I hate all the straws, flipping lids, and various contraptions on most brand name water bottles on the market. These have a normal cap, as well as the ability to add ice using the lower threading.

They are also extremely durable for their low price point. You can usually find them at Walmart, otherwise they are all over the internet.

Given that plastics have been linked to endocrine disorders, I know only take a stainless steel water bottle everywhere.

I use a new 1.5l bottle of mineral water every time I train. I keep a load of them in my car boot.

Life's too short to be fucking around with a specific water bottle, whatever it's made of.
